Stream movies to a DV device.

Overview

MovieOut takes your movies and streams them to a DV device such as a DV camera (with firewire/i-link). It can stream with most Quicktime compatible formats/codec including DV & MPEG-4. Included are editing features and ability to export to many other movie formats (i.e. AVI, MPEG-4, DV, etc.)!

File under: "Trash". If you enjoy force-quitting applications, then you'll *LOVE* MovieOut. When you factor in that you get to "try" it for a whole 5 minutes before the trial expires (which is actually spent restarting the app), you got yourself a real winner! All this for only $19.95!!! One star for potential coolness. To the developer: Keep working on it and let us know when it works and only costs $9.95 (or even less).

Yes. SimpleVideoOut is the exact same thing and is free from Apple. Save your money. http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/SimpleVideoOut/SimpleVideoOut.html What I would rather see is this made into a plug-in for Quicktime so that I could use that to play movies out to a DV device rather than a separate app.

Apple's SimpleVideoOut does the same thing except it's free and doesn't have an annoying dialog box that makes you wait when you quit the program. http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/SimpleVideoOut/SimpleVideoOut.html

I think a great added feature would be to pipe DVD player output to DV for watching movies on TV. I know the resolution is worse but my tv is more mobile than my computer monitors, and it's nice to get the screen closer to cozy places sometimes.

Yup, I agree. I really want this for watching quicktime movies on my TV via my DV camcorder (why, oh why, didn't my G4 PowerMac come with TV out??). Matting for non 4:3 material is essential, and I agree, the framerate issue is sometimes a problem - though if it's having to convert AVIs or MOVs to DV on the fly, maybe I don't know what that demands of the Mac... Anyhow, I agree, fix these and you'd get at least a few bucks from me. Does anyone know if the developer is even still working on this? (And does anyone have any other TV-out/DV camera suggestions?)

Contrary to the other reviews that MovieOut has received, I believe that it is a good program with a lot of potential. If your avi, mov, mpg, etc. file is converted to a dv stream first, then the frame rate is excellent. Also its better to use this instead of iMovie, because I ran into a weird 10min limit on clip size. This way, I just use Quicktime Player Pro to export to dv stream, then open it in MovieOut, put it out to camcorder, which in turn, puts it out to a VCR. Five minute trial period is harsh.

OK for a 1.0.x release, but still needs substantial tweaks before it's worth paying a shareware fee. It handles MPEG files very poorly. It doesn't acheive full frame rate (and any DV device can easily handle 30 fps, so this isn't a hardware limitation). It needs to smooth the video somehow. And it needs the option to matte video that isn't 4:3 against black instead of distorting it. Fix the first two, and either of the last two, and paying the shareware fee will be worth not waiting for iMovie to render the video to DV for output.
