ColorDial overview

ColorDial is an easy-to-use color-selection utility, sporting a magnified reticule for picking the exact color you want with the eyedropper tool, colored sliders to help you fine-tune your perfect tint and hue, a color wheel to find your complementary color schemes, and the ability to copy CSS-ready definitions when you're done.

Featuring large and precise 256px wide colored sliders for accurate drilling down until you find that perfect specimen, text entry boxes for entering direct coordinates in multiple formats, css ready definitions to copy and paste, a handy color wheel to rapidly select complementary colors for your scheme, and a retina scale, sub-pixel capable reticle for sniping that elusive RGB value right off your monitor.

What’s new in version 1.6

Updated on Dec 14 2015

Version 1.6:
  • The close on minimize feature has been removed by request.
  • The RGB and HSL text boxes are now parsed for input values when they have been entered.
  • Drag and drop all the color swatches from ColorDial to any application that will accept dropped colors.
  • Added a new 14-color history swatch set over on the right side of the main window which recalls the last colors picked or have added from the color dial.
  • You can now hold down the command (⌘) key when picking to enter continuous picking mode.
  • Introduces proper HSL support, allowing us to perform lighten / darken / saturate / desaturate operations.
  • The center 4 color buttons have been converted from Saturation/Value to Saturation/Lightness.
  • Color picker shows a magnified reticule and previews the hex color code in the main app while hovering.
  • Getting to the pixels between the pixels on your shiny retina screen is a big deal, and you'll love the new non-blurry linearly scaled sampling reticule sported in this new version.

I like this! Yes, I know there are a zillion colour pickers available, so why did I pick ColorDial? It's free, it's easy to use, the window remains open so I can park it to the side and refer to it as needed, and I really like the complementary colours feature. I'm using it mostly with Lightroom, which doesn't indicate the RGB colour of a selected point (unless I enable soft-proofing). ColorDial also helps me decide on complementary colours when I use Lightroom's split toning feature. My only complaint is that after I pick a colour, the eyedropper is deactivated, and I have to move my mouse back to the ColorDial window to grab the eyedropper again. It would be nice if there was an option to keep the eyedropper active until I deactivate it, so that I could quickly sample a series of colours.
