Free, secure messaging for the Desktop.

Overview

Signal is fast, simple, secure messaging for the desktop. It now runs independently of your browser, so, if you’re a Firefox or Safari user, you don’t need to install Chrome to send and receive Signal messages on your computer anymore; if you’re a Chrome user, having your browser open will no longer be synonymous with having Signal Desktop open.

Features:
  • Send high-quality group, text, voice, video, document, and picture messages anywhere in the world without SMS or MMS fees.
  • Make crystal-clear voice and video calls to people who live across town, or across the ocean, with no long-distance charges.
  • Signal messages and calls are always end-to-end encrypted and painstakingly engineered to keep your communication safe. We can't read your messages or see your calls, and no one else can either.
  • Keep your chat history tidy with messages that you can set to disappear. Choose different disappearing message intervals for each conversation. Everyone in the thread shares the same setting. Good memories will last even if the words vanish.
  • As an Open Source project supported by grants and donations, Signal can put users first. There are no ads, no affiliate marketers, no creepy tracking. Just open technology for a fast, simple, and secure messaging experience. The way it should be.

What's new in Signal

Version 1.27.2:
  • Brings back the orange highlight on Windows which previously came along with any message notification
  • Fixes a startup issue present on some Linux distributions

Requirements for Signal

  • Intel 64
  • OS X 10.10.0 or later

My buddies and me are already hooked on Keybase (encrypted comms, encrypted git repo, encrypted distributed filesystem both public and private) but I totally support Signal and everything that comes from Open Whisper Systems <3

Although to be fair: this very desktop electron app does not (yet) support voice calls. Feature request for that is here:
https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop/issues/1046

Also v1.25.1 has been released. Please update listing:

Signal v1.17.1 is now available. But no security patch is evident. The developer remains entirely silent about the known security problem. BE CAREFUL. "• We fixed a bug in group conversations that was causing Avatar updates to be delayed. Your move, James Cameron. • The "Download Attachment" menu option should now work for users whose Signal window is extremely narrow."

A beta patch is in the works! Keep an eye out:
-> New Signal privacy feature removes sender ID from metadata
Just-announced beta seals sender details inside encrypted envelope.

*sigh* There is no patch forthcoming. Can I kill this entire thread? Apparently, this 'security error' is a FEATURE not a flaw. I'd say 'never mind', but this remains a potential problem. Happily, there is a workaround! Encrypt your Mac.

Here is the thread discussing the situation over at the Signal Community:
https://community.signalusers.org/t/vulnerabilities/4548/8

From Joshua Lund:
"SQLCipher ships with a good default set of plugins/pragmas, and its performance is excellent because it is built on top of the widely used SQLite database layer.

"The core premise of the [BleepingComputer.com] article is completely mistaken. The database key was never intended to be a secret. At-rest encryption is not something that Signal Desktop is currently trying to provide or has ever claimed to provide. Full-disk encryption can be enabled at the OS level on most desktop platforms."

DANGER! Signal version 1.17.0 was a known security flaw! The developer has been contacted, but there has as yet been no response. Read the article linked below before depending upon Signal for encryption security. Watch for the next update to patch this flaw. Thanks for the alert!
If ever you can launch the app, since 1.15.x versions it does not launch on macOS: no window, no dialog, nothing appears!

I'm not having trouble with v1.17.0 launching. But note that I'm a macOS beta tester on 10.14.1 b5. The usual protocol when this happens is to uninstall the app, including its .plist files, reboot then install again. See if that clears the problem. I also repair my boot drive and dump its user and system cache about once a month as well as they commonly have something or other go corrupt.
