HandbrakePM can convert a lot of video files via the Handbrake Command Line Interface application (HandbrakeCLI). Simply drag and drop video files (not folders, only files) onto the icon or window and click the hammer-icon in the toolbar to convert your movies.
What's New
Version 1.5:
  • Found a way to reactivate the app after processing so it responds to mouse clicks again. Hopefully this solves the problem where the app would not come forward.

If all you want to do is convert some AVIs for the iPad, as I often do, it couldn't be simpler:

Select a format from the presets (e.g. iPad, iPod, iPhone, AppleTV, Android, Tablet), choose the output folder, drag the movie files into its window and click the "Process" button.

I had tried other converter tools before, but they usually overwhelm me with too many options I do not care about for my needs. The only other tool I know that is as easy as this is Elgato's turbo.h264 HD.

by its description, handbrakepm can only use the cli's default presets.

I tried that one first, of course - but it did not do what I wanted it to do, so I wrote my own.

I had hoped this wound have been built into HB itself but the developer forums folks said "each movie's transcoding should be hand tailored, blah blah blah..." I wanted to transcode a hundred Looney Tunes from the 50's and don't care if the quality is perfect, this is what I've been waiting for. Thanks.

Whatever preset I select it does not change the output size. If I load a 1280 x720 movie and select the "iPhone Legacy" I should not get a movie that is still 1280 x720.

In that case, you should use Handbrake itself. This app is meant for batch conversion by dropping, for example, 200 episodes in its window and then GO!
