Fast indexed file search.

Overview

Toucan Search is a fast indexed file search application.

An efficient solution for finding just about everything!

  • Locate your documents, folders, music, movies and more; instantly
  • Find files by name, but also by path
  • Simple, easy to use and intuitive user interface
  • Quick file and folder indexing
  • Small resource usage
  • Search options customizable to fit your needs
  • Compact database
  • Real time database update
  • Use hotkey for on-the-spot search
Finding exactly what you need can be a long, tedious process:
  • Spotlight, unlike Toucan, doesn't index your entire computer, which is why your searches often come up short
  • Other applications, while able to locate files, are very slow because they search for files by scanning your disk drive
  • The locate command line utility is great, however, it requires a lot of unnecessary work on your part (locate, copy the file path and then open it)
Toucan indexes your files and folders to return results quickly.

Toucan is much more than "just" a search engine; once you find the files and folders you're looking for, you can:

  • Open
  • Reveal in finder
  • Open a terminal in the file's directory
  • Get info
  • Quick look for preview
  • Compress files/directories
  • Compare files using FileMerge (needs to be installed)
  • Move to trash / delete
  • Copy
  • Copy file names
  • Copy file paths
  • Copy enclosing folder paths
  • Drag and drop to other applications such as Mail.app, Finder, etc
Results are sortable and you can save them as xml, html and csv.

Toucan, the only search application you need on your Mac.

Please correct your MU page which sez: "Fast indexed file search (free until January 1). Free". Actually it is $2.99 at AppStore. See good video at developer's website, lady with nice voice. I have happily depended on EasyFind for years, and never found it to miss any files, as several others have claimed. For $2.99, Toucan is easily worth a try. My stars rating I will correct later if possible, after I have used it a while. Main thing is for MU to correct the price info.

Please note that if you want to purchase Toucan Search that the developer has the following to say as a consequence of Apple's sandboxing requirements: Bottom line: sorry, Toucan won't be updated. It's unfortunate that Apple changed the rules a year after introducing the app store.

i bought Toucan Search and have generally been quite pleased with it. At $2.99, it's hard to find room to complain, and actually i was impressed at the level of configurability in the preferences. The old freeware Locator X used to be my mainstay search application for years (never could get used to Spotlight nor found it as fast or useful as a locate database search), so Toucan is filling in that gap for me now that PPC apps don't work in Lion/ML. Toucan is quick and usually has low resource overhead (except a few odd times when it spikes CPU usage and needs to be restarted). It's obviously young and needs some polishing (search within results is the most glaring omission), but it's eminently useful and a bargain at its price point. Recommended as the best non-Spotlight search solution on recent Mac OS versions.
