Wiretap is a good COMPLIMENT to AudioX. Both should be in your basic audio toolbox.

-AudioX to capture from a Microphone

-Wiretap to capture from sources in the computer (DVD, iChat sessions, net radio, etc.)

Re: Comment by Anonymous: "What's the point when WireTap is freeware and does the same thing? $20 is lot for something which records sounds!"

Sorry; but you are wrong. Wiretap records audio out (audio that plays through the speakers on the mac).

AudioX, on the other hand, records audio coming in (from line in, microphone, etc.). It's a completely different application.

You shouldn't have given AudioX a bad review without at least learning enough about it to tell what it actually does...

What's the point when WireTap is freeware and does the same thing? $20 is lot for something which records sounds! If Apple had more sense then they'd build it into Mac OS X.

For those who think 20 bucks is a bit much, try the free program "Wire Tap" by Ambrosia Software (ambrosiasw.com).

I think something is broken because it won't record. I went back to 3.0 and everything is okay. I hope the new update is fixed soon because the new features look nice.

In the early and mid-1990s, there were all kinds of free utilities to record sounds from a mic. Somehow, after OS8, most of those went away or stopped working. AudioX is, to my knowledge, the first free piece of OSX software that you can use to record sounds from a microphone. I tried it out and -- while the features are bare-bones -- it works beautifully. Here is the top feature I'd request for the next version: currently AudioX only saves sounds as .MOV files, and it would be great if there were options to save sounds as mp3s. Overall, though, everything is very impressive. The software records cleanly and at a variety of sample rates. This was a very needed piece of freeware to create for the OSX community. My thanks to the programmer: I'll be using this a lot!
