To add to my comments below.

This is the textbook way to alienate you customer user base. As soon as anyone launches an alternative I'll jump ship, and I'm sure I won't be the only one.

I've used Macs since 85, and I've seen many software companies adopt this gouge-the-customer-and-screw-the-consequences approach. The only one that's still in business 27 years later is Microsoft.

Unless Nuance change their marketing strategy they *will* fail.

I doubt Nuance give a toss about comments on forums, but if they're listening here's a marketing lesson in three easy points:
a) Bring in a fair upgrade price for v.3 (< £25/$30)
b) Make PC and Mac pricing identical
c) Stop treating the people who pay their wages (i.e. you & me) like twats

BTW I've had no response to my letter to Nuance. Quelle Surprise.

JIMW "Unfortunately they will not fail, especially in the short term, and at least till some viable competition comes along that refuses to sell out to them"

Agree completely. Eventually, because of their brain dead marketing Nuance will begin to lose sales and profitability and will be bought out by someone smart enough to realise customers aren't idiots – or overtaken by someone with a better product and a better attitude.

It may take month or even years, but whoever is responsible for making the decisions we are all complaining about now will be flipping burgers in five years' time.

My letter to Nuance:

NEW Dragon Dictate for Mac 3

This makes me angry.

When a major software company releases a product, they make it clear how long that product will last – i.e. well before the launch of Mountain Lion you should have announced that Dragon Dictate would only be compatible as far as OS X Lion. (Please do not say that you did not know – Apple developers like yourself would have known about the incompatibility from the first seed). This would have given users the ability to decide whether to upgrade to Mountain Lion (I would have upgraded all our Macs to ML bar one, which I would have used for Dragon Dictate). This is standard industry process.

Instead you wait until after the launch of OSX ML to that announce DD is not compatible, then a month later inform us that we have to buy DD again if we want it to work on our computers.

Usually in these circumstances the manufacturer offers a greatly reduced (€10) upgrade path for loyal users who earned the company its money in the first place.

I have no argument for paying full price for a new version – but I strongly object to being forced into buying it by a stealthy operator who effectively leaves me no choice.
