Web Confidential overview

Where do you keep your confidential data? Like most people these days, you've probably got a growing number of user IDs, passwords, registration keys, PIN codes, serial numbers, and the like, stored in various places on your computer or scribbled on miscellaneous pieces of paper around your home or office. When you stop and think about it, you probably have more of these pesky bits of information scattered about than you realize. Web Confidential uses an intuitive, easy-to-use cardfile metaphor which will enable even novice users to get up to speed in no time. Power users will find a large number of options to enable them to configure Web Confidential to meet their specific needs. Web Confidential gives you access to your passwords from within your browser and from the macOS Dock. When you need access to a user ID and password, a handy floating utility window shows all the information you might need about your password. Web Confidential supports AppleScript and can of course also import passwords from other password managers. Last but not least, Web Confidential permits you to encrypt your password files, protecting this sensitive information from prying eyes, using state-of-the-art encryption.

Web Confidential stopped working! I cannot get the start page to come up. Is this the end for Web Confidential and we just didn't get a warning??

Although it's still for sale on the website, I just got email from the Support link (palm@web-confidential.com): "Web Confidential for Palm OS is not available anymore and support has stopped." This was the response when I asked for help when the database had become corrupted in sync between my Palm OS PDA and my Intel mac. Hosed the entire Web Confidential file, all gone. Anyone have an alternative to suggest that will work with both Mac OSX 4.11 and higher AND with Palm OS? And if possible a way to transfer several hundred records without retyping?

Just wanted to add a tip o' the hat to Alco for his long-suffering work on this, and URL Mgr. I've happily used your apps for close on a decade, and they were flawless. Thank you.

After 2.5 years, we get a very minor update, still in PPC. A program that is not a binary in the winter of 08 is totally disqualified, especially when one considers that the competition kept the pace. I was waiting for an iPhone compatible version (as announced on the Web Confidential site), but I assume this may not be here for another few years. This time, I'm going to shop around.

Go back to sleep Alco. After years of neglect this former jewel has lost its sparkle. Anybody serious about passwords is with 1Password these days.

Too little, too late. I used this program for many years and it has been very useful. But its interface weaknesses have not been addressed for years. As a Palm Treo user who also needs a mobile version, there are other apps like SplashID, Yojimbo and 1Password which do the same thing with more modern interfaces and better features. After looking at these carefully, I selected SplashID as the replacement to Web Confidential and it has been a very happy transition. It's unfortunate that it came to this, as just some simple improvements to the application would have kept me in the family.

The developer site states that a new, Universal Binary version will be out this winter. Less than 10 days left before Spring and the temptation is getting really high to move from a software last updated in November 2005 to a more up to date program. Any news, Alco Blom?

This used to be a “must-have application.” However, it has not been updated for a while and definitely needs updating. Not only does it look and feel old, it also is somewhat antiquated in its usability and level of integration with other applications. Written to developer Alco Blom at least twice with no reply. Alco used to fast and reliable in updating his apps... but whatever happened to him, I fear both URL-Manager and Web Confidential are dead in the water. Personally, I have started looking for alternatives such as BareBones’ excellent Yojimbo.

Excellent program (3.7.5), BUT: I've tried the program. I imported large data set and played with it for a while. It was PERFECT till the data file size reached 256K (over 1200 entries with a lot of notes) . The program crashed when trying to save. (using OSX 10.4.2) "Web Confidential .crash.log" reports: Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x7265717d Is 256K the limit on the data file size?????

I've used Web Confidential for a long time, happily. I've tried URL Manager and always ended up deleting it because of instability in other applications -- NOW I realize that was the "Application Enhancer" monster. Oof!duh ... no wonder. But the APE thing is only for a limited few apps, like Safari, which I never use. Thank you for pointing out that Application Enhancer is hidden in there!! Even though I never had used it from WC. It ought to have a skull and crossbones icon on the folder. I"ll go niggle at the Web Confidential site, because I can certainly confirm APE, when I recently tried _only_ the "Application Enhancer" and "Paranoid Android" -- nothing else, just those two items both from th3e APE developer, during the late insecurity unpleasantness, I immediately got unexpected quits in several other apps (TextSoap and AbiWord, for instance, with large cut and pastes). Got rid of APE, got rid of the problems. G3 Pismo, X 10.3.4. So -- a big positive YES it's GOOD for Web Confidential. Beware the APE.

I think some of the recent reviews of this software have been unfair. I suspect some people have missed some of the possibilities Web-Confidential has. For instance you can use different interfaces and the application recently offered a list mode. The most useful features of this application is its integration with web browsers. You can simply used the shared menu to get to a "bookmarked" site and have web-confidential automatically enter your user name and password in the form to allow you to log in. No database-based solution will do that for you. I would suggest that people really take a deeper look at the documentation. This app has great possibilities and it'd be sad to overlook them. I've used it for years and I can't live without it now :-))

I've used Web Confidential now for several years. It gets better with each update and is currently a mature, rock stable application that saves time when logging in or reinstalling software. Printing a backup hard copy is straightfoward. I've tried a number of other programs and settled on WC.

I can't recommend this application to anyone for the following reasons: 1) Lack of TRUE Unicode support No, it's not an issue if you work in single-language environment. But yes, bilingual users have a valid concern with this. 2) Use of Application Enhancer No matter what Unsanity and their fans might claim, it has been a proven fact that it is a source of all sorts of mysterious bugs that are hard to detect. Don't take my word for it. Do some research. Take a chance if you will. You might get lucky. Who knows. But yes, I have had issues with it, and yes, they would tell me it's my fault even if I turn it off and the problem goes away and my Mac runs quicker without it. Absolutely completely sick and tired of playing that whole finger pointing game.... As if Control Panel and Extensions issues under OS 9 wasn't enough fun. (sigh) 3) Shared Menu never worked consistently Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Login/password auto-fill often doesn't work as advertised, hence forcing me to resort to more reliable and straight-forward method: Copy and Paste manually. So much for "integration." Besides, now with improved browser support for auto-fill function and support for Keychain, I don't manually fill in login and password that often anymore without Web Confidential. So, I don't see any point of messing with this app for that matter. 4) It's not simple enough, yet powerful enough If I need a really powerful and comprehensive login/password database, I might as well just design my own in FileMaker or even AppleWorks. URL Manager's "Find" function isn't even robust enough to be called "sufficient." Encryption is a moot point since I can store *any* files in an encrypted disk image and it is more versatile that way. Even keeping a TextEdit file with pages of login/password info is better than this app as far as I am concerned. I wish I had something good to say about this software. Unfortunately I don't. Sorry.....

I am little confused here. I already downloaded v3.6.1 a few months ago. When infos for the version I have and the "new" version are compared, they show exactly the same data: v3.6.1, created 7/21/2003 11:15 AM, modified 7/24/2003 1:52 pm, except for a small difference in size: 2,308,296 bytes for my file and 2,308,208 for the one posted today. What's going on here?
