I would like to point out to the (potential) users of the Dragon Dictate software and to those who have made comments there on that the rating of one star isn’t a fair one. I agree to the fact that the company doesn’t have a client friendly sales policy. As a matter of fact, they don’t care a snap. And why should they? This company has bought through the years each and every startup that developed speech technology (also Macspeech Dictate) and has turned into the sole company in the world that delivers speech recognition for mac and windows and other voice recognition solutions. There is no competition. And there won’t be any; it’s light years away. Siri is just another name for Dragon Dictate on the iphone 4S or 5 and if you start using the service Dictation on ML, you end up with Nuance.
As translator, I am a longtime user of speech technology. I even tried ViaVoice (IBM) on Windows in the 90’s and iListen on mac later on, before using Macspeech dictate.
Nuance has always been more focused on Windows and from the 9.5 version on, it was getting better and better.
The same is happening now on mac. There is a huge difference between Dragon Dictate 2.5 and Dragon Dictate 3. You won’t see it, because the interface has remained the same, there are no rings and bells. It’s inside. The accuracy is tremendous and the stability too. Before, with Dragon dictate 2.5, you had to first open Acrobat or Word before launching Dragon, otherwise Dragon Dictate could hang. And you could use neither Textexpander nor Typinator, otherwise you had issues such as letter inversions (inversinso). Only Typit4me worked with it. This is not the case anymore.
And there is good news too for those who use Parallels or VMware. With Dragon Dictate you can easily dictate into the applications of Windows7/8 and Linux Mint.
So I should say a rating of 3,5 stars would be more appropriate.
