Floppy driver for OS X.

Overview

The SWIM 3 Floppy Driver for Mac OS X and Darwin was announced on April 1, 2002.

This driver is for Apple-branded floppy hardware as used in the PowerBook G3 Series (Wallstreet and Mainstreet/PDQ), the Power Mac G3 (beige), and others. This driver is not for third-party floppy drives of any kind. Third party drives are either USB devices or ATA devices, while Apple floppy drives are raw Sony, Mitsubishi, or Panasonic drive mechanisms attached directly to the motherboard controller. This driver will not help you in any way with third-party devices, so please don't even try.

...if you wait patiently for several minutes after inserting the floppy, you propably get the floppy mounted. Works but is unacceptably slow - at least in my G3/300 powered PowerMac 7600. Which should not run x but it does...

I have installed this driver, or should I say run the package, numerous times and I don't see any difference. There is no trace of anything in the system, no app to run and I still can't see floppies on my G3 tower. There is no read me or documentation to look at so I don't know what it is I am missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Eamonn

Hi- If you want a solution to the floppy problem, here it is: you'll need an original or copied os 9 / 9.0.4 or 3 or 2 cd installation disk. Either use yours or borrow / copy one, or get one on ebay for about 20 bucks. Next, insert the disk and restart with the 'c' key depressed so that your machine will start up using the os 9 cd. Once its booted, insert the floppy, and drag and drop whatever you want. You can even reformat / debloat floppys using this method. The only thing to remember is that you have to copy to your hard drive icon or create a new folder on your HD. You wont be able to copy anything directly to the desktop. Easy. OSX trashes the drivers for the floppy drive when it rearranges the system during installation, and floppy use is disabled. laters, and enjoy your macs! Andy / Tx ps- drop me a note if you want, but i only check this email address monthly, thanx pps- the driver doesnt work just screws up your HD STAY AWAY!!!!!!

I'd love to review this...if the download site was ever on line. You can get the pieces, but the PKG just won't come. The lack of floppy support on my Beige G3 is the main thing stopping us from switching to OS X.

I installed the .96 version on a 7600-based G3/400 running XpostFacto and 10.2.6. I installed, restarted, popped in a floppy and .... NOTHING HAPPENS. Go figure...I hope that no damage has been done to my system. These earlier reviews are scary enough. Can one uninstall? Scott Strungis

What I had to do after installing this turkey to get the OS 9 drive to reboot properly: First off, the config is a 7500/G4 enhanced running Jaguar. The original 1.5G internal SCSI drive is still there with OS 9.1 on it. OS X was installed on a second 37G SCSI internal drive, and OS 9.2 is on there as well but because I didn't use OS9Helper to install the upgrade it can't boot into 9.2. Bored yet? Various things stopped working after install/restart. Internal CD and SCSI CD R/W stopped recognizing discs. Mail crashed. Most importantly the original 1.5 internal drive disappeared. Eventually the machine refused to boot from either drive. Booted from Norton 6: Norton noted various internal volume header and B-tree problems and fixed them. Startup control panel refused to use internal drive because the driver was screwed. Restarted from OS 9 CD and ran Drive Setup in Utilities folder, then reinstalled the driver on internal 1.5G OS 9. Startup control panel now allows setting it as the startup; selected it and restarted from internal 1.5G drive. Ran XPostFacto and restarted into OS X. You have to go through these steps first because neither the OS 9 on Norton 6 CD nor the OS 9 CD have the CarbonLib system files that XPostFacto requires.

Installed 0.96j on 7500/G4/400 w/10.2.6 and it wouldn't allow boot after installation. Utilities found errors galore, and I'm unable to resurrect the System after hours of work. I'd totally avoid this unless you absolutely need the floppy and have a drive & system to kill.

Hello, Using this package on an G3/400 upgraded 7600. Installed the swim3-0.96j.pkg package. Upon inserting the disk drive is accessed rather brute force like. It takes ages ( several minutes ) until a drive icon is displayed. The application even brings the finder to a halt, when accessing the content of the floppy. Content of OS.9 Disk is not displayed sometimes ( 0 items ). Some of my floppies where eben damaged and I had to format them. Ejecting a floppy takes about 3 Minutes, also with very loud noises from the drive. There is no manual with the package, no log to check where the file where installed. Needs a lot of work I guess.
