Downloading and installing apps on your Mac isn’t always such a clear, straightforward process. Different apps need to be installed in different ways – so even if you think you understand how the process of downloading and installing an app works, you might come across another app that needs a different installation process. Let’s take a look at a couple of ways of installing apps, and then we’ll talk about a way to make your life much easier!
Installing and downloading DMGs
For this example, let’s look at Onyx and go through the process of downloading and installing it onto your computer.
First, you need to download the app from the listing here. Once the file has downloaded, you’ll need to find it – which can actually be fairly tricky. You’ll want to check your downloads folder for the file; you can access your downloads folder either from the right side of your dock (near the trash can icon), or by using Spotlight to search for it (press the command and space keys, then type “downloads”).
Now, once you’ve found the downloaded .dmg file using either of the above methods, click on it to open. A normal dmg will either open immediately to the app window, or it might have you read through and agree to the terms and conditions before installing the app.
Here’s what the app window looks like when it’s open (and you’ve gone through the terms and conditions, if necessary). From here, all you have to do is drag the app icon from its current position over to the “Applications” folder and drop it in there.
Onyx will then be copied to your “Applications” folder and is ready to use! Once you locate the app, you just need to double-click it to launch.
Installing PKG files
The other type of file you might come across when downloading apps are .pkg files. These files install in a way that’s pretty similar to the previous steps you just followed, but with a few exceptions.
For example, download iDrive by following the steps in the previous section. Find the app in your downloads folder using one of the two methods already discussed, then click the .dmg file to open it. You’ll notice that you’re now looking at a different window than you were before – there’s an image that looks like a package that’s been opened. Double-click this to continue with the installation process.
After you double-click the package icon, you’ll have to follow a short installation process. You’ll click “Agree” to accept the terms and conditions (reading them first if you’re so inclined), then type your admin password to continue the installation.
After you click “Install Software”, the app will install itself and then launch upon completion. If it doesn’t launch, you can go to your “Applications” folder and launch it.
Installing apps with MacUpdate Desktop
Now that you know how to install apps manually, it’s time to take a look at MacUpdate Desktop and see why it makes installing apps so much easier – and quicker – than using the previous two methods.
Besides being a great time-saver, MacUpdate Desktop is free if you want to use it to install apps. Download and install MacUpdate Desktop using the above methods. Once you’ve got it installed, you’ll be able to download and install future apps with just a couple of clicks!
For example, say you wanted to download and install Forklift, a powerful file manager app. Go to its listing on MacUpdate, then click the “Install Now with MacUpdate Desktop button”. On the following page, click “Allow” to let MacUpdate Desktop launch. The rest is taken care of for you – MacUpdate Desktop will automatically install the app, and you can quickly launch it by clicking “open”! How easy was that?
And now that you’ve got MacUpdate Desktop on your computer, you can find additional apps by going to the MacUpdate website and using the search bar at the top of the page to find what you’re looking for – or, you can just search right in MacUpdate Desktop to find and install apps even more quickly.
Installing apps can be confusing. But when it’s broken down into smaller steps, the process isn’t that complicated – and it’s almost exactly the same for every app you’ll want to install. Now you’re installing apps like a pro!
