A billion times, THANK YOU! This not only makes the Finder more attractive again, but also more functional. By looking at the colored icons, I can quickly organize and get to where I need to go! Insanely Great!

I installed this app today and it's working perfectly. It's great to have color back in the sidebar again. It's easier on my old eyes.

Thanks for updating it for Mavericks. It doesn't seem to work in certain dialog boxes like Mail or TextEdit (Safari is fine though).

Eigenlijk is het een oude versie van SIMBL op uw computer die het probleem heeft veroorzaakt, maar de schuld geven aan Sideeffects als het maakt u zich beter voelt ..

I get asked that a lot.. not that I know of. Remember I'm just the guy who makes the installer. There are three developers involved with this project. The guy to ask would be CooViewerZoom: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/40989/colorfulsidebar

So MacOS X 10.9 Mavericks was released today. Luckily so was ColorfulSidebar by CooViewerZoom (though not on MacUpdate at time of writing).

I have yet to upgrade to Mavericks and build a new SideEffects - hopefully within the next few days - so I haven't tried this, but this would be the method..

1. Grab a copy of the new ColorfulSidebar.bundle at http://goo.gl/J2lcfT

2. In the finder type cmd-shift-g

3. Paste in the following:
~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins

4. Replace the old bundle with the new one. Restart..

Good luck!

Currently SideEffects 1.8.7 won't work with MacOS X 10.9 Mavericks.. uninstall SideEffects 1.8.7 to prevent strange behaviour in the sidebar. I am awaiting a response from the SideEffects co-developers on the other side of the planet to me to see if they intend to update their respective components. Will post here if / when I get a reply..

Thanks,
Simon

I've never had any problems with Side Effects/Colorful Sidebar itself, but EasySIMBL makes my system flakier than a croissant. I eventually had to uninstall it in order to get any work done. I don't suppose there's any way to make this work without SIMBL?

I'm afraid not possible without EasySIMBL - it is essentially the part that does the work. But what you are describing sounds like it may be traces of SIMBL, not EasySIMBL. Please try:

in Finder, type command-shift-g, then paste in the following:
/Library/InputManagers/

What do you get?
If SIMBL is in there, delete it

Do any of the following, testing your crashing app, until it works:
log out / in, restart, uninstall / re-install sideeffects

When I navigate to the main Applications folder, there's no "RelaunchFinder," or "RelaunchTotalFinder" which is really what I want. (I even searched my Mac in case it was in a different location.) In addition, I saw a blog post indicating there should be an option to do a custom install so that you can select "Relaunch Total Finder" at that stage, but I do not have that option either. Can you help - I can make them both work if I launch them manually, but I'd like to have it working automatically.

Hi Coldtoes,

That's a really old version of SideEffects which installed my simple app, RelaunchFinder - long since removed since it's no longer required.

If you really need it for something it's here:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/42910/relaunchfinder

Are you saying SideEffects 1.8.7 isn't working? You would be the first for this version. In any case I would recommend restarting the Mac, maybe uninstalling and installing again if that doesn't help.

I should point out that RelaunchFinder is removed by the SideEffects installer, so you will need to add it back to the Applications folder after installing SideEffects.

coldtoes replied on 11 Mar 2013
It worked when I installed it, but Total Finder didn't relaunch. I did uninstall and reinstall but still had the same result. I rebooted and TotalFinder launched but SideEffects didn't. When I launched SideEffects manually (not sure what I did there since there's no app - reinstalled it again?) and then manually relaunched TotalFinder, both work together.

I don't have time to do another reinstall/reboot right now (supposed to be working instead of making my icons pretty!) but I can try that again later. Thanks.

The MacUpdate link to download RF seems to be broken, and I don't recall if that had the RTF app in the .dmg.

I've put it on my site: http://simonbarnett.co.za/downloads/RelaunchTotalFinder.app.zip

..though, once again.. you still shouldn't really need it.

Good luck!

Ah, OK, It's working. It just takes a minute for SideEffects to load - when I first boot up I see the regular Mountain Lion icons, so yesterday I immediately started uninstalling and reinstalling things at that point. Today the same thing happened but I looked away for a few moments and when I looked back, my customized icons had appeared. So it's working fine - I just needed to be a little more patient.
