Be aware.... v. 7.9.4 seems to overwrite your Mac Models/notes if you have them. I have kept a record of my old Mac models along with detailed notes on them in the notes section of Mactracker. I had to restore my old app (v7.9.3) and data off TimeMachine from /Library/Containers/com.mactrackerapp.Mactracker in order to restore all my old notes.

The app is not clever at all. After update, the smart categories are gone. Also the update is alway the whole program. They seem not to be able to divide the program into data resource and program resource.

The developer picked a good time to upgrade the app to 64 bit given Apple's pending removal of 32 bit support in the next version of OS X. For anyone having trouble launching Mactracker, check you system compatibility. And just check your system generally. I've been using Mactracker for a very long time and never had such a problem. A isue like that can be the canary in the coal mine, indicating serious issues you may not have noticed before now. That said, I fine Mactracker to be invaluable in my Mac tech support business.

Heads up: if you replace the App Store version with the standalone version (and presumably vice versa) you lose your list of My Models. For both versions, the list is saved in a plist XML file called mactracker.db but in different locations: App Store: ~/Library/Containers/com.mactrackerapp.Mactracker/Data/Library/Application\ Support/com.mactrackerapp.Mactracker/mactracker.db Standalone: ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.mactrackerapp.Mactracker/mactracker.db To restore the list, quit the app, copy the old file to the new location, and reopen the app. Phew!

I will be short. One have one question. Is there any way to make an updater for MT that just updates the database of MT so that PPC users can stay up to date. I have used MT as far back as I can remember and it would be helpful to be able to stay up to date with just a database updater of just the latest Macs and other peripherals. I use it when (if when) I (if) plan to buy a new Mac.

I have used MT since its' inception way back in the classic days. If you try to do a search for this type of genre your list would be very short if at all. The database it has on the Mac is so extensive that it is more of a time capsule. When I worked at CompUSA as the lead Mac seller and some Tech work, I used MT to look up specs. get the RAM type for it, type of ports it has and down it to the model if I was on the phone with a customer. I used it to look at the latest models that were being produced at home but with the authors decided to break away from PPCs I cannot see the latest models. That is why I am requesting if there is any way to just write an update modular that only would update the database and nothing else. I am still not sure what mandated you going from a universal binary to Intel only? There is nothing I can say that is on the negative side although I do find it ironic that from what I read in the comments, there seems to be some bugs that never happened in the PPC version. Since it was released, MT has never had any problems on various Macs I have run it on. I find it ironic that the Intel version is a bit on the buggy side. If you have a PPC make sure you at least have the last version for your Mac. The Leopard version is at the top. End of Line...

I appreciate the developer's effort in periodically updating Mactracker but I don't understand why what is basically a database would need Lion or Cougar to operate? There are a lot of people, myself included, who chose not to "upgrade" from SL because of radical changes in the OS, I cannot imagine that it would be terribly difficult to keep Mactracker compatible with SL.

I have nine currently working macs and none will probably go beyond 10.68. I have quite a few retired macs in the basement going back twenty years, most still work. The software seems to be leaving people who do more than play games and do word processing behind. Have always used Mactracker to track my different computers. I am disappointed in only 10.7 plus being supported.

As I noted earlier about just clicking on the top Icon will play the start-up-sound, if you hold down the option key down you will hear the Death Chimes for the earlier Macs. Ironically whenever I did hear the DC It usually was a SW problem that Diskwarrior could normally fix or even Drive Genius as well. But if you only had 1 boot drive, you would have to boot with the master disk. End of Line...

I do not know how anyone can have complaints about MT. It has been around while some of you were either in diapers or not a speck in your parents eyes. The person who complained about taking the start-up sounds out is wrong. All you have to do is click on the icon on the top and you will get the right sound. There is just no button for it anymore. I go back to the 128 k Mac and MT lets me backtrack and remember the units I had. For me MT is a bit of a Time Machine on the Mac. The original version mainly dealt with the Mac and almost no peripherals. It has really changed since then right down to the interface and look. As time went they added so much to the database. Whoever said it is slow in booting I have to disagree on. I am currently using a G5 2.7 GHz LC Tower and it loads just fine. Since I do not own an Intel Mac I cannot make a comparison to them. But I do know that my Pismo PowerBook runs at 15% of the G5 and it can still do work that others would think impossible. I was not trying go off topic but, if someone asks you... Why Mac, ask them if they know of any PC that ever lasted 14 years and is still running. That will shut them up fast. To this day I have yet to develop one dead pixel. Anyhow, MT is without a doubt the best keeper of the history of the Mac and all peripherals related to it. The learning curve is so easy that a Kid could figure it out. The interface is clean and always has been. There is no other program that does such a complete job as MT. End of Line...

Anyone: The release notes for 6.0.1 says "Adds the ability to create a new "My Models" entry from an info window". How exactly do you do that? I've poked around and don't see a way. What I'm assuming this means is if I find the model I want under the Categories list directly on the left, there would be way once I select it add it to My Models without having to to first do File/New My Model and then search AGAIN for the model I already searched for in the Categories list. Appreciate if someone has figured this out and could pass it on.

If by the 100 meg updates, you mean the OS X point-increment updates (for instance, 10.6.0 to 10.6.1, etc.), Software Update usually looks at your current system version, and presents you with a slimmed-down "delta" updater specific to your system and Mac version. However, many users have found over the years that these delta updaters cause problems that the bigger "Combo" updaters usually don't, and the Combo updater can also fix problems that the delta updaters can't, so sometimes it's better to download and install the big updates. In fact, it seems Apple may have been recognizing this for a while, since Software Update has been presenting delta updaters less and less in the past couple years, favoring Combo updaters for more and more Macs.

There is a crash which occurs in the latest version (5.0.11) which I can consistently reproduce. To my knowledge this only occurs under Snow Leopard (10.6.2). It does not occur on any of my Macs running Tiger (10.4.11). The crash happens under ‘My Models' when adding the Contact from the Address Panel. I have confirmed the crash on both a 1st generation Macbook as well as an Early 2009 Mac Mini, both of which run 10.6.2. However, it works just fine on a Dual 2.7GHz G5, so perhaps this is an Intel-only issue? I absolutely adore Mactracker and have used it for years, which is why I am bringing this to everyone's attention. I'm sure the developer will squash this in no time. I was just wondering if anyone else can reproduce this crash.

This app has been around for what seems like forever, and has always delivered. Very informative, always up to date, always consistent, and always free. Thank you so much dev(s) for the years of support. Keep up the awesome work!

"Mactracker for iPod classic is no longer included." I guess that makes sense, since the latest generations of iPods can't use this feature, but "Boo, Hiss!" anyway.

Isn't there a free developer to give hand to this great freeware and its author? I feel bad when I download 22 MB of data each time when something gets added/updated. Can't be anything like rsync or plain patching (e.g. xdelta) implemented so users actually download 22 mb of data when they really need to replace the executable? I bet the actually changed data is far more less, compare the firefox "check for updates" updating and the old fashion full version downloading if you want to see how big difference patching would make. I mean, even Blizzard does patching and as far as I know, there is no risk patching the data files. Thanks to MPAA/RIAA, P2P doesn't really seem to be an option anymore. I mean evil ISPs out there filtering everything and sending letters to GNU/Linux downloaders. So, if anyone say "or he can ship a torrent", it is not the case. ps: I don't know the author or the company behind it, I just feel bad wasting bandwidth for no reason.

This great app allows you to find out what, when, plus a lot more on Apple Mac, previous Clone Macs, peripherals and devices. New Apple products can get updated into the list, too! Essential in previewing what a certain Mac needs (RAM Type/configuration/etc.) and will be like (Start-up sound, screen resolution, ports, plus much more info), and to compare, check and reference all the vintage and latest Mac computers, peripherals and devices like the iPod family. Definitely worth having around in your own Mac Library. Because even though you may be able to get all of this information online somewhere, it may be scattered over several sites, and maybe you will need to view the library offline, nicely and well. Great history comments also!

Mactracker has been a very valuable tool in determining the product configuration and what software diagnostic versions was meant for the particular vintage. I currently utilize this utility in my everyday Service Provider Service role. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
