ZTerm1.1b7

Terminal emulation program.

Overview

Note: ZTerm is no longer under development and the developer provides no support for it.

ZTerm is a terminal emulation program for the Mac. In its day, many people used it to connect to Bulletin Board Systems and download files. Now we have the internet. Its still a useful utility for those systems that only offer dialup connections and for connecting to devices through a serial port, like many routers. For newer Macs that don't have a normal serial port, ZTerm can talk to ports on USB to serial adapters, through the appropriate driver software supplied with the adapter.

What's new in ZTerm

Version 1.1b7 adds the following:
  • Registration is now $20; with disk is now $30 (floppy or CD).
  • Fixed problem where Port selection popup menu only works once and the crash if there are no devices.
  • Fixed several things which could cause a crash during startup.
  • Fixed send of multiple files.
  • Increased some timeouts to see if it fixes dial problem on some systems (when the Response line shows DT NNN-NNNN).
  • Fixed crash when the ZPhoneList file is corrupted.

As the Technical Support Manager of MicroNet, we are always having to keep up with the latest systems and OS's. We have tested ZTerm as a way to control the RAID systems that we sell. We tested our Genesis, RAIDBank and DataDock systems. It works great under OSX (at least the latest desktop and server versions). Our only complaint is the fonts look terrible, and we are having some trouble trying to match the basic ANSI like font used on many peoples firmware.

Here it is almost 4 years since the last review; well, sure the Internet, except for a few exotic functions, has replaced terminal programs, but I predict a resurgence of modems and terminal emulation, once the U.S. Defense Dept. and the corporatocracy implement pending plans that will limit the privacy, scope of and increase the relative cost/benefit of the Internet. As people search for options, it is likely that there will be a resurgence of FidoNet and like alternatives. ZTerm works fine with OS 10.4.5, even to an external USB modem. I'd say it is at least something to keep around (along with a decent modem), you never know when you may need to use it.
