Phenomenal Utility. Does it's job fantastically well. Stable. Doesnt adversely effect your system in any way. I personally find it essential and now that I use it I cannot imagine using my mac without it. Huge productivity gain. Support this utility and the developer. This is quality software, far better than the competition (which I have tested) and well worth the price. I bought 2 licenses so I can use it on 4 machines.

WARNING: The RGB World website has, by all appearances, been HACKED. I've attempted to contact them twice by two different methods and nothing has changed.

1) There is no longer any Help of any kind, apart from the meagre FAQ. All documentation has been removed and replaced with BAD ADS, most specifically for MacKeeper, a very ill omen indeed. (I'll skip the details of why).

2) Their Forum is stagnant. Nothing has been posted there, or rather nothing has been *able* to have been posted there since June! I've tried.

Summary: BEWARE their website. I have no idea if this affects their purchasing system, but it makes me worry that money sent is going to whomever hacked the place.

If the developer is reading this: You have major problems to clean up. Your reputation is on the line.

Cannot see any of the ads you mention or any other sign of being hacked there. Ads from MacKeeper usually come from a infected Mac/browser on the visitor side. Did you check your system?

Sorry Awado, but you didn't look very hard. There is a variety of ads that have replaced the Help, including MacKeeper. Everything I stated remains as I stated it. I check every day. And no, this has nothing to do with my Mac. Relevant pages: (1) WindowMizer Help Book, aka the 'Help' page for WindowMizer: https://www.rgbworld.com/helpbook (2) The stagnant since June RGB World Forum: https://www.rgbworld.com/forums/ - - It is impossible to post anything at all to the forums. Try it. - - In future, please don't waste my time if you're not willing to do your own actual research to verify mine.

First off, this app is $24.95 OR $8 per year subscription. Second, the app is still buggy and doesn't operate as clean & easily as the old "Haxie" or the original feature did. For those wondering what's changed in the latest updates: Version 5.0.5 Sun, 16 June 2019 20:08:24 -0500 Fixed issue with Event Tap port. Fixed compatibility with FreeChat and WhatsApp. Fixed compatibility with Adobe After Effects and Premier. Added: Floating window options (global & app-specific). Version 5.0.4 Sun, 09 June 2019 01:37:12 -0500 Hardened runtime for macOS 10.14.5. Notarized by Apple notary service. Rewrite distribution script to auto-notarize. Updated: Japanese localization. Prepare for discontinuation of DevMateKit. Added: Microsoft AppCenter frameworks to start replacement of DevMateKit.

To be fair to Chris, he's been ironing out loads of the bugs in the past month, with the 4 updates, so give the guy his due.

The programming of OSX has changed a LOT since Unsanity's days, and they didn't have the balls to stick around and update anything after Snow Leopard, so no point comparing to those vaporware peddlers (that I'd certainly invested in and they took all our money).

The speed and capability of Windowmizer has increased a load over the past 2-3 years to be as close to Unsanity's WindowShade X, and Apple's original OS9 WindowShade feature.

I for one am VERY glad of its existence.

Updating to v5.0.4 from within the app resulted in it AGAIN asking for approval to run with Accessibility permissions: System Preferences/Security & Privacy/Privacy/Accessibility/WindowMizer. It was already checked ON. Unchecking it and Rechecking it only lead to repeated BOMBs of the app. Reboot, THEN set the Accessibility permissions, solved the problem.

Used to work wonderfully, but cannot "convince" 4.4.2 to run under Mojave 10.14.5: Keeps asking permission to control under privacy (system prefs), even though it's already granted!
No way I'll "upgrade" to 5... when the iteration I've already paid for is non-functional!?

Look further down the thread for further discussion. Short version: I never had any trouble running v4.4.2 on macOS 10.14.5. But I had applied the "WindowMizer v4.4 AccessibilityPatch.app". That apparently makes all the difference. ASK the developer for it, if you can't find it on the website. I have a copy, but the developer is the distributor.

So any progress on upgrade vs re-purchase? the price for 5.x has gone through the roof compared to past costs/upgrades. I *might* be interested in an upgrade from my 4.x licence but not paying USD25 (AUD$40). And I don't *ever* do subscription software!

I'm sorry but I don't understand your point. I'm using version 4.4.2 successfully on macOS Mojave. I've never received a nag or even notification that version 5 was available. At this point, I'm going to ignore that version 5 exists.

Meanwhile, I've written to the developer in an attempt to sort out if there are any actual upgrade options, as opposed to being forced to buy WindowMizer from scratch all over again as standalone. THAT I find distressing.

The RGB Website says that v5 is an $8 paid UPGRADE (essentially a repurchase, as there is no discount for those who have bought previous versions.) This is NOT TRUE. It is now a paid SUBSCRIPTION, which means that they will be after you for another $8 EVERY YEAR.! A single $8 is not unreasonable for a one-trick pony, but every year???? Not gonna happen!

Under purchase options, it clearly offers a standalone, one-time purchase for $24.95.

The yearly license fee is another option. But you're not forced into a yearly fee if you don't want it.

Indeed there is that option, but it could turn into an even more expensive gamble. The standalone option only applies to WM 5.x versions. New versions of MacOS come out roughly every year. If WM 5 works under the new versions of MacOS for the next three years, I could save a bit of money. But what if WM bricks under MacOS 10.15? Oh, fixing that will require WM 6! Another $24.95 please. Like I said before, not gonna happen! (I fished my registered WM 4.4.2 out of Time Machine and will continue to use that for as long as it works.)

According to all my receipts from RBG World, the developer, an "upgrade" means you buy the next version at a discount. It does NOT NOT NOT mean you have to buy WindowMizer again from scratch for standalone. IOW: I have no idea why there isn't any actual upgrade price for WindowMizer.

I've written the developer in an attempt to figure out what's going on. Seeing as I have version 4.4.2 working perfectly on macOS Mojave, I see no reason to buy WindowMizer all over again at $24.95 just to have version 5.x.

And note that I don't do software subscriptions.

I have used WindowMizer for many years and love it, mostly. Lots of problems using v4 with Mojave, but v5 works great for me. Only criticism I have is that when I double-click on a window's title bar it shrinks fine to just show the title bar----buttttttt I am now switched to the WindowMizer app and have to click somewhere else on the desktop to get out of WindowMizer being the current active app. When I double-click on the title bar of, say, a Safari window and it shrinks to just the title bar I should still be in the Safari app, not switched to WindowMizer. Please fix!!

WM 4.4.2 def not working under Mojave (MB Pro) - rolls up windows but unable roll down/restore. WM 5 pricing is lunacy - USD$8/year subscription or USD$25 for standalone licence!!!!!!!! What the ... Previous minor 0.x upgrades were USD$3, and major upgrades were USD$5, so to ask $25 for upgrade WM 4 to WM 5 is beyond a joke. Nothing on RGB web page about discount for upgrades from prev versions and considerations of registered users. Just red text statement that Wm 4 to Wm 5 is a paid upgrade. Nothing in User Forums, search of their page for 'upgrade' fails to return anything, so clearly no interest in looking after their existing customer base... Absolute appalling treatment of loyal customers. No option for existing users to upgrade at discount, so bye bye WM - great product but shocking treatment of your supporters/users.

I have no idea what you're talking about. At this point, I see zero need to upgrade to v5. - - Try the usual methods to get it working again, including thoroughly UNinstalling it, reboot, REinstall. Also try a repair of your system, booting from the repair partition (Command-R at boot).

I should note that the developer let me download "WindowMizerAccessibilityPatch.app" back in 2016 when I had problems with WindowMizer. It's an AppleScript app that properly sets up the Accessibility System Preferences to work with v4.4 of WindowMizer. Could this be why I have no troubles with v4.4.2 on Mojave? Write the developer and ask for a copy to run on your MBP. It may solve the situation, for all I know.

Now we are told Window Mizer will release version 5 with new coding system, and will move to a subscription base, as though it was adobe photoshop. There is a standalone price but this does not include major updates. I know I complain about utilities not being developed but this is ridiculous. I think Id rather go without.

A brand new version of WindowMizer (v 5.0) is coming soon (1 month). It is completely rewritten in Swift and will support macOS version 10.12 and higher. The current version 4.4.2 does run on High Sierra although I have had several reports of crashes. So, version 4.4.x will be for OS versions 10.6 - 10.11 and version 5 will cover 10.12 and higher.

This type of utility always gets abandoned at the end, and it looks to me like WindowMizer is not an exception. I bought a license, but now I regret since I've already uninstalled it. It turned out to be not so useful/necessary after all, plus some annoyances and bugs. Plus, when you get used to using something like this too much, you feel completely lost when you have to work on another Mac without it. Furthermore, all the milliseconds you think you might be saving is entirely erased almost instantly once you have to troubleshoot for high CPU usage, things not working right, etc. Unlike general stand-alone apps, this type of utility is hard to make it stable and reliable, because it has to handle a huge variety of scenarios system-wide with a bunch of other apps. macOS's default Mission Control works just fine. I used to think it was useful in the past, but I found it rather unnecessary once I learned to use all macOS default features effectively.

No offense taken. I need the feedback in order to make improvements.

The accessibility issue only exists when upgrading from a version prior to 4.4. It does not affect fresh installation of 4.4.

If I could fix it with an update, I would certainly do so. Unfortunately because the bug is technically in all versions prior to v4.4, it has to be fixed on your system using the "WindowMizerAccessibilityPatch.app.zip" downloadable from RGB World forums.

It only takes a moment and the only thing the patch does is remove an erroneous entry in the Accessibility database. I provided the patch app so users do not need to enter any terminal commands.

I did contact Apple regarding the issue and they were unable to provide any assistance, so the patch is the only way I can come up with to fix the Accessibility issue.

I think I know what you are saying – namely, the Dock icons of any open apps do not respond to a single mouse click. Instead, you have to double click. However, if the app is not running then the icon responds to a single click, as it should. This seems to be a bug in 4.4, although not a show-stopper. I will report it to the developer.

Major probs installing new 4.4 Naturally, the app seeks permission in System Preferences, to access control of Mac through ACCESSIBILITY FEATURE. But it's icon is already there and permission is checked to give permission, from older version (s). No matter how many times I played with this, the app would not function. I tried to reinstall the older version of 4.3. Same thing. I have the program in the APPLICATIONS FOLDER, not in any sub-folder. Have fixed permissions, restarted, etc. Now no version of this app will install properly, and it is useless. Please advise if you're having same problems. I'm running 10.9.5 TIA –– Annie

Hi Annie and everyone else. Yes this update was a major disaster with regard to Accessibility authorization. I apologize for the troubles that everyone has had.

I have posted a patch in the User Forums at rgbworld.com with an explanation of the problem. The "bug" is technically in previous versions of WindowMizer (not v 4.4).

In the forum post there is a link to a tiny applescript application that basically removes the duplicate entry from the Accessibility database. I wrote the mini-patch so that users do not have to enter any terminal commands.

Download the patch. Unzip the file and double-click the "WindowMizerAccessibilityPatch.app". It will launch and ask for your password, then it will quit. It does not seem to do anything, but now when you launch the app, you should be able to to enable the checkbox next to WindowMizer thus granting it access to control other application's windows.

If anyone has any problems, either leave a message in the User Forums at the RGB World website, or use the contact form to send me an email directly. I will reply as soon as possible.

Thanks for everyone's patience and assistance.

This app brings back WindowShading, a UX innovation Apple has needlessly ditched and neglected when they introduced Mac OS X. If you've never heard of WindowShading, you are missing out a big time. Minimizing windows in place makes it easier to remember where you left off. No more scrubbing over the Dock to find the window you are looking for.

One thing i don't like or don't know how to make it work, is that when you have a window that has been collapsed, and for example Safari is now over it, if you go to the dock and click that window behind, it doesn't come in front... you have to move the front window and then reclick the collapsed one to appear again. :-(

I believe that this now works as you expected, but this is what also causes the single-click to *not* create a new window when clicking the dock icon. I will review this again.

Having problems with WM 431 (847) under El Crapitan rolls up window to leave title bar as per normal operations, but then restore creates new window of the same folder rather than restoring windowmised folder. So I end up with title bar of folder that was windowmised and a second window of the same folder unrolled. Does that make sense? any thoughts on how to fix this? thanks

WindowMizer version 4.3.x works on OS 10.6 through 10.11. I am currently running OS X 10.11 GM Candidate on 3 separate computers and WindowMizer is working on them all.

The 14-day demo will give you a chance to try it before committing to a purchase.

Chris, can you please explain in more detail what "off-screen window handling" is. How is it better than the other option "Minimize to Dock"? Does it simply move collapsed windows to another space, instead of to the Dock? Thanks!

Ah, I see what it is doing. Just like Deskovery, it is moving the collapsed window to the lower right portion of my screen, so that I can just see a very tiny sliver of the top left corner of the collapsed window.

I don't know what the advantage of doing that is, as opposed to minimizing to the Dock, but to be honest, that is one of the things which I did NOT like about Deskovery.

By minimizing to the Dock, I can quickly determine, for example, which BBEdit docs I have opened -- I usually have a lot of them open -- and quickly reopen any one of them without any effort.

I guess I just find having that tiny sliver on the bottom right corner of my screen graphically annoying. Others may feel differently.

Hi WW, You have it exactly correct. The "Move-Offscreen" window handling sends the original window to the lower-right corner of the screen, whereas "Minimize to Dock" stores the original window in the dock – as it has done in all previous versions of WindowMizer.

The advantage of "Move-Offscreen" is that it is 3x faster than sending the original window to the dock, unfortunately, it does leave a sliver of the window visible. Personally, that is one of the things I didn't like about Deskovery as well, however being that "Move Off-Screen" is soooo much faster, I wanted to offer users the choice.

The "Move Off-Screen" method brings a whole new set of issues that I am working to resolve, but the only way for me to work them out is to move forward with the option.

If anyone has issues, you can always revert to the old behavior by changing the preference on the Advanced panel back to "Minimize to Dock", but unfortunately it is impossible to speed-up that option, except by disabling "Hide System Window Animations", in which case you will see the window animation as the window traverses to the dock.

The WindowMizer help book may help explain the settings in detail.

For those of you who may be wondering which is better, Deskovery or WindowMizer, since yesterday, I have checked out both apps and would like to offer my two cents worth.

Due to a variety of issues I was having with the previous build of WindowMizer -- 4.2.1 -- I had a much more positive experience when using the Deskovery demo. In fact, I was seriously contemplating whether or not I should fork over $20 and purchase it. After all, all I really wanted was the WindowShade effect, and none of the other bells and whistles that Deskovery offers, so paying $20 seemed kind of steep just to gain that one function on my machine.

However, today Chris released a new build of WindowMizer -- 4.3.0 -- and I am happy to say that except for one connection issue -- which Chris is already aware of -- WindowMizer worked flawlessly with 29 of the 30 apps that I tried with it. The only app which would not scroll up WindowShade style, was Hear 1.2.4 (1151.95.16). I am not sure why that is.

At any rate, if your primary interest is in restoring the long lost WindowShade effect to your computer -- along with its sound effects, window transparency option, etc., then I encourage you to consider purchasing WindowMizer. At its new low price of $8.99, I think that it is a pretty fair deal.

Of course, us long-time Mac users have been wondering for years now why Apple hasn't found it in its heart to restore this cool feature to Mac OS X. It shouldn't require a third party app to scroll up our windows, but thanks Chris for making the WindowShade effect available to us once again. :)

Oh, BTW, I am currently running the GM Candidate of El Capitan.

@Leesa: I really can't make a comparison, Leesa, because this is the first working version that I have installed on my machine.

There are so many variables which may possibly affect the app's speed. For example, I am running the El Capitan GM Candidate, which itself adds some snappiness to the OS. El Capitan is proving to be very solid; at least in my case.

WindowMizer's performance on your machine may possibly also be affected by other apps or system tweaks which you may have installed. Maybe something isn't playing nice with WindowMizer.

I would also venture to guess that WindowMizer's speed may possibly also be affected by the particular app which you are trying to roll up/collapse. In my case, I only notice a very small delay between when I double-click the title bar, and when the window rolls up. Some apps may not work with WindowMizer at all. For example, as I noted in my previous comment, the Hear app will not collapse at all, despite multiple attempts to do so on my part. But that is probably a ProSoft Engineering issue.

How is your machine's memory? Is it possibly fragmented due to opening and closing a lot of apps? That could also be another factor. I would suggest rebooting your machine, and then seeing if you get any better performance out of 4.3.

If there really is some other problem, in my experience with working with Chris via email over the past few days, he has proven himself to be very attentive to user feedback and issues related to WindowMizer.

Great app. As someone using a fairly old Mac, I especially appreciate the big performance increases in recent updates. One feature request though. I often double click on address or search fields in apps that put them where the title bar normally is - for example, Spotify and Safari. I do this when the app is in the background, because the first click just brings the app into the foreground and a second click is needed to select the text. All too often WindowMizer intercepts this double click and collapses the window. Perhaps there is a way that you could detect whether any text has been selected before collapsing a window? Or otherwise, check if there is a text field near the cursor.

Yes, enterprising, very few others are attempting to minimize to titlebar but there are many Mac users that would love to have this feature back. I don't get you criticizing a developer for developing an application that is desired by the Mac community.

Is this the same developer that developed WindowShade? Not that it matters because I am sure whom ever the developer, he/she has thousands of hours of time developing this application and deserves compensation for all that time spent. I personally think $15 is fair for all the work involved in developing this application of this type. I am sure if it was so easy to develop, many other developers would have developed a similar product, yet that is not the case. There are very few app's that minimize to the titlebar. There are many that change size and location but few that minimize to titlebar.

@Donperreault
I am NOT the developer of the old WindowShade haxie. I have always loved the minimize to titlebar feature – first when it was part of the OS and later via WindowShade X. I decided I missed the functionality so much that I would re-implement it myself. When I decided to tackle WindowShading (about 3 years ago), I never fathomed that it would take so much time to implement a feature that seems so simple. As it turns out, it is very difficult to manipulate windows in other applications.

I (like many others) think that the windowshading feature should be built into the OS, but it isn't, so this is a best attempt to resurrect window-shading on Mac OS X. I find window-shading to be the single most productivity enhancement tool in my arsenal and WindowMizer gets installed on every Mac I have to work on. WindowMizer has its shortcomings, but I am continually trying to make it better. $15 seems expensive, but it barely covers the cost of maintaining and developing WindowMizer. In fact it probably costs me money, so it's a good thing I have a day job :-)

Anyways if I ever hit a break-even point, I will lower the price. I have been tempted to lower the price to $5, but I would need to sell 3x as many licenses and I don't know if that would happen.

Thanks for encouragement!

Sir, I am not complaining about the price, I was defending the price. I used to write shareware and know the time that is involved in writing software. The comment I was commenting on made it sound like (the developer) you were the developer of WindowShade and therefore were taking advantage of the user. This just is misunderstanding, I think that WindowMizer is reasonably priced for what it does. I already am a registered user who upgraded from an earlier version.

Keep up the great work...

I'd be the first to agree that a software developer deserves compensation for the talent and effort it takes to produce a program. But pricing is a difficult art, no matter how useful an application might be. Perceived value doesn't always equate to effort needed to produce a product. I hope you get the support you need to get your product on the desktops of those who want it.

Looks nice and seems a good replacement for our old window shade. But in Demomode ist works only 20 minutes and than it quits (as announced). But for a real testing that's very annoying. In the moment it doesn't run most time of the day because I'm to lazy to restart it every 20 minutes... And so on it's not possible to detect any (bad) side effects on my daily work. A better strategy is in my opinion to remember one an hour that it is unregistered an after a week the test period will be over. So until now only 2,5 stars, if the Demomode works better it would get 4 stars and I'm pretty shure that if it really does it's job and I own it than it will get the 5th star immediately

I really like having the ability to window-shade App windows on my desktop. It's nostalgic and for me at least... productive. It works, if you're one of this 'visual' and don't mind 'mess' kind of people. And I made the purchase, after seeing 'WindowMizer' on sale recently. Like those crafty 'Haxies' of old, I feel that system tweaks like this - should be only a few bucks. Five tops - An impulse buy... ( lower price, sell more) Yes, it's fully featured, but essentially... it turns an open window into a single title bar. That's surely not fifteen dollars? My gripes, that this latest version ( 4.1 ) doesn't completely collapse Finder windows anymore. I have the 'Path bar' 'Tab bar' and 'toolbar' all showing on window-shading?
Lastly, I would like mail.app's title bar to update as new mail arrives. At the moment, it just goes dormant when window-shaded. If it did this... it would be incredibly useful, and you might actually be able to call WindowMizer an application.

It's a useful utility, especially if you remember it from years gone by. OS8/9 and then those pesky Haxies. Definitely worth a try, to see if it improves your work flow or... all that desktop clutter, drives you mad. As Apple's user interface team decided - many moons ago.

To have Mail.app's window update, you have to add the app to WM Application-specific preferences and assign the "Default" script. Complete details can be viewed in the RGB World User forums:

http://www.rgbworld.com/forum/read?forum_path=9&forum_post_id=63

Regarding price, it takes an unbelievable amount of time to keep WM running across 5 OS's and to work with hundreds of apps because they all behave a little differently. If things settle down I will consider lowering the price, but at this point WM prevents me from pursuing other apps. Also, the price is for 2 macs.

WindowMizer is one of those utilities that I just can't rave about. It isn't exciting. What it is though, is an extremely useful utility that does what it was designed to do and does it very well. What I would like to see in a future version is to have it removed from the dock and only displayed in the menu bar. I see no need to have it displayed in both places. Since it essentially works invisibly in the background, it really has no need to take up dock realestate. All in all, I would gladly recommend this app.

From what I can tell, it works by minimizing the window to the dock and replacing it with a window within the Minimizer application. When you "unshade" a window, it simply unminimizes it from the dock and closes out the Minimizer window. So, it can only work as fast as standard minimizing and unminimizing to the dock would take. (Actually, it seems a bit faster than that, perhaps because you don't have to put up with the standard minimize animations.)
