CleanMyMac is overall great software. If you don't blindly just let it run on its own, you will get good results. My Safari cache grows to an enormous size every week, and I'm constantly installing and deleting all the freebies at the Mac App Store, so I pretty much use it all the time.

But I would recommend a Time Machine. Because it can and will cause problems from time to time, especially if you're not paying attention to what you're doing. ALWAYS look through the options on each section of the cleanup outline, it will keep you from making the same mistakes over and over.

Also know your apps. Some apps, especially licensed ones, DO NOT like you making changes to them, especially removing their PowerPC parts and/or deleting languages. They won't work afterwards and will throw up a message until you re-download and install it again.

In version 2, they are using new methods to handle cleanup within your Home folder, and it will bite you HARD if you don't pay any attention as it will delete files that are over a week old. It tried to delete all 50GB of my Movies folder. If I wasn't paying attention to just how much it was about to remove, I would have had to re-rip hundreds of hours of work again.

And this is why I rate it two stars. It shouldn't even be messing with your Documents, Movies, or Music section.

Is it worth $40 though? Sure, I've been using it for years, and it's saved me lots of space, lots of time, and lots of headaches. I use iPad apps that cost more.

When the way it handles our personal files gets better, it'll be a 5+ star app again.
