I used to love vlc, but after upgrading to 2.1.4, it routinely caused kernel panics. Doing a few searches shows that vlc has had a frequent history of causing kernel panics for many people (50K+ results for vlc+kernel+panic), regardless of os version and vlc version. And the vlc doesn't even care about the problem. Any ticket that reports the problem gets closed with a message saying it's not vlc's problem and apple has to fix it.

This is great for almost any video format , and I like how easy it is to change the aspect ratio of nay video to better suit your tv ( is a macmini connected to my tv). The one problem I have is trying to play some dvd's it doesn't seem to like them so I have to go back to the default dvd player software.

Two days and this Update still doesn't connect through the "Check For Updates" within the Client. Odd.

VLC is indispensable - not only on the Mac but on any platform. The only thing that never worked - at least for me (on Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks) - was the auto-update feature. If I select the check-for-updates menu I always get notified that there is no new version of VLC available even if there actually was a new version just released. Thus I always ended up downloading the new version from here and hope for that version to automatically notify me of an update. Would be great if that will get fixed any time soon. I admit thought that this is quite a minor annoyance compared to the many many benefits this app has.

Agreed that this is one very useful .app. There must be an issue peculiar to your machine Georg-74 as I have used in-app updates for some time now on 10.6.8 MBP i7.

@pedropanza : Thanks for your hint ... I have this issue on two machines - a MBP with 10.6.8 (C2D) and an iMac (i7) with Mavericks and Lion/Mountain Lion earlier.

I don't think there's any problem with updating from within the app, it's just that there (for whatever reason) is a delay until it shows up within the application after a new version has been released. But once it does the auto-update works.

VLC launches iTunes when I open a video file on 10.6.8.

So strange, didn't find anything related to iTunes in the prefs.

Note : Using iTunes 6.0.5. :-)

- "Freebox TV" has yet to come back in the Internet section
- subtitles for tv streams remain visible until the next subtitle comes (I've checked immediately v2.0.8 where they behave like they should, disappearing after a while — for example during a long silent scene)
=> apart from that it's a good move they created a subtitles menu! I really like. ;-)
(just in case: those tests were made under 10.6.8)

Can you still reproduce this issue with VLC 2.0.6 or a 2.1 nightly build?
burypromote
machine156 replied on 22 Apr 2013
yes, I can reproduce this issue with VLC 2.0.6

With VLC 2.0.4 or 2.0.5 (didn't test 2.0.6) on my Mac Mini '06: if you start a video, unpause, skip to the next video, skip around in the time of a video; 1 out of 3 times, sound will stop outputting on SPDIF. So pausing/rewinding a video is basically impossible, I have to quit VLC and reopen to get sound.

My Mac Mini '12 with VLC 2.0.5 or 2.0.6 its more rare, like 1 out of 100 times.

but VLC 2.0.3 doesn't have this issue. VLC 2.0.4-2.0.6 seems to have little audio drop outs as well...

PPC version:
- subtitles for streaming tv doesn't work anymore and closes the video window instead.

- displaying playlists in the main window takes time to update every time I click on an item.

v204 works better, the lag for displaying playlists is gone but video still closes itself when selecting a different audio track or a subtitle.
Maybe fixed in 205? ;-)
