It brought my Mac Mini Server to a halt and I couldn't run the software. OS X 10.9.1.
I had to force shut down my computer. I gave it the benefit of the doubt, tried it again, and the software seemed to make more progress at launch, this time scanning for cookies, until eventually it froze my system again. This time I had Activity Monitor open in case I had to Force Quit the application but it was of no use since the whole system froze again. I gave it at least 20-30 minutes each time the system froze before checking again and finally performing the force shutdown.
Upon restart, my Mac was slow and unresponsive as Cookie Stumbler, Activity Monitor and Firefox were starting up, since they were running when the computer froze.
I wanted to try an alternative to Macscan since it hasn't been updated in over a year. As they say, "if it ain't broke don't fix it." Macscan still performs superbly and the spyware definitions and cookie blacklists are updated regularly. The last ones are from January 2 2014.
Using CleanApp I removed 28 files related to Cookie Stumbler, including the application itself.

"We have never heard of any issues like this", would you like me to post some of the e-mails to Write-It? Or better read other reviews on MacUpdate. The problems mentioned on this site are already years old. And yes, I did buy the software, experienced the lockups and CPU-hogging .. I am a very happy Cookie user now.

Software improves over time. You used it in mid-2012, that's 2 years ago soon. Back then, Cookie certainly had problems too, as did we. That's what updates are for.

Caused nothing but problems when installed. It literally broke the most important extension I use 1Password. Multiple instances appeared in the dock, required force quitting, non-existant support. It had to be uninstalled and was a complete waste of money, with no possibility of recovery.

I also found out that the version I bought through MacUpdate wasn't the same version as sold through the App Store, and that the MacUpdate version is a watered down version - not that it would matter since it breaks things and had to be removed.

Stay AWAY.

Cookie Stumbler doesn't touch extensions unless the "clean local and global storage" maintenance action is selected. If it is, a clear warning is shown that the extensions will be reset and you're asked to confirm this.

The AppStore version is Cookie Stumbler Basic and is no longer maintained because Apple won't let us update it. The version sold on MU is the full, more advanced version.

I don't have an e-mail from "Golfgirl" in my inbox, but we do respond to all emails we get. Could you get in touch?

Cookie Stumbler phones home when you run it, sadly the WriteIt people have had a dysfunctional server for about a month now. THey keep posting nonsense to Twitter about how they are almost fixed, but it still isn't fixed. I have to wonder about teh competence of any tech organization that can't even manage to keep a server running

DO yourself a favor and do not buy this until they have either 1) fixed their server problems or 2) gone out of business, which is going to happen if they can achieve #1.

Licensing is cumbersome. You have to download a licensing file instead of just entering a code. The process is very buggy. The licensing file works on one Mac but not on the other, I get an error saying I should re-download the file. I already did, still doesn't work and no reply from support.

Worst is that the application often crashes and always automatically scans as soon as you start it. There is a Cancel button but it only crashes the app instead of canceling the scanning so you can change settings.

Just bought the 5 license promo and find it kills the 1Password extension in Safari6.0.4 with OS 10.7.5
Only solution is to uninstall CS at this point.

The prompt support for this app is outstanding. I had trouble getting this to run without having to "force quit" several times. Seems to be okay now however.

Also, does this product have an icon in the dock and need to constantly be running? Or does it live behind the scenes?

Also, the single license version of this software can be had at the App Store for $6.99

Hello,

Cookie Stumbler does have an icon in the dock and no, it doesn't constantly run. The only thing that runs in the background is its agent, which launches Cookie Stumbler in schedule mode once your cleaning schedule needs to be executed.

The App Store version is Cookie Stumbler Basic, which is a "basic" version of Cookie Stumbler Standard. They're not the same. For more info on the differences, click here: http://www.writeitstudios.com/index.php?express=yes

Blizz had trouble on 13 Apr 2012
Just decided to try this out, in case it would be interesting to purchase. It doesn't manage to get through the cookie detection. After it reads all cookies it starts the "locate & analyze domains" bit of the process. Pretty much at exactly half of the process (according to the progressbar) it just hangs and that's how it stays. I've restarted it but the same result.

Cookie Stumbler eliminates Ad & Tracking cookies and allows you conveniently to maintain only the cookies on your computer which you really want to keep. This eliminates threats to your privacy and helps your web browsers to run faster. It will recognize known Ad/Tracking cookies via definitions which are updated frequently similar to anti-virus software and so far unidentified Ad/tracking cookies via an intelligent heuristics engine, which is built-in. Cookie Stumbler isn't dependent on advertising companies to "allow" users to opt out as some other applications. It does its job independently and it will do so without interfering when you browse the web.

Cookie Stumbler is extremely easy to use. Once you have chosen either one of the default selection criteria such as your bookmarks or history or have put the cookies of some sites which you really want to keep on your 'keep-list', you can run the cleaning process automatically to a schedule which suits your needs. The schedules can be built easily and as customized and flexible as you want them to be. Supporting almost every commonly used browser in the market (currently Safari, Firefox, Chromium, Chrome,Roccat Camino, OmniWeb, Flash) you can use this program either to investigate exactly what websites are storing on your computer or clean it in one click or just let it run without you even remembering to run it. You can even integrate Cookie Stumbler actions into your own workflow by using our Automator Actions. Whatever you chosen workflow might be: Cookie Stumbler will make your Mac more safe and run smoother.

For more details see our website (WriteIt! Studios' website will open in a new window).
