SMBUp re-instates Samba as a service of your mac and provides a simple interface to manage the service.

NOTE: The application is donationware. A reminder will appear upon startup once a day; it can be dismissed by checking the donation checkbox. The checkbox is based on the system of honor: It won't do any verification on whether the donation has effectively been made.

Keep in mind that while the application will allow you to create users for accessing authenticated shares it will only warn if those users have more than 15 groups assigned to them,

I have a late 2006 imac duo core with 3GB of memory running Mountain Lion. I could not access the drives on the imac after upgrading from leopard. After installing SMBUP I could again access the files from my media player, eGreat. The problem is that SMBUP requires almost 1GB of memory to make 3 USB attached drives available. These are very large media drives of 2x4TB's and 1x12TB. Now everything runs very slow almost coming to a stand still. I'm now considering downgrading back to Leopard as I use the iMac mainly as a media server.

This would be really nice to see fleshed out more fully and kept more up to date (perhaps even integrate with Homebrew's samba install). I'd be willing to pay a little for an app such as this that keeps abreast of any and all updates.

The new Apple smbd is just buggy as all get out and has about driven me insane with a mixed network environment. Even thought installing "Server" would help, but to no avail.

Before I go off and spend a lot of time playing with this, can anyone tell me if this is similar to the old SharePoints app and preference pane (http://tinyurl.com/6o6c287)?
I use to use that for AFP and SMB but it hasn't been updated in years.

Great idea, but unfortunately it did not work as I expected. There were multiple permission and access errors when I tried to configure a guest shared folder to access from Win7PC, so I just gave up. But the app is really promising.

A life saver! When upgrading to Lion broke my connection with my WDTV Live I tried many media servers with dismal results. Was about to downgrade back to SnowLeopard when I came across this gem. Worked flawlessly from the get go and I dare say it feels even more stable than the original Samba on my Leopard OS. Thanks a lot.

I was looking for a solution to get my WDTV Live Plus box working with Lion. This worked fantastic. Dead simple setup. Thanks.

Something does not work for me. I managed the install and created the shared volumes but when I try to access them from Boxee, they with a name such as XX__MSBROWSE__XX/ and I cannot access. I get errors like Operation timed out or Could not retrieve data. These errors come very fast after the connection.

Thanks for the work anyway.

I ran it and it said i should redo samba (I did try the macports install without luck in the past) I hit ok. It downloaded something and now all i get is an application error even after restart that says: An exception of class KeyNotFoundException was not handled. The application must shut down.

Keep in mind that while the application will allow you to create users for accessing authenticated shares it will only warn if those users have more than 15 groups assigned to them, even though OS X Lion won't allow such users to authenticate properly. Make sure you edit those users' groups to reduce their number.

The application is not crippled in any way if no donation is made, although donations are appreciated as they help us continue improving the software and providing new tools :) NOTE: SMBUp installs Samba, which in turn replaces Apple's OS X's native netbios and SMB services. This means that while connecting to servers from the Finder remains functional, the Finder won't be able to "browse" network services and servers from the network won't show up in the Finder's sidebar. Be advised.
