Script Debugger overview

Script Debugger provides everything you need to quickly and easily author AppleScripts that work. No other scripting tool can match Script Debugger's capabilities for creating, editing and debugging AppleScripts. Its sophisticated Dictionary browser provides far more information than any other tool can and eliminates guesswork and needless experimentation. Simply put, Script Debugger makes AppleScript easy.

What’s new in version 8.0.6

Updated on Jul 04 2023

  • 1830 Use SD Notary 2 if it is available.
  • 1833 Resolved a hang that can occur when balancing or hovering over source code containing very rare instances of unbalanced parentheses characters within a block comment and unbalanced parentheses characters in a line comment.
  • 1827 Fixed issue where printing sometimes failed.
  • 1832 Reinstated the deprecated OSAAppleScriptObjCEnabled Info.plist entry for script bundles that use AppleScriptObjC. This is no longer required, but there are suggestions its presence helps eliminate some unexpected crashes in deployed scripts. The boolean expert preference key PrefIncludeOSAAppleScriptObjCEnabled can be used to turn inclusion on or off.
  • 1831 Fixed issue where run-only exports can fail when bundling used execute-only script libraries.
  • 1828 Corrected a long standing regression that prevented Script Debugger from respecting the Set Default Script Size & State command.
  • 1825 Resolved a terminology conflict between the application class' search string property and the dictionary window class' search string property. Any scripts using the dictionary window class' search string property must be changed to accommodate this change.
  • 1823 Corrected a display problem when viewing dictionary inspector search results.
  • 1822 Resolved a crash that can occur when the Printing theme is misconfigured.
  • 1820 Fixed issue where text encoding of .applescript files saved by Script Editor was not always properly detected.
  • 1817 Fixed bugs where exporting run-only from .scpt files. Used script libraries and user frameworks are correctly embedded when requested, and the source export preference is honored.
  • 1816 Resolved a problem where typed characters are inserted incorrectly while the Synchronize split-view selection Editor preference setting is enabled cause.

Debugging, Application explorer, Dictionary viewer, Code clippings, ASObjC integration, ’Open Quickly’…and a long list of other features that offer relief to pretty much all of AppleScript’s major headaches. I can’t tell you whether you’ll get a good return on your $99 because it depends entirely on how much scripting you do and how much time and effort you want to invest in doing more AppleScripting. I can tell you based on my own experience that if you are a habitual scripter, you’re going to find this app an utterly transformative piece of software so long as you’re willing to put in the time as well as the money to learn how best to exploit it.

I started to play around with Alfred 2 and AppleScripts. The OSX Editor is OK but it is outdated. Then I found Script Debugger. The price is not attractive but the 20 days trial was a nice deal. After using it for two days, in several scripts, I bought it. There are a lot of good things about it but the tabbed interface, the timer (so you can easily check which procedure is faster), the bookmark (adding —>> at the beginning of a comment), the ways results are displayed (even for every variable) and the interactive dictionary are great and very useful features that I can’t live without anymore. If you spend some time writing scripts give this application a try, a 20 days trial, and maybe you will find the fresh air AppleSctipt Editor is missing for so long...

Truly a must-have tool for Applescript Professionals and for serious hobbyists. I was not delighted with the oddball nature of Applescript when it debuted in 1993 or with the amateurish tools available for working with it. Fortunately Script Debugger v1.0 came out in 1995, I bought a copy, and I've been happily upgrading for 17 years now. Script Debugger makes discovering how scriptable applications work not just possible but relatively easy with its searchable dictionary, object-model, and explorer-view. Its library attachment mechanism makes reusing code very simple and streamlined. Version 5 now supports regular-expression-based search/replace and has many other enhancements. As usual I'm really pleased with the upgrade.

Brilliant tool. Wish I could use it, but it's simply way too expensive. If you aren't actually making money from writing AppleScripts (or rolling in dough), the price just makes this app unfeasible.

I have out of purchasing the app for a long time, put due to the price I always backdown at the last moment, but I eventually decided that it is a pretty featured app for a small market and the amount of time and grief it will save me is worth it, especially now that I spend a lot more time to write AppleSript for motor own use, if you are a profession AppleSctipt developer you would be crazy not to purchase ScriptDugger.

Amazing app. I couldn't imagine doing AppleScript without it. The single best feature for me is the ability to "Explore" applications instead of having to decipher the dictionary yourself. Once you find the AppleScript classes and properties you want, just drag those to the editor and get a correctly nested/referenced call. Cuts development time to a fraction. For me, this feature alone is worth the price of the app.

This is a really nice piece of software. It is what should be shipped with applescript on the mac. If you need or use applescript then you should get this.

Great piece of software. Code line ending using a semicolon would be really great in AppleScript. I am switching between Objective-C and AppleScript and I am often making such a mistake… display dialog "Test"; ;-) Good luck!

As a new-comer to AppleScript I was struggling to both understand Dictionaries and also to debug my code using the good, but somewhat limited, Apple Script Editor. Althought as a hobbyist I was somewhat put off by the relatively high price I downloaded ScriptDebugger and instantly fell in love. This is a fantastically powerful development environment which makes understanding applications' dictionaries much easier and provides extremely powerful debugging tools. As a birthday present to myself I bought a copy and I am delighted and know that the price of the application will be recouped many times over by the time Script Debugger will save me whilst writing scripts.

It just doesn't get any better than this. Script Debugger is absolutely the best AppleScript development environment availabe. The developer is very responsive to users and, based on user feedback, we've been told that SD 4 will be ported to Cocoa. With the attention to quality and detail that is always present in Script Debugger, I'm guessing that SD 4 will be one of the best Cocoa apps ever produced.
