the app may be good for some people but I am having problems with it, even after reading the manual. I have repeatedly contacted synuim through the address on their site. I received 1 text only saying to use the site which I have been. I also responded to that text but nothing back. I want my money back but can not get ahold of any one to demand it. any oe have ideas for me.

I purchased the new version in November 2019, expecting that I would be able to continue using the macfamilytree software!! That, unfortunately hasn't been the case as version 9 does not facilitate my using the web search provider that I have always been able to use in previous macfamilytree versions. Find My Past no longer appears on the drop down list of web search providers that the latest software is compatible with. I have reported this to MFT by several emails and they promise every time that an update will be available that will allow the use of FMP!! That update was due end of November (didn't happen) end of December (didn't happen) and now end of January (didn't happen) I have now lost patience with MFT and requested a full refund from them and await their response!!!

I like the interface. Used this app. for a long time. But I hate the yearly upgrade. Especially if you work with others.

It has some good elements, until you get to the reports, views, charts, etc. which are RUINED. They are terrible looking. The old great MacFamilyTree8 templates are GONE and replaced with ones so bad you cannot fix them. I'm afraid to even look at what some non-designer has done to the websites. They better fix this fast.

Personally I was most impressed by the new interface, the new reports and the new statics. But there's a lot of other goodies for everyone. New is also the ability to store DNA information. It seems faster and it still is no 1 when it comes to intuitivity. Recommended!

Wow, you didn't accept having your GUI in lock step with Apple; thank you! You choose to pay attention to lots of good color and font choices and prefs to make your App pleasant to use for us who are legally blind/vision impaired. Many other Deves have refused to think outside the box to help their users; so have been forced to fight them. You respected the wise insights from the original HIG of 1985!

I have had several email exchanges but the step-issue is yet to be resolved. Here is the difficulty, taken from the Manual. "Enter "patchwork" families with a biological and a step or adoptive parent If a child lives in a family where only one part of the family is the biological mother or father and the other part is in a step or adopted relation to a child. Such a relationship requires some steps to create, but can also be entered into the database. You actually have to create three families in order to enter the mentioned relationships correctly, because children are assigned to families and not persons." This could be easily done invisibly in the background. This is on page 48 of the Manual. How to call a child 'step' is done on about page 17!

Please improve the way step relationships are dealt with - a virtual family can be created in the background with no user involvement and no intrusion into the interface. Spoils an otherwise good product.

I have used this for years, and have seen it improve. One of the good things is that the dev listen to the consumer, they answer to questions quickly and take suggestions seriously. Try it and you´ll love it!

Excellent program - which I find easy to use and very fully featured. As was noted by MaggiesDad, the relationship chart doesn't handle all situations elegantly, but the printed output is very nice and while it is easy to pick up, it also has a lot of flexibility too. I find that the various views and reports give a lot of interesting ways to view your data, including maps showing how people moved around during their lives, various forms of relationship charts and some nice website output options. I can't really fault it, and it comes with a very good manual too.

Just noticed on the Synium site that MacFamilyTree is on sale for $24.99 (through the MAS) until January 11. Nothing here about that, so I just thought I'd let people know. I just now purchased the software, so I can't review it yet...

I've used this software through several versions. I like the way it looks and I am comfortable with data input. In my tree there are many people and a lot of double cousins. It does not handle those relationships very well in the relationship chart, but other than that, it is great. I like it enough to pay for it. I will pay for the next version as well. I would like to be able to upload a site and not be told there is too much, and that I need to not load photos and other info. THAT didn't happen in version 6.

I have a question about the possible use of this software for a very special purpose, but when I visit the developer's website I can't find any "contact the developer" option. I really hate it when such a website lacks that option -- developers can NEVER anticipate all the questions that may arise, and just fobbing users of with a set of FAQ's is a terrible substitute.

I have a question for Synium Software. Immediately after I post this comment, I will submit the same message through their web-based "Contact Us" form on their website. We shall see which gets answered and if the replies are similar. ----------------------------------------------- I understand that Synium is ONLY distributing MacFamilyTree (MFT) through the Mac App Store (MAS) from now on. The MAS provides free updates for all software purchased there. Does this mean that ALL updates to MFT will be at no further cost? Synium states that updates such as 7.1, 7.2, etc will be at no charge. But what about version 8.0? Will that be introduced on the MAS as a whole new application such as "MFT Pro" and require a whole new purchase AGAIN?? And what about version 9.0? Will that be called something like "MFT Platinum" and require yet another full purchase? Apparently, there was a period during which MFT 7 was offered at a discount. It is not Synium's fault I missed that window. I am willing to re-purchase MFT at full price IF I will not need to purchase it again and again to obtain the inevitable version updates. I would appreciate a prompt reply. For your information: I am posting this same message to Macupdate.com. Please note that your reply to this question will be posted to Macupdate.com, as will any lack of a reply within a reasonable timeframe. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Love the app, hate the compromises it had to make to get on the App Store. Number one problem is this iCloud nonsense -- MFT used to have a wonderful, flawless local sync option so you could maintain two computers in sync at home. Your data never left the house. Now we have to sync it to iCloud and trust Apple with our personal info? I guess you can use Dropbox, but same problem. Now that we know the government has access to all these cloud services, I don't know if I want to put anything up there. Please bring back local sync!

MFT not good, you must buy the upgrade only on store & only if u're on OS10.7. i'm on 1068 & don't want change for the moment. Very unpleasant, always "you have to, you have to" So i can't benefit from this upgrade BAD Reunion is not so boring

As a long time MFT user I moved to version 7 as I have always enjoyed MFT and appreciated the Synium support when running into trouble. To me this is one of the best pieces of software around. I also bought Heredis, partly because of how duplicates are handled MFT 7: in V6 and didn't see the all info I needed to decide if a duplicate was there or not but learned to live and deal with it. In V7 this has become even more complicated: context of potential duplicates is limited and cannot be viewed in comparison. This kills my way of working on data. That's where Heredis kicks in. Of course now I have to deal with the typical Gedcom troubles because MFT exports to Gedcom 5.5.1 and Heredis to Gedcom 5.5. Still a 5 star app but no longer my one-in-all tool for my genealogy research.

Looks like Snow Leopard will be my last Apple OS X and MacFamily Tree 6 will be my last Synium Software. Their ill conceived logic or lack of and their insistence on the App store, destroy and stifle free and open enterprise! CHOICE! They have already stopped supporting my other "purchased" Synium Software, Chronories, because of their decision, for App Store distribution exclusivity. Below is their explanation on their web site for discontinuing Chronories and the reason why I choose to avoid the App Store Software whenever possibly. "Why have we stopped selling Chronories?" "Apple implemented some major modifications to the way applications are allowed to interact or access data from different applications. Unfortunately, Chronories is one of the applications that are severely affected by these decisions. While technologies like "Sandboxing" improve the general security of the whole system, several applications can no longer be maintained as before. Even updates to the existing app are nearly impossible because Sandboxing is required for any further update." "This is we had to stop selling Chronories... although we really liked it a lot."

Yes, it is only available through the MAS, this is very clearly explained by the developer on their website. However I believe it is unfair for "reviewers" to give the program a low rating because they do not like the distribution channel. When programs are updated to include new features which only work with the latest OS, there will eventually be a time to upgrade to the latest hardware as well. Some people will have the hardware and the OS to support those features and some will not. Some will be happy to buy through the MAS and some will not. There is a demo available so no-one is forced to purchase blind, without having a chance to try it out. I rate the program for what it is and what it can do. I still maintain it is the best Mac app for genealogy. Five stars. Issues with the MAS or regarding communication with the developer should be assessed somewhere else, IMHO.

I reiterate the comments I made on a earlier version: Excellent program for genealogy, beautiful and stylish, versatile and a real joy to use. Of all the Mac genealogy apps I have tried it is simply the best value for money. Is under active development and there are regular updates which add new features. Like any software you need to learn the ins and outs but once that's done its easy and straightforward to add and import data. Media handling is good, charting is excellent, the 3D family tree is unique. I've been using it since version 4. Recommend.

Communications with the developer seem non-existent. I purchased this several years ago and recently wanted to upgrade and begin using it again. I couldn't find my registration so I could upgrade, so email the developer and have not had a reply. I don't mind paying for good apps...I have paid for nearly 200 of them. But one thing I'm paying for needs to be support.

Had a little bit of trouble when I updated to 6.3.3 (the database migration issue). Contacted Synium and they offered to check by DB's integrity (as the migration stalled several times), before I could even upload it, they had a fix (6.3.3c)! Did I mention this was on a Saturday? I've been using the product since about 2007 (version 4). They continue to update and add features. They are extremely responsive when there's an issue and the pairing of MobileFamilyTree Pro for the iPhone is phenomenal. Being able to hunt down family plots and enter information updates without dragging along my MacBookPro is a huge plus. All in all, great product. Easy to enter information, allows you to build families on the fly. Although I'm not crazy about the three dimensional family tree, some love it and use it for navigation. The only thing it is missing, is a way to get the information out in printed form (similar to what you see at Ancestry.com would be perfect). That being said, its reports are fairly easy to generate. The "Ahnentafel Report" feature woud be spectacular if there was a way to "church it up" as my West Virginia friend would say.

Had quite a bit of trouble getting this to work! I followed the advice and deleted my copy from Applications, then downloaded version 6.3.3c. When trying to open this, SOPHOS InterCheck went into overdrive, using a smidgeon under 100% of CPU and MacFamily Tree refused to open, the icon just bouncing in the dock! I am using a workaround by excluding MacFamily Tree from SOPHOS's On Access Scanning, whereby the Program is working normally. NOT IDEAL!

This is the first genealogical program I've tried. I guess it's OK but not intuitive in the least. I do have to refer to the user guide quite often and I'm Mac literate. Also, why can't the software / data file have any security features? I have to lock it down via the OS's get info. This concerns me.

PROS: Generally easy to use and organize your family tree. Pleasing interface. Most of the 'pros' have already been stated here by other user reviews so I won't rehash them here. CONS: There is only one con that I can offer, but in my opinion it's a big one. While the application is visually pleasing on the monitor, this doesn't translate to the 'printed' version. There are some basic editing options but I believe this app could use a strong facelift on this side of things. As well, graphics often get cut off when a report if printed overall multiple pages with only very rough work-arounds possible. VERDICT: This is a really great application and overall the experience has been good. If you're sure you'll never need to print anything out it's really the best I've seen for mac. However if you do want to print out a quality, pleasing family tree you may consider looking elsewhere first.

Uncluttered, logical and easy to use! The visual tree in the edit mode is just awesome. I have tried several genealogy packages and none looked and behaved like MacFamily Tree. I set up a test tree to try it out and after just a few additions of people got the hang of it. The help manual has all the answers and will guide you to advanced uses of the software.

I love using this program. My sister is 1000 miles away and working on a Windows machine but with this program she was able to export a file that imported seamlessly. MacFamilyTree is just a gorgeous program. To see the graphics of who a person is related to in a 3d movable image is incredible. I love using this program I just need to learn more to take full advantage. I can't change the Ease of Use to the 4 stars it should get.

Took a long time to sift through all the other suites available to do what I wanted to do: record and display as much detail as possible about my family and the families of composers I admire and am studying. MacFamilyTree was by far the most fully-featured, visually-appealing and easiest to use when I completed that process several years ago. Since then it's grown in almost every way into a truly mature, comprehensive and versatile program that is very easy indeed to use - yet full of great power. On those few occasions when I have had cause to contact the developers for one reason or another over the years, they have always been quick, thorough, friendly and helpful in every way - always solved whatever problem I have. Recommended on every count. Definitely the best!

I bought MobileFamilyTree some days ago and will tomorrow order MacFamilyTree, but I do not know if it's best to order it through the AppStore or through the Synium web store. Is it the same version at both the AppStore and Synium web store? Will it be possible to update/upgrade the software through the webstore even if the app is bought through the AppStore and vice versa? I love what this app has let me do -- I use it more than any other app on my Mac at the moment. At first the interface felt a bit complicated, but once you get the hang of it it feels quite natural and fast. You will want to read the manual once you get beyond the basics. Like the last reviewer, I continue to hope for better graphics. They are decent, but not always functional. For example, long text (e.g. baptismal locations) are cut off even when there is a ton of room on the page to expand the box. It's very frustrating because there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. With OS X's graphical abilities, it seems strange that this limitation persists. The addition of the tree chart in 6.2 is quite nice though I wish the connecting lines were darker or customizable (e.g. make them dotted, dashed, etc). Overall a very nice app and I feel like I got my money's worth. Let's hope development continues! The developers seem dedicated and helpful, though the one time I did email a feature request they indicated it was already available -- but did not explain where. I was reluctant to ask again so I let it slide...but does anyone know how to make the fan chart blood relatives only?

I'd recommend this to anyone interested in creating a family tree and using a Mac. From complete beginner, and in only four months I've added 800+ names to mine. The software is powerful and visually rich; updates appear regularly, synching to my iPad has been smooth, and on the few occasions I've contacted the developers, customer service has been swift and helpful. To be fair, I'd give it five stars if I'd taken the time to compare it with other options but I feel no need to. Very happy with what I've got.

So far - so good. I had purchased Reunion years ago to use... and while lI was impressed with the options, I had grown unaccustomed to software that was never updated and also never looked anything newer than 10 years old on my macbook pro. I can accept utilitarianism over aesthetics most every simple time, but Reunion was MORE than I needed and this seems to be almost a little lower than I wanted (Family Tree synch dear folks at LDS??? - that is a main reason I bought it... still not working yet due to the info structure of how the LDS is reprogramming stuff for computerized record keeping). That being said, I sure wish there were plug ins or add ons somewhere... over all though, not bad at all.
