Address Book Exporter is a little utility that does one thing, and one thing only: it will let you export your Mac OS X Address Book as a tab-delimited plain text file. Apple doesn't include this feature in its application, though you may want to have it to create mailing lists, upload address books to webmail servers, etc...

As I couldn't download it from the dev anymore (seems to have packed up and gone home), I did a little search and found these still working links (at the time of writing). Grab them while they're there if you need this.

I can't get this to totally work. I managed to download from the 2nd link but when I try to create an envelope, it asks me for the return address, can't use mail merge from that source. Then when I try to do it from the mail merge, it doesn't configure the envelope correctly. It prints it along the top left of the envelope that has to go in lengthwise from the back. (I'm not explaining that correctly). So...it would appear that somehow I've exported my address book to a document but I still cannot appropriate merge to use to print envelopes. This is a REALLY bad oversight for Mac.

My goal was to get my contacts out of Address book and into Windows Live Mail. WLM would not import the .vcf file that the Address Book export generated.

I used Address Book Explorer to get contacts out of Address book as a txt file then dropped this file into Numbers. I then used Numbers to convert the file to a .cvs file which WLM contacts would import

I hope this helps

The info block for the app shows that it was releases in 2003, when Intel Macs were just a gleam in Steve's eye. The platform is listed as PPC (aka PowerPC).

Lion has removed Rosetta, the compatibility layer that let you run PPC apps.

So, you can't run this on Lion, unless you dredge up a Snow Leopard disc and try installing Rosetta.

Brilliant!! I wish that I had found this earlier.

I was really looking for an exporter to a spreadsheet (eg Excel) but this did the trick. I copied the text file into Word, converted to a table, and took the file into Excel. Easy!!

Many thanks indeed.

I have been trying to convert my address book to CSV using address book exporter without any luck. The instructions are "To install this software, drag the icon to your application folder" I get the response the application folder can't be modified. I also got a file xxxxxx.CSV on the desk top which seems to be without any files and when I try and upload it to vertical response it quits with an error response. can someone help?thanks

Address Book Exporter 2.1.2. Works perfectly and quickly. Immediately solved a problem that I had trying to get a contact list to PC users. Why didn't Apple include this? Thanks.

Hello, thank you BUT : Clicking on "export ALL" did not work when I tried to import the txt doc into Palm Desktop, the problem may be coming from Palm also. It only exported the addresses that were groups. It also duplicated cards (since some cards were in 2 or 3 # groups). Any suggestions?

This is an issue that I ran into when using Address Book to CSV (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29681)

Your CSV file may need to be formated properly in order to get it to import properly into Outlook on a P.C.

The issue is explained in the link below:
