Absinthe overview

Absinthe 2.0 is finally here to provide your iOS 5.1.1 device with an untethered jailbreak. This release has been a large collaborative effort between Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Teams (Jailbreak Dream Team)

This jailbreak supports firmware 5.1.1 ONLY and is again one of the easiest jailbreaks to use (so easy your grandma could do it ;D)

Note: If you are already running a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1.1 search Cydia for "Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether" to simply untether the jailbreak. It's unnecessary to run this tool.

What’s new in version 1.0.0

Updated on Jun 02 2012

Version 2.0.4 (1.0.0):

Note: This product is not compatible with macOS Catalina and later.

Note: MacUpdate Desktop and Finder report this as 1.0.0, but the dev states it is 2.0.4.

  • Added iPad2,4 (new model) support.
  • Added lockdown error -5 workaround

Yes it is easy to use. But I lost the WiFi Connection of my iPad after jb. Could not find the Router anymore (a few inches in distance). Did a few restarts, iPad and Router… nothing. I then set the iPad back to non jb – the WiFi Connection is excellent. Any ideas?

I asked my gran to jalbreak my iPhone (the devs said she could!). She can follow simple instructions and press a mouse button, so what was there to lose, right? It took her less than 5 minutes and my phone is now so much more accessible! Thanks gran, but more so thanks to Chronic-Dev Team for making it so damn easy!

These guys are amazing. A quick, smooth, entirely trouble-free jailbreak on iPhone 4S. Just like legal software, only in many cases better.

OK, I retract my last review. In my frustration I jumped the gun and left a bad review of Absinthe. Turns out, I made a mistake and it was totally my fault. Once I did it the right way, it worked perfectly. Sorry Green Poison!

If you guys really hate Apple's approach with iOS you should walk away. Android is more open than iOS by a long shot. You are wasting your time on iOS Apple will never change. I find my Android devices superior to iOS anyway and have no issues with it talking with my Mac. I have both and prefer Android. iOS is for people who just want it to work simple and easy out the box and do not mind paying for software since someone had to engineer it. Apple is not a hobby company anymore they are a consumer company so they patch all this very quickly. Apple have lost that hobby feel now it is all gone in their obsessive control nature. If you want to be a hobby hacker (I refer to the real sense not in being bad) you need to leave Apple alone it is way too much hassle now. Okay fan boys mark me down but before you do get an Android device and use it for a couple weeks and you will see exactly what I am saying. You can have both you know I do. One for Apples mass consumer methods which I actually like and one for more freedom and hobby use which I also like. Anyway have fun just saying even MS is more open than Apple now.

Warning!! Apple may have already released a block for this JB. I was able to successfully JB my iPad3 around midday Friday (release day). I waited until late in the evening to update and re-JB my iPhone 4. During the update process, iTunes re-downloaded the 5.1.1 software. I thought it odd because I had already downloaded 5.1.1 about a week ago, but I didn't pay it any mind. After the update and restore, Absinthe said my device was not supported. Naturally I was shocked as their site clearly states iPhone 4 is supported. So I immediately suspected the newly downloaded 5.1.1 firmware and my suspicions were correct. The NEW firmware is 5.1.1 (9B208). The version I downloaded a week ago, and the version that is JB on my iPad is 5.1.1(9B206). Luckily I still had 9B206 for my iPhone on my computer. I simply did a restore with that version (it was still signed/approved by Apple) and Absinthe correctly detected my iPhone 4 and JB with ease. So, it would appear that Apple has immediately released new 5.1.1 firmware the blocks this JB. DO NOT update to 5.1.1 (9B208) if you want to JB your device. You have been warned.

iPhone 4S - Just jailbroke with Firmware version 5.1.1, followed the instructions to the letter, and it went flawlessly. The key is backing everything up, restoring your phone to 5.1.1 fresh, then jailbreaking. Cheers!

iPod Touch 4G, 10.6.8. Doesn't work for me at all, followed the procedure including the 5.1.1 apple firmware restore, always get "Recovery Completed. If you want to retry jailbreaking, unplug your device and plug it back in." I've now attempted this whole process at least five times with no luck. Perhaps I am not 133t enough... Also, what's up with forcing the window on top of everything else? Lame. 1 star for not bricking my unit.

This is my first posting on here, but wanted to clear up the problems people are having with the install. Evidently, if you did up OTA update to 5.1.1 (i.e. on your iPhone as opposed to through iTunes), it will error out. You have to do a full Restore to 5.1.1 through iTunes for this to work. Make sure you do a full back-up beforehand, so you can restore from back-up afterwards.

Was having a problem when jailbreaking, it said "Hmmm, seems something has gone wrong...", but after a clean restore it just works like a charm. Hope this will help those who got the same problem.
