Apple iMac Firmware4.1.9

25 September 2001

Firmware for slot-loading CD/DVD iMacs.

Overview

Note: Apple iMac Firmware is no longer under development, but is still available for download as a legacy download.

The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with slot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions.

Firmware Update 4.1.9 includes improvements to starting up Mac OS X from the local hard disk, Firewire target disk mode, starting up from the local hard disk, network startup, and system stability. This update also adds support for additional security options which allow the Open Firmware to be password protected.

People report that this firmware update has also freed up their missing RAM slots, which were lost in the last iMac firmware update.

okay i have an imac 333 tray loading running 9.2.2 and macos 10.1.5. i wish to install 10.3 but it won't upgrade. i've checked the firmware upgrade which is 3.0 and all seems to be okay. when i put the 10.3 cd in the drive it goes straight to a grey screen saying apple firmware ok. i then type boot-cd and nothing happens. can someone help please. as i only want to set up this machine purely for email and web.

BE CAREFUL! Applied this update and ran into the same problem as Steve - third party RAM is 'gone'. Used to have 320 MB of RAM, but after this update a 256 MB chip can't be seen. Thanks Apple.

CAUTION! After loading this firmware update on my iMac DV SE (400Mhz), I was no longer able to boot from my VST FireWire HD. Upgrading to 9.2.1, then to 9.2.2 made no difference. I can still mount the FW HD however.

VERY DANGEROUS. This is an update that for many machines makes 3rd party added RAM disapear. Additionally, Apple has told me that it is "our " problem. Very disappointing. Clearly we put faith into things that are recommended by them at Software Control panel and their update pages. Many of us had perfectly smooth running machines. and this has created a myrid of problems, such as non function of Virtual Memory in addition to not recognizing added memory. Apple's suggestion : "buy different memory". Very sad. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS
