mpegToaster is a high performance mpeg audio player; from what users tell, it's by far the fastest player on Mac OS X. If you have an mpeg player running while you do real work, this is the application you need. mpegToaster uses very little processor time and memory; a highly optimized version of mpg123 is used to decode mpeg audio data and playing is done through the CoreAudio interface, which has minimal overhead.
What's new in mpegToaster
Version 2.0b1 adds the following:
Revamped user interface; most of the new design work for 2.0 was done by Joar Sjöström.
Support for iTunes' music library.
AltiVec detection is now done at runtime, so there is no need for a separate version.
Dock menu.

Buggy. Launched my iTunes playlist
right on start, when I created a new one
played two secs from one tune and then two
secs from another.
Tried to save a new playlist (or .songlist as it
calls them), said the document exists and wouldn't let me do anything else.
Needs work! Otherwise fast as hell even on my beige G3 with 10.2.3
Doesn't crash but it constantly:
• Plays the incorrect song (seems to play the song in the list after the one you try to play)
• Jumps forward one track when you double click a song to play it.
• Stops playing altogether
• Will not really change playlists (audio) even though the list displays new titles. For example, selcct playlist 2 & when you try to play youhear songs from playlist 1.
• Plays songs at the INCORRECT SPEED!!! How do you manage that one? Its been playing my mp3's twice as fast as they are supposed to be played.
This app would be cool if it WORKED.
Nice player, especially if you dont want to keep all your MP3's in iTunes but has some bugs with playing from your iTunes playlists.
When I play the library its fine. WHen I stop & change to an iTunes playlist from the file > iTunes menu it just starts playing the last selected somg from the library again rather than the sing I've selected in the playlist, OR it just plays silence.
Not being able to sort by things like artist or albun kinda sucks too. I dont know how it sorts the playlists, since its apparently not in alpha order by artist or by album or even by song.
Overall. despite the bugs, its a great alternative if you've got a lot of apps open, say Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign & dont want to start watching iTunes bog your system down.
I got annoyed by iTunes. It has a huge appetite for CPU power and a habit of making my hard disk to produce a constant clock like ticking sound when playing mp3's. Why can't iTunes do some caching? Luckily MpegToaster solved my problems. Still I wish the MpegToaster's playlist system were as intuitive as iTunes'.
