Via Voice updater doesn't work at all with my OS 10.2.4 (IBM does say it works only with 10.2.2); although it appears to install fine, finder info says Via Voice is still v. 3.01. Hopefully IBM will get around to keeping Via Voice up to date for macs as it's basically a good program and much better than iListen - when it works.

I haven't tried this one, but I've tried iListen. IMO, voice recognition isn't quite there yet. I discovered a much cheaper manual alternative: Transcriva by Bartas Technologies. It's only twenty bucks. :-D

I've waited for decent dictation software and have purchased (some while ago) an update to version 3 - expecting something of use. However my copy seems to have become 'stuck' attempting to update my voice model - with a suggestion to allow additional virtual memory (on OS X with 7+ Gb on the applications volume alone). This would suggest that the application has either corrupted one of its files (which one would think it should detect) or has a serious memory overload. Help would be gratefully received however. I appear to be stuck with the system as installed, supplemented with 'odd' words added to the vocabulary. Even then correction is not so hot as they claim. You can move forwards or backwards a word or line ... but not 2, 3, 4 etc. - most odd when you detect in phrases. If I have failed to find the relevant help files - I would be grateful to be told where to look - but then that is also a comment on the help files and support files. Meanwhile it has been handed to scansoft - who I remember as merrily sitting on the demise of paperport ... I work in a technical field. Each time I have attempted to exploit the odd half day to find something better than my (poor) touch typing I have failed. (Running OS 10.3.3 on powerbook, 867MHz, 256Kb L2 cache, 1 Mb L3 cache, I Gb memory ... how much more does it need to work?)

Unfortunately, I have no answers. I just wanted you to know that I've encountered the same problem. At one point the program seemed to update to 3.0.2 but after reading all the calibration stories, it was unable to analyze. I removed, reinstalled, no luck. I used the uninstaller, then searched the drive and removed the leftover files (prefs etc.) which should let me start over. Reinstalled from my original 3.0 restarted, used the upgrade -- no luck. If you or anyone gets anywhere with any tech support PLEASE let me know. I'll try some more and if I'm successful, I'll let you know.

I aree with your observation that: "my copy seems to have become 'stuck' attempting to update my voice model - with a suggestion to allow additional virtual memory (on OS X with 7+ Gb on the applications volume alone)." I can't see what is wrong or how to cure the memory problem and the manual is no use. It also fails to make clear the need to apply British English to the COMPUTER preferences, rather than the application preferences (wasting me 45 minutes of britspeak on a US-tuned voice recognition system...). Thoroughly amateur for something carrying the IBM name. On new iBook G4, 512 MB RAM: do i need more, or would i be wasting more of my money? Wake up, IBM!!

It sucks - Poor assistant, no message really helpful in order to make any kind of troubleshooting, different instability on Panther. Save your money !!!

Update to my last comments: For some reason the ViaVoice started working again in Panther - as it did in 10.2.8. Still no training available for untrained commands. IListen also came out with an update for Panther since my last comments.

This product only works "correctly' with earlier versions of Jaguar, starts breaking down around 10.2.6 (no command training), and is almost unuseabe with Panther (no speakpad, correction window or command list). Its marketing and support have been outsourced to Scansoft. Its future remains publically unknown. No updates have been announced. Currently this product has all the trappings of an application at its end-of-life phase. To make matters worse, I know of no other reliable voice recognition product that works well on the Mac or that is Panther (10.3) certified. I include IListen in this consideration.

Interested in knowing whether from your review on any progress has been perceived in either improvements on ViaVoice or iListen or if you have detected any new software in this area... voice to text. Thanks

IBM is seriously lagging on this product. This update is basically at patch so that it will work with Jaguar. The software itself hasn't been improved since version 1.0-two years ago, and is riddled with bugs. Get with the program, IBM!
