Nimble Commander Pro overview

Nimble Commander Pro (was Files Pro) is a modern file manager designed specifically for Mac computers. It is built with efficiency in mind, providing blazing performance and immediate user-interface feedback. On other hand, Files exploits the classic dual-pane ideology and traditional hotkeys layout, while maintaining a clean, minimalist UI design.

Features:
  • Classic dual-pane interface: Files delivers full keyboard access with the fastest way to handle file-management tasks.
  • Efficiency: Files starts almost instantly. It has a small memory footprint and it works blazingly fast.
  • Uninterrupted experience: Most of Files' work is done in the background, allowing users to focus on their tasks without unnecessary interruptions.
  • Built-in file-attributes editor and file viewer with textual/hexadecimal presentation.
  • External editors integration, including native apps and terminal ones.
  • Searching for files with file mask, filtering by file size and containing text.
  • Archives building and browsing them as regular folders.
  • Built-in terminal emulator.

Very configurable, geeky, taylored to power users. If you like command line and fiddling, this is for you. If you are looking for something like the Finder but with a dual-pane interface and other features, it is not.

Using Nimble Commander for over a year now. Of all the Finder replacements Nimble Commander Pro is te one I like best. It is very fast, very stable and a pleasure to use. One of the best if not the best file manager you can buy.

New update seems more stable, even a little faster, and judging from the support forum discussions, new functionality will keep on coming. Love this file manager. Every time I return to the Finder it's a big yuk. ;) NOTE FOR FUTURE USERS: you need to buy a Pro license from the magnumbytes store, i.e. do not buy the app on the Mac App Store, the reason in the latter case being sandboxing and restricted functionality, no admin mode etc.

I rely on NC every day, at work and at home, since over 2 years. Like most users who look for a dual panel file manager, I came from the Windows world and used Total Commander for a long time. Before discovering NC, I tried PathFinder, Commander One, CRAX and others. They feel sluggish, have a bloated UI and just don't feel like a true TC replacement. NC is easily the closest thing to TC on the Mac. The program is constantly updated, the author is really dedicated and responsive and there is a steadily growing community on the support forum. If you are looking for a true TC replacement on the Mac, try out NC.

I think it is the best file manager for keyboard fans like me. By using this app, you can easily execute any file operation smoothly without leaving the keyboard at tremendous speed. It also includes lots of powerful tools and function under a simple interface. And it is very customizable, I can add my own tools, pin my favorite apps to toolbar, choose my own editor and many many more. So, It is my favorite file manager by far, highly recommended.

By far the best of the orthodox file managers for macOS: fast, snappy browsing, lots of power user functionality, Services integration in the contextual menu, huge amount of keyboard shortcuts for all those functions, many ways to configure it yourself etc. I tested many others, and they are either still too close to the Finder (incl. lots of bloat) like PathFinder, comparably little functionality like Commander One, buggy prereleases like FastCommander and Newton Commander, and ugly GUIs like DoubleCommander. Sure, some of the above have functions that would be nice to have in Nimble Commander, like the sidebar in DoubleCommander, but the overall file managing experience is best in Nimble Commander. As for speed, nothing can beat Rixstep Xfile, but it has too little functionality; FastCommander has nice browsing speed too, but it isn't quite there yet. I'm not giving Nimble Commander the full 5 stars, because there is still lots of room for improvement, e.g. archiving support for formats other than just zip, built-in SMB, AFP and NFS support etc., but even in it's current stage Nimble Commander (to me) is the best one out there.

BEWARE! ATTENTION! This is NOT FREE! It's 25 Bucks after a trial period. In the MAS is a free version called Files Lite. The GUI does not integrate the Finder, what makes extra activities necessary to navigate.

Files has really come to my rescue since Finder no longer works per my post 'Finder not able to view folders and files on EHD after updating to OS X 10.9.4' which I posted at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6444846. The current view is fine as a start, but it would be great if there was a column view like in Finder, but all and all Files seems to be really fast and gets the job done quite easily considering it is an alpha release and I look forward to future releases from beta through production.

Just be aware that by using an alpha or beta software you are essentially testing the product for free, especially if you are reporting issues or bugs. I have found that more often than not, published alpha or beta version offered for free turn into pay versions of the product when released and that 'tester's are rarely offered the product complimentary or free as a 'thank you' for their testing efforts. This is why I no longer use alpha or beta versions of a product unless the developer states in advance that the product will be free when the final version is released, or the testers will be offered the product either complimentary or at a substantial discount. This is because I believe that testing a product adds value and that my time and efforts have value as well.

A cryout of the classical Norton Commander for MS-DOS, a must for those times. That famous app had its earlier cryouts for Linux and some attempt for MAC OS X. Let us see whether its author wishes to promote something really useful and logical.

Well it reminds me of Norton Command. Which was the same but for DOS. In those days it was a great utility because you could open more then one window. Nowadays it is plain easy to open two or more Finder windows and do the same. Basically this app is not really needed unless some innovative stuff will be added (read: things that the Finder cannot do). For now 3 stars but I will keep an eye in this.
