Hi Selvaraju,

unfortunately, pausing and resuming downloads would require us to ditch 10.8 support and it still doesn't have to work since many download links are time-stamped, meaning that resuming them e.g. the next day wouldn't work since the link would have been expired by then. Stay asured, however, that I'm working on this and it is a planned feature, just not likely to come in the following few months.

Thanks Charlie,
Yes, you are correct. Youtube and many services allows to resume within 12/24 hours. When I pasted 5 links means, If one got failed then I reload that failed link, then It continuously fails all other links. We will be happy if we have a button "start/stop" (not resume necessary), we will start/stop our downloader later whenever we want. Countries in Asia has very average internet bandwidth.

Hi Selvaraju,

Actually YouTube's timeout on links is closer to 15-30 minutes. I am currently thinking about some ability to resume the partially downloaded videos, but it needs some major testing since even a slightest difference in the video (the online videos often change since they get recoded, etc) results in an unplayable video.

If you'd like to discuss it further, I'm more than glad to talk to you about this, though I don't think here is the right place. Feel free to write me an email, though - from Downie, under the Support button, select "Other Support..." which will compose a new email for you in your Mail client.

Cheers,

Krystof

Of all the downloaders/ movie extractors available I tried most of them and I find this one to be the best. I use it frequently, not just for youtube but sometimes for really obscure video sources and it never fails. It just does the job, end of story. Well done!

Downie is what I call an “ALIVE” application. It keeps getting better day in day out and more and more video formats are added to its list. It might look like a one-trick pony at first try but its developer is committed to ride it skillfully and in my opinion he’s really doing a great job. ;-) Highly recommended. Great video downloader. I emailed the developer about a site that Downie couldn't access the video and he had it added the very next day (today in v1.4.4). That's customer support above and beyond. A bargain at only $9.99!

As the owner of an old iMac I regret that I can’t install Downie on my computer. I’m still stuck with OS 10.7.5 and the minimal System for Downie is 10.8. However, I’ve seen this gorgeous application in action on many other Macs and know that its developer is moving heaven and earth to keep it updated for many sites and continuously adds new ones. I use other video downloaders that haven’t all the potentiality of Downie and can’t tackle with the new video formats as Downie does. I do hope to buy a new Mac one of these fine days and give Downie a go to work wonders for me as well. Until then I’ll be following closely and enthusiastically its further development on MacUpdate. Hi Fariborz,

sorry to hear that you cannot run Downie on your computer! Unfortunately, for a developer, keeping backword compatibility with older systems means spending quite some extra time for a potentially very small number of users.

I'm really sorry, but 10.8 is the oldest OS I can support.

Hello Krystof, for the time being I installed it on my Mac in office that runs Mavericks. When I buy my own Mac I'll promptly transfer my license onto it. It works great and I'm very pleased with it. Cheers.

When it comes to downloading REDACTED videos, you have a choice between a number of browser extensions, or Downie. The browser extensions tend to break, about once a month when "big corporation" changes things, and then you have to wait for an update.

With Downie this is not the case, and in addition you have a support of at least 220 other video sites that are not supported by those browser extensions.

On top of all this, the developer is very responsive to new feature requests as well as bug reports.

Here's a useful example: about a week ago I emailed Charlie with a feature request. I wanted him to support the terminal command open so that I can script Downie to download when I was away from my Mac.

He added the feature quite quickly and now I can use Otto's Remote plus Automator: On my iPhone, over 3G, I push a copy of the video URL using Otto, straight to Downie on my Mac at home.

When I get home, I have a 720p video waiting to be watched on the sofa.

For those of you who want to try this, I tweeted be appropriate Automator command. Here it is:

https://twitter.com/leoofborg/status/434659681101811713

And did I mention that Downie also supports at least 220 other video services? Five stars. Uncle Leo says check it out.

As an addendum, check out the Browser Extensions, which also work VERY well... You get a nice "D" button in your browser toolbar that will parse ANY of the supported websites.

Downie really wants to become the 1Password of offline video. It deserves to become so.

"When I get home, I have a 720p video waiting to be watched on the sofa."

So this Automator routine actually produces a DVD and tosses it over to your sofa? Now THAT'S amazing. :-) :-)

Seriously, thanks for the informative review above. I too have Downie and find it to be indispensable for quickly acquiring and saving videos off the web. Your Safari has a "D" in its toolbar? My Downie icon looks like a bed (or maybe your sofa!).

Plug for Charlie's other fantastic app: Rottenwood, a simple and handy way to catalog your DVD collection.
