Fast, smooth, expandable – but still no proper bookmark management.

Come on, Opera. It's almost a year now. How difficult can it be to reimplement this?

Still lacks fundamental features such as bookmarks or an integrated update functionality.

Slow, cumbersome and unreliable – but without feasible alternative if you want to sync an Android device.

I use SyncMate to sync my Mac with my Nexus 7 Android tablet (or better: "used", since the tablet is broken now). My experiences are unfortunately rather mixed.

First of all: SyncMate requires a companion app running on the Android device. That's not a problem per se, but in my experience, that app is rather crash prone, slow to react (it takes sometimes a couple of minutes until it realises it is connected to my Mac) and sometimes doesn't recognise wifi connections at all. (USB connection are more reliable.)

Bookmarks, contacts and calendars do sync quickly and usually without many problems, but also not too reliably. More often than not, it takes at least two syncs until all data are actually transferred.

Photo syncing doesn't work at all for me, since I use Aperture on my Mac – which SyncMate does not support at all (only iPhoto).

Movie syncing is pretty much a disaster. Offering the option to transcode movies to a more suitable format for the tablet is a fine idea, but unfortunately this conversion takes ages and is done significantly faster with dedicated programs. But even without conversion, transferring movies is painfully slow. For a single 1 GB movie file that can easily copied over to the tablet with for instance the Android File Transfer app within 30 seconds or so, SyncMate takes 30 minutes or more.

Syncing other files is possible (by syncing folders), but somewhat cumbersome to set up. On the plus side, the transfer seems to work relatively fast and without too many problems.

Mounting the Android tablet as a volume on the Mac does not seem to work at all (although offered as an option).

If there were an actual alternative to SyncMate to sync an Android device with a Mac, I would strongly recommend this alternative. But there's none, so SyncMate is more or less the only solution right now.

Meh. Skype 6 brings a few improvements, but overall, it's still missing a lot that I liked about the ancient Skype 2.8: to get conversations in separate windows is cumbersome (there's apparently no automatic option for this – you always have to double-click them), you still get the bloated main window by default, and the option to simply switch between different accounts is still missing.

Back to 2.8… again.

This is what Steam for Mac should have been like.

What the hell? Is PSE getting yearly installments now?

To answer my own question: yes, it is... almost to the day exactly one year between PSE 11 and PSE 12.

I do like Opera, generally, but I can't really recommend Opera 12 in the state it is now. It is fast, yes (it feels even faster than Safari 6), but full of bugs. Bookmarks cannot be re-ordered, webpages suddenly stop working (no longer reacting to clicks), tabs with Flash content might appear empty from time to time, and the current version is a huge resource hog. I for my part am returning to Opera 11.6x for the time being.

Hold down control, use the scroll wheel of your mouse (or two finger swipe up and down on your trackpad) – voilà. ;)
