Quake III Arena1.3.2

09 May 2006

3D first-person shoot-em-up game.

Overview

Quake III Arena is an intense new arena for the notorious first-person shoot-em-up game.

Welcome to the Arena, where high-ranking warriors are transformed into spineless mush. Abandoning every ounce of common sense and any trace of doubt, you lunge onto a stage of harrowing landscapes and veiled abysses. Your new environment rejects you with lava pits and atmospheric hazards as legions of foes surround you, testing the gut reaction that brought you here in the first place. Your new mantra: Fight or be finished.

What's new in Quake III Arena

Version 1.3.2:

CVE-2006-2082: directory traversal / information leak in Quake III Arena auto download feature.

  • Ludwig Nussel and Thilo Shulz discovered a vulnerability letting a malicious client download files from a server if auto download is enabled ( sv_allowDownload 1 ).
Issue #2 ( CVE pending ): R_RemapShaders buffer overflow
A second issue fixed in this release would let a malicious server exploit a buffer overflow to execute a shellcode on connecting clients.

Please note that this is NOT an official release from id software. It is from a third party group working from the GPLed source code. It contains audio bugs which are not in the official Mac client and it does not contain PunkBuster support. It really shouldn't be listed as a replacement for id's Quake 3. Also, performance on my Dual 2.5 G5 is horrible.

Wow. Quake III is an aging game, and I am impressed that after all this time they've still released a universal binary. Thanks!

Okay, I'm looking for the OSX version. When I try to install this version it tries to launch Classic. What gives? Is there not a Q3Arena for OSX?

Great port, still works in Tiger. Especially the load times are a LOT faster under OS X. One problem though; it installs a separate Quake 3 folder and intends to get the "pak0.pk3" file from somewhere else. This fails, resulting in crashes at launch, or even the inability to launch the game at all. The remedy is simple: copy the "pak0.pk3" file from the CD or the original Quake 3 folder to the OS X Quake 3 baseq3 folder and trash the preferences file in ~/Library/Preferences if it exists. After that the game runs flawless and fast.

If, like me, you were distraught that the 1.32-Altivec version won't work on your shiny new iMac G5, you can get the "normal" 1.32 version from here: http://www.mirrors.ausmac.net/AusMac/auslist.cgi?location=Games-SW/quake3 just install that and copy the pak0.pkg file from your CD into the right place.

Everything works fine but the system cursor sits in the middle of the screen, quite annoying anybody know how to fix? Mac OS X 10.3.8 / Dual 500mhz G4 / Revolution 7.1 / Logitech MX-1000 Mouse / Logitech Elite Keyboard / 640MB of Ram. / Radeon Mac Edition AGP (Fully Updated Drivers / FIrmware) / Radeon 9200 PCI (Not used for Quake 3) Tried using both the 1.32 Point release and the G4 Altivec Test app both have the cursor problem. I've reinstalled the drivers and also ran without drivers installed and the problem still happens! If the cursor wasn't there it would be perfect!

The application unexpectedly QUIT. It is a panther thing. I own the retail CDs and this software does not work. I can run QUAKEIII in classic only where the sound lags the action by about 30 seconds. It is rubbish that APPLE mention QUAKEIII all the time when IT DOES NOT WORK

Works perfect for me on my g3 350MHz imac with panther 10.3.3.After you open the package and install it just drag the pak0.pk3 from the original quake 3 and put in in the baseq3 folder in the new quake 3 folder and then open the new quake3 or quake 3g4 and when it says select retail installation just select the new quake folder.

unfortunately if I want to use my own config file with custom set of sensitivity and mouseaccel - it slows acceleration of mouse in system preferences! After some whiles of playing - i can see slowness of acceleration inside quake - and when I quit - I have to set up my mouse in system preferences again - everytime - its annoying ...:(

An annoying problem I have is that while using the arrow keys to move around, the up and down keys require you to remove you fingers from the arrow keys. And if you don't you end up looking at the ceiling/floor and unable to get back to the center.

When you type /dedicated 1 in the console it will run a dedicated server but there will be no window. It's buggy still but it serves fine. For some reason the mouse is disabled if Quake 3 is the front most application in the Finder when running in dedicated server mode. To quit the program properly you can command-tab to the Finder on the dock and then control click on the Quake 3 icon in the dock and choose quit from the contextual menu that pops up. I too have had many troubles with the program refusing to start in OS 10.2. Obviously idsoftware is going to need another update on this one.

wierd.... with version 1.32 test 2 the mouse control worked fine till 1.32 test 3 and newer till the final release whereas the mouse is -less- responsive hard to aim/shoot isn't there a console command to fix it? (windows/linux 1.32 does NOT have this problem) only we mac users do....atleast punkbuster works and now the mouse doesn't....ID SOFTWARE: FIX IT ASAP! p.s. im still using 1.31 and i will till the mouse timing/responsiveness nse event or whatever is fixed to its normal state

Runs BEAUTIFULLY! At last it feels a lot more like Quake 3 is "done"! OS X is what Mac gaming was meant to be all along! To play a few OpenGL games consecutively under Classic would eventually mean problems, corrupt memory, and a need to reboot... OS X? Play Quake 1, 2, 3, Alice, SiN Gold, AvP... all one after the other without a hitch or need to reboot! Well back to Quake III... pffft! Many kudos to Graeme and id- can't wait to see what's done for Doom 3 for Mac!

You have to manually install the files. That could be why you guys are having problems. You may not have put all the files in the right places. I was playing on protocol 68 servers last night with Punk Buster enabled and it worked fine. The PB folder goes in your main Quake folder, so does the quake3.app then you open up the baseq3 folder and move all those new files to the baseq3 folder in your main quake folder. Do the same thing with the Missionpack folder. Open it up, move all the new files to the Missionpack folder in your main Quake folder. Finally, this is important, to start up quake, you can't double click on the old "Quake3" app!!! You have to double click the new "quake3.app" file you just installed or you will still be running Point Release 1.31 After double clicking on the new "quake3.app" when quake is launched go the the multiplayer menue and click that. When it brings up all the servers, at the top right you will now see a place to click to enable Punk Buster. Click on that and it will say Punk Buster enabled. Now you should be good to go. My F13, F14 and F15 keys still don't work. And my mouse isn't responding the same. I'm automatically getting mouse acceleration even though I have it disabled. Other than that it's running fine.
