Thanks for letting us know about Revolution's lack of an update policy. I was about to purchase the latest Mac Sale, which included RevStudio, as its anchor product, but your review, along with others, that pointed out the lack of an upgrade path, has saved me the money. It appears that by including RevStudio as part of Mac Sale, at a cheap price, they are trying to hook users on the product and then gouge them on the upgrade, since there is no upgrade path or discounts. Not cool. That's why I like the MacUpdate reviews. Not only do they turn me on to good products, but as in this case, they save me money on others that have significant issues.

The Runtime Revolution folks seem to have been hard at work - and it shows. Not only is version 3 a major and worthwhile upgrade, but also:

1) the developers have been sistematically squashing bugs and increasing the feature set of the application.
2) the Revolution community has been nurtured by the makers, and the happiness shows - at least for a newbie like me. It seems incredibly active, welcoming and helpful, and the developers participate actively in it.
3) the developers have listened to customers complaints about cost, and have brough the price down.

I admit, that I had given up on Revolution - 'round about version 2 - but this new version 3 made me want to use it again. I think now I don't really have an reasonable excuse not to renew my old license...

I've been using Runtime Revolution for a year now and am tremendously impressed with the quality of this product, especially version 3.0, which includes substantial improvements to the script editor. Admittedly, I get frustrated once in awhile, but it always turns out to have been my own fault. You'll need to spend a day or so getting used to its structure and idiosyncrasies, but after that its flexibility and ease of use is phenomenal, and its speed is unbelievable. The company is very responsive to bug reports. Highly recommended!

I just purchased 2.8.1 about 4 months ago from Runtime. I like the software but this is getting ridicules. You buy something and 2 months later or so here comes the next wiz bang piece of software with no free upgrades to those that just purchased the old version. We, as consumers need to send a message to all the companies that have come up with this new marketing plan and let them know that the WELL will run dry if they keep thinking that their customer base is made of money.

Really and truly

I absolutely refuse to upgrade to version 2.9 from 2.8.1. I paid a lot of money for this older version, which has been buggy as hell with NO updates. Now they want me to pay $199 to upgrade to this new version. I don't think so... I am done with this company and their bloody ridiculous upgrade policy.

I got a major surprise this afternoon - an e-mail with a link to my free 2.9 upgrade. I forgot I purchased a one-year plan for upgrades and the actual expiry date.

Apologies for my post above are in order, because it was my fault for not knowing when my plan expired. Sorry...

Revolution continues its prohibitively expensive update policy. Having updated to Revolution Studio in Feb 2006 for £139 because further support for DreamCard was discontinued at that point, I now find that I am asked to pay £199 for the update to version 2.7.2. Of course, the £199 also buys me any additional upgrades that Revolution may make in the following year.

Such a policy makes me long for HyperCard for OS X, a longing never to be fulfilled.

I like very much "Runtime Revolution" but there are many bugs about characters transcoding between Windows, Mac OS X and Linux applications...

Actually, I didn't find solutions to make a *real* crossplateform software... :-(

Please, have a look very soon for a better management of clipboard. :-)

Revolution is good, but a bit unstable and buggy. Comes closest to old HyperCard in many ways. I will stick to REALbasic until something even closer to old HyperCard becomes available. Revolution's upgrade policy or lack thereof makes it a very expensive tool for users and a great cash cow for the developer. I couldn't even get a minor upgrade without rebuying it!!! Worst upgrade policy I've seen. Won't buy the product ever again unless they do something more reasonable.

Actually, this is incorrect. You can purchase updates without buying the product again. I'm sorry that the person who posted this remained anonymous as unfortunately that means I can't help him/her directly.

If you are looking for something closer to HyperCard take a look at SuperCard. I have both Revolution and SuperCard and I much prefer SuperCard for most things.

Actually, it is correct that you have to re-buy it, unless you can afford to keep your license up to date. That means you have to buy all the major upgrades.

A more reasonable system would be to follow the example of Adobe, for example. I can skip several versions of photoshop, and still get an upgrade price. Not so with Revolution. I have stopped using Revolution. I can't afford it!

I agree with the earlier posts regarding Revolution's upgrade policy. I had Revolution 2.2 and paid $109 to upgrade. Several months later Revolution became Dreamcard and was priced at $49. I contacted Heather Nagey regarding the fact that I had paid more that twice as much for my upgrade than a brand new copy of Dreamcard cost. She saw nothing wrong with the situation. Now it appears that Dreamcard has been discontinued and if I want to upgrade from Dreamcard to Revolution Studio it will cost $199. An academic version of Revolution Studio sells for $189, and there is no upgrade price that I can find, so once again it would be less expensive to buy a new copy than to upgrade.

The only way to avoid these upgrade problems is to buy the renewal pack which gets you free updates for one year. However, even the renewal pack is not inexpensive.

As one of the earlier posts said, I can't afford to pay these prices for upgrades, especially when the upgrade is within version 2 rather than from 2 to 3.

It used to be that you can use it all with a limit of 10 arguments per object... I didn't upgrade recently, so I won't know.
