after fresh install of mountain lion, immediate 'upgrade' for the lack of a better term - to mavericks, my audio recording and playback became a total hit and miss (mostly miss) also tried to see if the latest beta 10.9.2 would resolve issues but more surfaced than it fixed (still audio / video problems with cameras / usb3 / timemachine backups failing etc etc) upgrading back to ML and my system is now at least once again usable albeit still buggy. (late 2013 iMac 27") 1 star for value as i do very much value my time and this has cost me plenty.

Perhaps what the folks at skype are leaning toward is NOT being out of the way but making it a focal point in-your-face application. But ven its its most minimal state interface (without hiding), it takes up way too much room and I dont always wish to hide it. I would like to be able to glance at a small portion of my screen to see who's on, off, available, dnd, etc. with standard notifications for chat, invite etc. I dont mind if it uses a reasonable amount of resources during video/audio chatting as long as its minimal resources and minimal presence when not doing so.

I really do not like the new interface. Must it be so 'in your face' ?

If things dont change, to what appears to be not only my likings, I am hoping for Face Time to further develop soon, as I am already very impressed with its direction so far.
.
PS - I really enjoyed Skype and hope to do so again but only if it changes for the better real soon.

This app has been great although some transcodes have resulted in no sound. Today during cued encodes it gobbled up 'active memory' until my 16Gb was full and my system (10.6.4) became almost unresponsive. Quitting HandBrake and relaunching the cue freed up the memory although during re-encoding it is currently back at gobbling active memory. My encode may not finish in time before my system becomes unresponsive again.

Aside from the problems posted a few lines down, I am also experiencing crashing unexpectedly when attempting to convert QuickTime movies with 'Animation' codec converting to H264 mp4 (which loads fine as the source but fails to start converting and crashes after a few seconds with no progress / time progress noted in the bar before the crash).

Several other attempts with other source formats that load as source with different conversion settings have also produced crashing results but i do not recall the exact configs. I will have to look at either installing an older version or unfortunately look into alternatives if i am unable to convert successfully. Very hopeful of fixes as I have until recently been very impressed with HB.

I almost did the backflip of joy when i saw this new version, with all the updated elements and visual interface....until... I wanted to convert to AVI XviD or DivX. This is the file format for my upconvert DVD player I just bought. Really miss it in the new version, simply changing the extension from MKV to AVI doesnt fool my player. Since this file container is missing (albeit obsolete to many - but not yet to me), I have to give it less stars than the complete full 5 stars. Also some h264 encoded movie trailers are converting so that audio pitch is waaaay dowwwwwn lowwwww. :(

Can anyone suggest a good post handbrake processing tool to passthrough audio and video from MKV to an AVI container? TYIA

I compared this version to the latest stable one, same youtube hd video - watching processor cpu usage for safari and the plug in...

I did not find any significant improvement if any at all as on both occasions cpu usage reported by Activity Monitor was hovering between 65% - 85% with spikes to 124% when click seeking.

just for comparison sake, playing an h264 720p apple trailer using quicktime plugin within safari = 11% - 20% ... This is comparable to how flash vids play under Win7 for me (and I am not trolling here as many others would strongly agree by their own experiences.)

such a shame. I am still... yes still (what choice do I have) hoping to see a change for the better as future builds become available.

Agreed! Rogue Amoeba Rocks! I have purchased Audio Hijack Pro as well as Nicecast. Both very useful with many great features and superbly crafted. Although I am still having some issues with Snow Leopard 10.6.1 with various apps, I am hoping an update from Apple will resolve any crackeling I am getting through 'pitch' filter using external iSight mic input.

Just curious, this update is listed for the 21 Oct. but I have had this version for some time now self updated. Is it a different build?

One thing I dont understand and that is the new version of uTorrent is listed today as a new software update to version 0.9.2... yet, previous comments are dated Sept 15 and Sept 16 for this same version. Hmmm. Is this really a new version that came out today???

As an addition and change of my review, I have noticed that just having it chosen in the system preferences, my core2duo intel is heavily taxed at 53% CPU - Yikes!!! Less points for value as even though it is free, its charging a heavy fee on my processors for a simple screensaver. I will have to remove it and wait for better days.

Seems for me at least the app self-terminates after the first launch. Works well after relaunch then setting the preferences. I have noticed though that only my BOOSTA and BOOSTB fans have not been reportedly spinning at 1100 rpm at idle as they had been prior to 2-3 days ago even after cold startup they are showing minimum 1485 rpm and set in SMCFC to 1100 (hardware default). I have reset pram as well as unplugging my machine and pressing the power button for 2-3 seconds to no avail. Revs up from 1100 to 1485 on restart right away. Processor temps are reporting a nice cool 34C for both and no apps except this browser window running. Ambient temp is also a cool 21C. Not sure why I cant bring down the CPU fan speeds back down to 1100 to their hardware default temps at idle. Wondering if having Win 7 on Parallels Desktop (Installed but not running) have anything to do with that.

Any suggestions / ideas would be welcome. TYIA.

After resetting the SMC properly (Unplugging and pressing power button on my MacPro for 5-7 seconds and replugging it) I am happy to report that all is well and CPU fan speeds at idle are back to normal spinning at 1100 rpm.

In addition, after further testing, setting the CPU fan speeds to 1300 from the default hardware speed (~1100) will produce a fan speed readout for BOOSTA and BOOSTB at that same ~1485 rpm. Only after lowering the settings to SMCFC minimum (800 rpm) am I able to get those fans to report the hardware minimum of ~1100.

Not sure whats happening but it had been SMCFC had been working well for me for the past year or so on different machines including my MacPro. Perhaps when it is fully supported and SMCFC is updated will I be at ease in regards to fan speeds settings. :-|

Not sure whats wrong but the equalizer has no effect at all for me. enabling it for full treble or full bass I hear no difference while playing back a movie.

I knew I may have that type of response if I didnt write '..enabling it...'
'enabling' is the same as 'activating' in my books and yes it was enabled / activated.

wish it worked similar to Apple EQ's. VLC's +20dB and 2 pass and sound is a lot more quiet than not having it enabled / activated at all with all levels boosted by 10 dB. Just doesnt make sense to me.

Some level of success at least after deleting version 1.0 wit preferences and replacing it with 0.86i - I was able to get the EQ at least operational. then removing that version and preferences and replaced version 1.0

just doesnt sound like its working properly.

Great features and alot of fun... one problem that puts a damper on the whole app for me is that the video is somewhat muted compared to the original source video. no matter how i try to compensate with its brightness / contrast / color setting, it seems i have only about 50% of all the levels from the original. boosting levels does not help much. so far only tried with ichat but I am expecting the results to be similar.

I also had software update troubles. After an extremely slow 31.3 Mb software update thought it had completed and asked for a restart. after preparing for installation, no progress and i had to force restart. upon restarting software update was unable to find an update server the first time. after a second attempt fewer items were shown in the update list although no updates such as QT, iTunes etc had actually installed (only downloaded at the first attempt). After downloading any remaining updates (not 10.5.7 update) preparing to install failed again and sat at 'preparing' for 20 minutes before giving up and force restarting once again. All of this happened after a fresh clean format / install. I will re-install 10.5.2 from my intel imac disks and hope for better luck. :(
