Hook for Mac3.1

13 May 2021

Link and re-access information related to your current focus.

What is Hook for Mac

Searching and filing can take you out of "the zone". With Hook, instantly link and re-access information related to your current focus: be it a document, email, folder or almost anything else on your Mac or elsewhere.

Hook does not replace your favorite apps: it lets you use them together, linking their documents and objects. For example, with Hook you can link a document you are writing (or reading) to a Tinderbox object, a task an outline, a diagram, and feedback, in the compatible app of your choice. Hook lets you instantly navigate between them.

This keeps you focused on doing great work with the information you need, now.

What's new in Hook

Version 3.1:
  • After typing a search string, the status bar now provides a tip for keyboarders: “To select a result, press the Tab key then ↓ key.”
  • If a new version of Hook is launched that has new or updated templates, Hook will now ask you whether you’d like to update your “built-in templates” folder
  • If Hook detects that your templates are out of date, its Preferences > Notes pane will say so. You can dismiss the notice
  • The Hide Hook window automatically General Preference is now enabled by default and for first time upgraders. This tweaks a change introduced in Hook 3.0. In the future, we may add a wizard for first-time users giving the ability to configure this and related settings that are (relatively) specific to Hook.
  • Replaced the built-in MindNode template. Users with a recent version of MindNode may wish to store a newer custom template in their Custom Templates folder
  • If Pinboard integration is disabled, Reveal Page in Pinboard is now hidden
  • Disabling Pinboard service from Hook’s Services Preferences pane now causes its status “light” to go non-green
  • A possible crash.
  • Some typos in the UI
Software integration
  • An issue that interfered with Hook’s context window in some Adobe Acrobat installations. Please note that not all versions of Adobe support deep PDF linking. For optimal integration with Acrobat, use Big Sur and the latest Adobe software
  • NB Hook already supports Eclipse IDE (not previously mentioned in our documentation). If software with which you use Hook is not listed on our linkable apps page, please let us know. Many apps work “out of the box” with Hook given its default integration framework
Documentation updates
  • If you are not seeing the new built-in templates, you can click the “Restore built-in templates” button on Hook’s Preferences > Notes tab
  • The following document illustrates the Hook to New > folder feature, and some of Hook’s other built-in templates: Using Hook & OmniOutliner as a Contact Management System: Link a Contact to Meeting Minutes & More
  • TODOist users may be interested in how Hook Enables You to Connect Todoist to your Work and Life by Rochelle Broder-Singer
  • We have been updating our documentation and producing new videos for Hook, with thanks to Jay Miller and Lee Garrett

Well, not the usuall kind of subscription. You may stop paying the yearly price, but still be able to use that current version without restrictions. It doesn't stop working or get reduced functionality as most other products do. Very pleasant way.

A nice tool to create connections between different resources. When I read a pdf and find a related wikipedia article, I simply use Hook to hook them together. Next time I revisit the pdf I have all the related resources just a click away. The developers are very responsive and provide scripts to work more directly with applications that support scripting. Tinderbox, DEVONthink are supported so that individual items in their databases can be linked to with other resources (any files on my Mac, web pages). Hook does a better job following files around when they get moved or their name changed. Overall a very nice tool. It fills a hole that no other tool can plug.
