This is officially an awesome utility. Mail sorely needs a menubar status icon, and Mail Menu Extension fills that need. The new version allows me to limit the display of new messages to inboxes only, which was the feature I needed. So far it's worked flawlessly, and at the price of free it's a fantastic deal. The only improvement I'd still like to see is an option for a blue status colour, not just red.

The (friendly) developer has already updated his software to v1.6 to work with Mavericks OS 10.9.2.

Works like a charm!

Can someone explain me how this software should work? It says without opening Mail, but it works only if I open Mail…

I like it a lot. The only thing stopping me from using it is that it counts messages in all folders in my mail accounts, rather than just counting messages in the inboxes. I contacted the dev, who said that an option to limit the message count to inboxes is in the works.

I tried that. Under "Mode" it shows All Mailboxes, and everything is grated out so that when I try to click the little triangles at the right side to change the Mode, nothing happens.

I contacted the dev, who said to wait for the next update for this functionality to be enabled. He described Mail menu as a "work in progress."

As Mail Unread is being updated I gave this a try and it's great!
