A while back I wrote a review for v9 that mentioned it was buggy, so I thought I should follow-up to say that I have found v10 to be rock solid. HUGE improvement in reliability in this release. Since I didn't mention it before I should point out one of Navicat's features that if you use it once will make the app worth the price: If you open a connection to two databases at the same time, you can migrate your tables (and views, procedures, etc) just by drag & dropping them from one db to the other. Boom. Done. No exporting & import. It's barely more difficult that moving a file across a network. Amazing. The other parts of the app continue to be refined, making editing tables, and stored procedures just a *little* bit nicer. And I know it's been there for a while, but the SSH tunnelling feature is enormously handy when trying to access a database behind a firewall. Thanks Navicat devs!

There are a number of decent and *free* database management programs out there but I found Navicat to be well worth the money. (You might think it seems like a lot but if you're spending even a few hours/week managing a DB I think Navicat is good value.) Unfortunately I'm stuck on version 8 because while the interface on 9 is much nicer, I find it crashes pretty much every time I use it. Sometimes it's because of a timeout on the server, sometimes it's just seems random. There seem to be a few buggy interface elements that pop up from time to time as well (the enum default-value menu comes to mind -- it often chooses the values of the previously selected enum field). So I'll stick with 8 for now. Hopefully 9.2 brings some stability.

Crazy stuff! I've been using Navicat for a long time now, and it proven itself an indispensable tool for managing MySQL databases. And I have lots and lots of them. Navicat does absolutely everything I need. Transfers, queries, data/structure sync, SSH/HTTP tunneling.. And support is beyond incredible! I files a crashing bug to them and got it fixed, AND the updated version of the program released in under 48hrs. I'm shocked! It is indeed an expensive tool, but considering how much time it'll save you in a long run, and hourly rate of almost any DBA/programmer who do DBs for living, the price is rather easily justifiable. Highly recommended.

This is THE product to own if you're doing MySQL work. No more myPHPAdmin crap. The power to not only create the database, but to managed it with micro edits right in the GUI is unmatched. Heavily recommend for those of you who know that time does equal money. ;-)

What's new refers to Navicat PREMIUM, not Navicat MySQL. From Navicat's site: May 20 2010 Navicat for MySQL (Mac) version 9.0.5 is now available Improvements: If the row is selected, Filter Wizard will now display the words in white color. Query Builder supports to show diagram for some incomplete statement. Bug Fixes: Crashed when getting server Information on Information View if connection failed. Improper join lines were displayed when joining multiple tables in Query Builder. Crashed when parsing some improper SQL statements. Wrong bit field default values were displayed in Table Designer for MySQL version 5.1.31 or above.

Version 9 is the update for Navicat I have been waiting for. I've used Navicat for 6+ years on both Windose and Mac. It has always had the same problem on both OS. Would randomly crash. At least 1 or 2 times a day. But with Version 9 on my Mac I have never had a crash. Definitely worth the $50 upgrade just to get rid of the random crashes. Buy it!

Could someone point me to to right direction on where to find the menu for opening a new Main window. I sometimes accidentally close the main window and cannot bring it up without restarting the entire application. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Still no Access import like the Windows version, very disappointing to see Macusers still have to put up with a crippled version. On the developers site it is almost impossible to find out what's new and why I would have to upgrade for $50,-. It's a pity, because Navicat may have some quirks, but I work with Navicat all day and overall I am very pleased.

Have been using Navicat for over two years. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best MySQL editor on the Mac. If you do heavy editing, you'll appreciate its versatility compared to web-based solutions. Download and check out the 30-day trial. Or grab the free version off their website if you are going to use it non-commercially. Some minor quibs: SSH tunneling is buggy. It regularly crashes whenever I use SSH tunneling on the road. Related to the above: You lose all your unsaved queries when it crashes. Very frustrating if you have several or more query tabs open! The GUI for editing triggers and stored procedures is non-intuitive. I frequently find myself typing up the SQL in a text editor like TextMate and pasting it into Navicat. When in table design, you can't duplicate rows. Also, there is something unintuitive about the whole process because I find myself having to resort to the mouse when adding stuff: Tabbing will not get you to all editable fields. The Mac version, for some reason, trails one point behind the Windows/Linux version. Not sure what you lose, but probably implies they devote less resources to the Mac side of their business. The query tool does process multiple SQL commands but will return results for only the last. Also, older results will disappear as soon as you edit the SQL or want to type in something new. So, whenever I need to compare results of two or more queries, I find myself opening multiple tabs and going back and forth between them. Would be nice if I could see the results on the same window somehow.

If you think that being forced to install things via command lines in Terminal is primitive and idiotic and should have been abandoned in 80's, then you'll like Navicat. It is light years better and easier than using WebMin. The interface still needs works, to improve the flow and ergonomics (HI considerations seem to have been forgotten about by most including Apple about a decade ago.), but this is a very useful and rather featured tool. And, so what if you have to pay. Good work deserves compensation. Besides if you use this for business you will have done dozens of things with this before you have even figured out how to install , access, and use WebMin. Additionally, using an application for direct access always blows away any browser access in almost every way shape and form, especially speed, convenience and features. Use your brain, use open source, if it is good, but too much open source stuff will waste years of a professional's life. If you want to get work done, rather than blindly hold on to open source, command line installs, and browser just because it is free, by all means, get Navicat.

I'm a satisfied user of Navicat. Before i purchased Navicat, I also asked them about the upgrade policy and they informed us that their policy has been changed. Now, they offer free bug-fix to those users who report bugs to them. I'm not sure if I would encounter any bugs, but I'm satisfied with their support services and new upgrade policy. thanks macupdate, I'll certainly buy another license at this special price point.

This is indeed the Best MySQL manager out there, just it's automatic backup isa big time saver. $60 for this app is a steal... I would upgrade my v6 if it wasn't for their crap upgrade policy. From their KB: "A license lasts permanently. You are entitlted to free upgrade all the maintenance release of your purchased version within the first year. For instance: If you obtain Navicat 6, you will only entitle to free upgrade to Navicat 6.X.X within the first year of your purchase." You only get a year of upgrade, it's not related to the version # so you could potentially have to pay full price for a bug fix... I'll keep my aging version...

Have been using v6 and v7 beta for a while -- has saved soooo much time over browser-based interfaces. Structure Sync and Data Transfer tools are fantastic. A little gem hidden in there -- the http/https tunneling. Your host doesn't allow remote hosts to access MySQL directly? No problem! Just install the PHP script in a folder on your site (password protect if you like!), and voila! you can admin with this great tool.

A couple people have asked what are the differences between Navicat and CocoaMySQL or SQLGrinder. Not having any experience with any of these applications, but being intrigued with the thought of managing my MySQL databases from a desktop app instead of a browser, I checked each out and can summarize my findings as: 1) CocoaMySQL hasn't had a new release version in 4 years 2) SQLGrinder doesn't work -- at least not at the moment. Using the exact same parameters for it and Navicat, Navicat connected immediately and SQLGrinder reported a "No suitable driver error." I'm on my way to purchase Navicat.

From what I read this sounds real good but they also seem to have a pretty lame upgrade policy (as described in this article: http://www.timflight.com/review-navicat-mysql-client-now-supports-ssh-tunnel/) that appears to still be in effect if I read their website correctly. That pretty much nixes interest for me because you could end up with an unusable version where you don't even have access to a maintenance release.

I tried this awhile back and it was clearly the leader in the category, but too expensive so I slogged on with freebies. Great to see MacUpdate doing more developer/specialized titles like this. Time to get out the credit card (again). I feel like I'm in a monthly club as much as I'm buying from MU these days...
