ecto overview

ecto is a feature-rich desktop blogging client for Mac OS X, supporting a wide range of weblog systems, such as Blogger, Blojsom, Drupal, MovableType, Nucleus, TypePad, WordPress, and more. ecto is the successor of the wildly popular Kung-Log. With ecto you can write and manage entries for your weblog(s). The advantage over using your weblog's control panel is that you can compose entries offline and use the extra features ecto offers, such as spellcheck, creating links, attachments, amazon support, Flickr integration via 1001 and much more. ecto is designed to make blogging much more easier and yet give the users as much power as possible to manage their weblogs.

Features:

  • support for multiple weblogs and servers (with easy-to-use Account Manager)
  • full local control of recently posted entries and drafts (with search function)
  • intuitive interface for creating and editing weblog entries
  • a Rich Text and an HTML editor with spellcheck and search/replace
  • syntax-coloring in the HTML editor
  • quick access menu with HTML tag templates and keyboard shortcuts (fully customizable)
  • support of all available remote control options of MovableType API (posting entries with continuation, summary, keywords, multiple categories, trackback, text-formatting, comment options)
  • advanced create-a-link dialog
  • easily change the posting date of entries
  • full-featured HTML-rendered preview of entries using Safari's WebKit
  • powerful file and media upload, incl. iPhoto import, via attachments
  • convert, scale images and create thumbnails
  • create poster movies or create thumbnails from movie frames
  • save settings on a per-blog basis
  • send notifications by email (with Address Book support)
  • insert details of the currently playing iTunes song in your entry
  • embedded debug console to troubleshoot server connections
  • extensive help documentation accessible from within ecto
  • hate the metal and icons? Set the window texture via the Preferences window and change icons with the supplied switcher!
  • works with NetNewsWire, PulpFiction, and Shrook
  • localized in Chinese, Dutch, French, German, and Japanese
  • support for del.icio.us, the social bookmarks manager
  • Services menu items to blog selected text (with extra features for Safari)
  • Flickr integration via 1001 app
  • Amazon Tool
  • and much much more!

Sad. I was looking at some reviews and Ecto was the best blog writer. But unfortunately, it hasn't been updated in 7 years. And the developer illumineX hasn't updated their website in 7 years as well. Their website no longer has a forum also. So I can assume that Ecto is unfortunately dead software.

This software used to be useful, but now it crashes all the time while trying to launch the app. Please update the app to be workable with Mavericks.

Ecto is very much alive. Just received this note from the illumineX CEO who writes: "Yes, we've been doing a lot of work to ecto. We're going through the entire codebase, updating it to the modern Snow Leopard APIs so that it will be more stable and responsive. We've made about 2700 changes so far, and have a few more to go before we can release an update." Anxious to put this new ecto version to good use and know a lot of others are, too!

This software seems to have been abandoned. The current version is extremely buggy and unstable. Developer is AWOL. Too bad since it was good in the day but that day is gone.

This WAS a great app, before it was acquired and left to die by current developer. The website of the developer has not been updated in a long time, and I cannot figure out how to get support. The website forum is down, and the developer contact info I haven't been able to find. The biggest problem I have with this software, and it's HUGE, is that it keeps deleting parts of my posts! UNBELIEVABLE, but true. I discovered it when I went back to my latest entry, and found the last half was missing. At first I thought it was human error ... maybe I had deleted part by mistake. Thankfully I had a backup, and I replaced it. Then, I noticed after I saved the post, that the last half was missing again in the preview window! In HTML code, the last half was just not there. I pasted it back, in HTML mode this time, with all the proper tags. It did it again. Sometimes it would delete a longer or shorter portion. Sometimes, if I didn't edit the file, and clicked on and off the entry, it would reappear ... only to be partially deleted when I opened to edit. Then I looked back through old entries, which happen to include important and personal blog entries, that many of them were partially missing. It was like the app had shot holes in my life story for the last several years. Believe me, I was not happy. If you value your data, do not buy this version! You may never recover it. I am reporting on version 3.0.2. I am currently switching over to MacJournal, which unfortunately it not as elegant in some ways, but seems much more polished and is better supported.

I agree with LEOOFBORG. Have voiced our concerns for a year, frustrated about lack of response from developers. This is what happens when almost-great software is acquired and left to die. I wish there was Bring more competition out there, but unfortunately nothing beats Ecto, which is even more frustrating.

Ecto is a great blogging app on par with everything else out there, like MarsEdit, and I've used it for years and will continue to do so. It's a 4-5 star app with two BIG minuses. Two REALLY BIG minuses at this point: 1/ 3.0 hasn't been bugfixed in over a year. And there's a serious data loss bug that was reported pre-version three that was NEVER FIXED. See this forum entry: 'Draft Post Wiped (3.0b44)' at http://is.gd/6PSW6 I emailed them about this bug days ago and never heard back. And I can't get on the forums (below). 2/ Older Ecto users are not allowed on their forums to report issues, even tho' we're licensed users. And as others have said, all emails to support are ignored. Ecto's a great app, getting long in tooth, but if Illuminex doesn't work on support and bugfixes, it's going to be 'formerly' a great app really quick. 4-5 stars for the app as it is now. -1 for not fixing a serious, documented bug and another -1 for unresponsive support.

I get the same message when trying to use ecto on WordPress. I guess we will have to wait until ecto3 is out. It is in beta at this time.

I'm trying to log into my blogger account and I always get this message when I start up: Failure A list of blogs could not be retrieved! Please verify the account you created. I've tried using the alternative access point provided in the ecto forums, and resetting my password, but no luck!

Used to be the best... but has become totally unstable and unusable under WordPress. Posts disappear, and accounts show only a fraction of a blog's entries online. I've been waiting for an update to address these serious issues... but unfortunately ecto 3 is nowhere in sight.

It's probably the best blogging app for the Mac and I use it a lot...but I alwas find the GUI a bit odd and outdated... How come endo looks so cool and ecto so "OS 9ish"...?! A sleeker and sometimes more intuitive interface would be really great...

Just tried "MarsEdit" because it is a Unibin and let me tell you that it is nowhere close to ecto. It has no iPhoto integration, drag and drop of images did not work for me. After mere 5 minutes I went back to ecto. Please, please, please....released the UniBin version of Ecto, I love the app but if before my trial period ends there is no Unibin, my money will go to Mars ;)

This software makes blogging extremely simple and it works with a number of platforms. On top of it being great software, the support behind the product is top-notch and very personal. At $17.95 this software is a steal and well worth it. They are currently in the works of a Universal Binary edition but the current version works quite well under Rosetta.
