Isn’t surprising to see applications (once ‘programs) fall behind the startng point at their birth, like Skype (now a not funny joke, compared at what was version 2.8)and this one, or fallen in the oblivion of a fulgid past, like Yahoo, the total disaster and failure caused by a heap of bigots who were fighting any kind of acquaintance between users (like NOW icq (I will write it again caoitalized when it will DESERVE it!) and Skype, leaving to Facebook the monopole of the socials? Now the name itself lost totally its original meaning because, even if You Seek Him,… you will never FIND him, now that any search between users is impossible! By the way, even here nobody cares about this 'fake-ICQ', such a shame for who is already disgusted by Skype's lost of any dignity!

Nobody with any level of responsibility should be installing Russian or Chinese applications, it's far too dangerous. MacUpdate should help us in this regard by indicating (as best as possible) the country of origin associated with software listings.

first of all, it was originally developed in Israel in 1996, and became the first online chat application and extremely popular. There was no Google and nothing really like that yet. Later it was acquired by AOL, and in 2010 by Digital Sky Technologies, which later changed its name Mail.Ru Group, or Mail.Ru. It's a top email service provider in Russia. And you better fear of Google and FB, they're the ones who control you, follow you everywhere you go online. Mail.ru never did what these evils keep doing.

Can you remember when there were profiles carefully filled up and researchable?
We could not just ''seek you' but also FIND you.
Same for Skype, worst for the died chats (Yahoo, MSN, AIM...) and the socials, now dominated by Facebook property dictatorship.
Nothing against the good boy Zuckenberg but fact is that politics thrusted its nails in any way common people could have a free dialogue, from China to u.s.a., which (like any other dictatorship, not only the islamists countries ) pretends to defend us from terrorism but in cact defends itself from any criticism, like the middle age catholic church.
Internet was a dream of freedom and dialogue above the borders and distances, became a jail with cells full of hidden microphones spying us and a new kind of first radio, then television to manipulate we common people!

Not only ICQ is now under Russian control, it is the primary method by which Command and Control instructions are sent and received in a malware or rootkit process. Don't install on a Mac if you don't want to be the target of these nefarious deeds.

ICQ on the Mac was never top-notch. Way back when, it was a questionable, buggy, hobbled Carbon application under OS9 and X. You couldn't do much with it: file transfers worked maybe twice, ever, and doing anything but the most simple of things was nigh unto impossible. Then it went away for a bit. The developers actually said that they had no intention of making an updated Mac client. But it came back -- under new ownership, I'm given to believing -- and came out with... this. This is not like the old, crusty Carbon ICQ. This is less an application and more like something you'd put ointment on. It's wonky, it works sometimes, there's just something about it that smells a little... off. If talking to the three or four people that still use ICQ is really, really, really important to you, then by all means, have at it. But if you're not... there're are way better ways of communicating. Like the postal service. Or smoke signals.

While updating the listing to 1.3.9, ClamXav flagged the download as infected with Osx.adware.macvx. This might have been a false-positive, but please take care if updating your installation of ICQ. I report the bug and also send crash log to ICQ development team. I have to revert to 1.3.2, which can be downloaded from ICQ web site. this version 1.3.2 work fine. Fix please ICQ. Crash when startup after updated to 1.3.4. Please note that Macupdate link give you the old 1.3.2 version. And the same 1.3.2 version is there on both ICQ webpage and MAS. If you use version 1.3.2 download from ICQ, check for update will prompt you to update to 1.3.4 After update, ICQ 1.3.4 no longer work. It crash on startup (my Mac is a RMBP 15 inches mid 2012 running OSX 10.9.5 seed 13F7) and Safari 7.1 seed 2. I have to revert back to 1.3.2 from MAS that work fine I have filed a bug report to ICQ, No response so far. This is why ICQ is getting less and less popular this day

ICQ 1.3.4 has also been released on Mac App Store but it also crash on startup. The developer site still offer version 1.3.2 that work for download. After installed 1.3.2 and updated to 1.3.4, ICQ crash on startup. So the problem is with both MAS and developer's version.

ICQ response to me with a canned message asking me to capture screen and send to them. I cannot do that because ICQ do not start properly and no program window show up for me to do so.

Crash report hat I have sent should be more than enough to allow the dev to get it fixed.

The developer is in Russia, I think. fixed please.

I checked what's downloading at the developer site. It says it's 1.1.2, but what you get is still 1.1.0. That's for the developers to straighten out. Sometimes developers forget to increment the version number. But the date on the file is November 3, 2013. So this is indeed an old version.

So hmm: The version at the Apple Mac App Store is 1.1.2. OK. Except I'm going to stick with what's at the developer's website as they I've gotten caught with broken Mac App Store versions and had to wait for Apple to approve the fixed version I can already download via the developer's website. Exm: I'm currently waiting for Apple to approve a bug fixed version of the 'Cookie' application that kills a big fat bug. I wish I'd gotten it at the developer's site. Etc.

This oooold version still runs on 10.6.7 and rarely crashed over the past 8 years.. There is a new official Mac-version based on Adobe AIR, but it doesn't import my old databases (history), so I keep up using this old one for now. The old version has_no_ gimmicks at all, it is a straight text-based messenger and that's what I want. No web 2.0 fuzz, no multi-feature bastard. That's why I was never jealous about the "feature-rich" Windows version..

Why isn't ICQ for Mac updated? It is almost 2 years old now and the Windows version is far ahead, has games and you can do video conferences, it has far more features. I can't receive files from some Winusers with ICQ 3.4, it has an rather ugly interface and you can't press 'Return' instead of clicking onto 'Send'... fix all these issues and I'll be happy with ICQ for Mac... so far it's rather useless for me...

ICQ is a truly unique messaging client, but it needs some major features that other clients (Adium/Fire) have implemented. I adore Adiums tabbed chat window and spell checking. And Fires encryption abilities. If ICQ added these features I would easily make it my one and only client. ICQ also needs another interface change, i don't find it's currebt design useful at all. Noted ICQ features: Live messageing/chat, and messages that wait for you to recieve like email.

This is the 3.4 Beta Build 16... that's what the installer says at least. This version offers interoperation with AIM. Interestingly, I couldn't figure out how to use this with the new AIM beta, ICQ is very easy to use. There are cases when Fire doesn't recognize a authorization request or doesn't handle it well... it's always handy to have an "orignial" client at hand.

The ICQ website clearly says "build version" but on downloading ICQ 3.4b16.sit the filename becomes "ICQ 3.4 Beta Installer" "Build" or "Beta" - its no wonder the user is getting confused. It is still a good application, its free, if only it would stay up to date with the pc version and not lag so far behind.

The only thing that saves this piece of software is the fact that it's the offical ICQ client and can do a few more things then the IM clones like Fire and Proteus. However for something that's been out for atleast 4 years it hasn't really improved at all and still sports the same un-mac like and confusing interface it always has. If anything it got worse under mac os x and is still slow and buggy. It's worth having on your hard drive only if you find yourself having to File Transfer to other ICQ users.

ICQ should urgently re-think their naming strategy... NOW they tell us the "b21" stands for "build 21", not beta. If you read the posts below, almost everyone (including me) thought the "b" is for "beta" and the "a" means alpha. This is very confusing. I guess some people probably went looking for something else, thinking that ICQ is still offering unfinished software. Why don't they make it easy and give it a simple version number like 3.2.21?
