Jettison overview

Jettison automatically ejects external disks from your Mac before your computer goes to sleep.

Simplify those last few seconds when you grab your MacBook and run out the door. Just close the lid and Jettison will automatically eject your backup drive, iPod, or whatever is connected so you can safely unplug it. Say goodbye to "disk was not ejected properly" errors and waking your computer back up because you forgot to eject everything.

Jettison even makes sure that Time Machine backups and file server volumes are properly shut down before they're removed. Your backups and shared files are safe and sound.

And what if you decide not to leave, and open your MacBook back up? Jettison will check to see if your drives are still connected and will mount them back on the Desktop if they're there.

What’s new in version 1.8.5

Updated on Sep 01 2022

  • Updated for compatibility with macOS 13 Ventura
  • Remounting of network and server disks is more reliable
  • Jettison now shows notifications both when it ejects drives and when it remounts them
  • The progress window remembers its screen location rather than centering itself every time
  • When eject-on-sleep is disabled, Jettison's menu bar icon is an outlined eject symbol rather than one with a slash through it
  • System notifications are now displayed when manually ejecting and remounting disks as well as when its done automatically
  • RAM disks are not treated as external disks, and a warning is shown before manually ejecting one
  • When a volume can't be ejected, more information is logged for troubleshooting
  • NFS volumes are recognized as networked drives
  • Error handling and reporting has been improved
  • Remounting drives is now faster
  • Fixed a small memory leak

Excellent app, does exactly what it says, and for $4.95. Totally took care of the issue with my computer going to sleep and shutting off my external hard drives without ejecting them. Everything now runs the way it should. As another reviewer noted, this is the best $5 I've spent for a while.

Awesome little piece of software. It just works It was driving me crazy because I couldn't eject my external SSD from my 2017 MacBook Pro. Nothing I tried worked, including killing quicklook ui. Bought this thing and it just worked, instantly. And it also tells you exactly what program is holding up the unmount so you can kill it. Best $5 I've spent in a while.

downloaded to my brand new mac 27", that I am having loads of problems with. Fitted two external SSD harddrives, one for a dual boot with High Sierra and the other as a time machine backup. Always forgetting to unmount so thought Jettison was the answer. So closed down the computer with gay abandon only to be told on restart that my external ssd drive had been improperly closed down (or words to that effect). I think the app would be improved by some sort of window showing the drives being unmounted and then a message saying "all done and the computer is now closing down". Having said that there is something wrong I need to make sure I have set it up properly else it isn't working. I am running Catalina, don't know if that is the problem. DaveC

Jettison is very helpful app in modern high-speed world. It's so exhausted to eject any hard drives or other devices from a laptop before you quickly close a lid and need to hurry somewhere. Jettison is the right thing to have in this case. So, download this cheap useful app and enjoy it assistance.

Excellent utility. It's one of those utilities that you take for granted until you use someone else's Mac. It runs quietly in the background and does its work while staying out of the way. The developer is also very responsive and helpful.

I'm not sure whether the hotkeys were added in version 1.3 or 1.4 -- but now that they're there, I'm happy to give Jettison 5 stars. Two detailed comments, in case they might help anyone: (1) For me, Jettison has one *big* advantage over Mountain. When I reawaken my laptop, Jettison is smart enough to remount only the disks that were mounted when I put the machine to sleep. Mountain mounts everything that's connected to the machine -- which in my case includes some backup partitions that I don't want it to mount. (2) There's a glitch in the instructions on the Jettison website for upgrading from the Mac App Store version to Jettison 1.4.3. The website says to start by launching Jettison from the disk image so it can retrieve the registration info from your copy of the Mac App Store version; and that part works fine. But then Jettison will offer to copy itself from the disk image to your Applications folder -- if you tell it to go ahead, it will silently fail. The work-around is to tell Jettison to quit, then remove the old version from the Applications folder, then copy the new version manually.

Used to work OK, with some flaws every now and than. But since a few weeks it's nothing but trouble. Unmounts my 128 GB Nifty (however it says it can't), but fails to remount the disc. Only a restart helps to remount the disc. I am using 1.4.3 on OSX 10.10.2

Great for my needs: which is to be able to eject and remount my external disks quickly and easily using applescript apps I created. Lots of extra options which may be more useful for others.

Look in the FAQ if you bought this via the MAS. To do a free update, download from the dev's site. Run the trial version for the dmg with the MAS installed. This copies the license over. Then just copy over the trial version and it will be licensed. The MAS version is pretty broken. So worth doing.

Which version is recommended? 1.3 from St.Clair Software website or 1.2.4 from Apple App Store, sorry if this is a dumb question, but why are there two versions available concurrently, Thanks! Running 10.9.1

For the most part, Jettison works, but it isn't able to eject a disk if it's "in use." As gatovadio notes below, often what qualifies as "in use" is an app that is not actively reading or writing. There's no ability to quit apps, or to run an Applescript that could quit chronic offenders. A lot of the time I end up having to manually eject one of my disks. I'm going to give unDock a try, as the new version offers more features than Jettison, even if it doesn't (yet) trigger on sleep.

It would be a nice addition to auto quit apps which are in use by some disks (media players or wallpaper switchers which don't even require me to save my work before quitting).

I had a dismount problem with a external firewire hard drive, when it entered sleep, Jettison eliminated the problem completely, now I can let the computer go to sleep when ever it wants.

This works well as I often forget to unmount my drives before sleep. I wish it would also unmount my iPad but I gather that isn't possible.
