Hasn't been updated in a long time, but the same goes for other compression/archiving utilities that I've been using until now, namely Keka, 7zX, UnRar, GUI Tar, and RarMe. To have all those format options in one app, is really a plus. But Entropy needs some serious work.

(1) Password-protection shouldn't only be set to specific passwords: you should also be able to define a generic password protection setting, which makes Entropy prompt you with a password input request; that way you wouldn't be forced to make a discrete setting for *every* password you want to use.

(2) One big plus is the integration of tar + xz, which I use a lot for archiving purposes, in my case with a homebrew installation of xz, and a bash script running through an Automator service. However, the Filter setting to remove ".DS_Store" (and in my case also files that begin with "._") doesn't work for txz archives, which is annoying because you can actually exclude these hidden files/resources with shell scripts. Furthermore, there is no way to specify compression ratios for xz, as you can do in the shell, i.e. settings possible up to 9 plus extreme mode (for bigger files). And since txz is often used for backup purposes, it would be nice to have the ability to append the archiving date and time to the archive name. Last but not least, for unix file distribution, it would be nice to have the ability to force user/group settings to specific UIDs and GIDs, e.g. generic 501 and 20, force root & admin group etc., plus options for subdirectories, or simply to retain current user/group settings (for backup purposes). At least you can specify the destination folder, which lets you txz-archive files/folders in source directories with root/admin permissions.

(3) It would also be nice to have user-defined presets in the Finder's services menu, e.g. 7z, 100 MB split, high ratio, password prompt etc.

A year and a half and no update in sight. I think it's safe to assume this project is dead. Time to move on to other developers that give a crap about updating their software.

Excellent application! The best of the genre. But it's past time for an update to Yosemite interface and support for new compression formats.

Any ETA on a new update? It's been almost a year. Amazing app, by the way. Is there any possibility of you adding .DMG support [creating DMGs for instance] in future updates? That would make this app perfect.

Without any doubt this is the best application of the genre for the Mac. Is my application standard for compression and decompression of files and worth every penny! Lack only support zipx files and have translation to Brazilian Portuguese to then win five stars! Highly Recommended!

I like it! Clean and simple interface, yet plenty of features. I'm knocking off half a star because if you set Entropy as the default app for zip files (and other archives), it assigns an eyeball-burning orange icon to them, which really looks out of place among all the other OS X icons. The dev says that redesigning the file icon is on his to do list, so I'm hoping my eyes get a break soon.

Over all this is a very good program, how ever unless I missed it, I cannot see theability to turn all the folders I put in the table each in to their own archive not one big archive. Also the buttons in the tool bar are not labeled for voice over users. Help tags would be nice though if lables cannot be provided. Thoughts?

Of all the archiving apps (ones which can CREATE and extract) I've tried, this one pleases me the most. It is able to handle files +4GB, which is important to me because I often need to archive large disk images, and have to break them up so they can be sent or stored on Windows FAT32 drives. The ability to define presets is fantastic and makes it easy to select the one that fits the job, i can define a preset for large images that doesn't waste time compressing (just chunks it up), into predefined sizes, like 250MB, or 1GB. The only other tool that comes close but doesn't have as nice a GUI is Ez7z. sArchiver never handled +4GB files and Entropy appears faster than BetterZip.

I guess $20 is kind of a lot for an archive utility. But that's the only possible gripe I can see about this program. Entropy handles both creation and extraction of all the major formats, and quite a few minor formats. Its default settings are sensible, but can be configured to suit lots of different methods of work. Because almost everything I need to do has been added to the Services menu, I hardly ever actually launch Entropy directly. But that's the way a utility should be: unobtrusive, waiting to do what you need, and then out of the way again. Great, great program.

Very impressed with Entropy - in particular the speed in unzipping a file. It also has some beautifully styled touches that really add to the pleasure of using it. The program gets out of your way too - it doesn’t need to open the archive before it unpacks it. Finally it supports a great variety of formats, including some of the more rare ones. Downsides? I don’t particularly care for the icon that it gives files. Given the program is so elegant, the file icons seem quite clumsy. But this is a little thing, and it doesn’t affect the functionality.

It's just fit to me. Preview pane for me looks cluttering, but for some people it's must have. You can add it and please add option to turn it off. Great RAR built in.

Was contemplating buying this, but just noticed the comments in the "WHAT'S NEW" section for Version 1.4.1. "Improvements - Package-folders are now atomically extracted". "Atomically Extracted" you say !! Sod that.. I don't need a Chernobyl/Fukushima in my neighbourhood, but at least with this version of Entropy you can guarantee it will "nuke" large files :-)

I get this error whenever I try to include any kind of .DMG file in an archive: http://i.imgur.com/cgHUJ.png Don't know what the problem is. Most other archivers have no issue with .DMG files. The only error message in Console regarding the matter is the following: "2/29/12 5:34:14.335 PM Entropy: [Iridium] Could not move archive to the final destination"

There are problems extracting gstencil-files like the one downloadable from this site: http://graffletopia.com/stencils/414 Extracted with Entropy.app and opened with OmniGraffle leads to an error message that there is no file content… Extracted with Archive Utility.app - no error.

I love entropy...it's the perfect mac replacement for old winrar users like my. But i would like a feature that permit (in auto-extract mode) to extract in the same place if in the archive there is only one file and create new sub-folder if in the archive there are more than one file. I hope only in this new feature, for the rest is excellent.

Something that kind of bugs me is when I go to archive a folder, the name will be truncated. It would be nice if the archived file kept the same name as the original instead of shortening it for whatever reason. As an example, if I named a folder "Entropy 1.3.8", the resulting archived file will be named "Entropy 1.3", cutting off the "8". Maybe it thinks everything after the period is a file extension name, so it leaves off the rest, I don't know. I'm constantly having to re-enter the rest of the name after the file is archived. Any ideas would be appreciated.

When I try to extract an Icon-Archive like this one: http://www.iconarchive.com/download/s1374/leoyue/the-bourne-ultimatum/01977_thebourneultimatum_macosx.zip the icons are missing. Whereas extracting with Archive Utility.app does it right.

It is a bit curious, that the Finder window is closed after extraction. Yes, there is an option to show the files after extraction. But this is not the same. Especially if the original Finder window was opened with de-collapsed Subfolders (in List/Column/Coverflow View Mode). Also the Back Button functionality is lost because the history isn't available in the new Finder window. It would be great to have the same behaviour as with the built-in Archive Utility.app as Entropy default or at least as option.

if you want an archiving tool with a slick UI, look no further. One of the few apps I knew I'd get it as soon as I saw it. And seems to be more stable that other contentders in that genre too. Please add a "clean" button to the toolbar. :)

Tried they app and I love it. It does what it says it will do with a pretty slick UI. I was prepared to buy when I read your license agreement and now understand that this is subscription software I have questions. Agreement is for one year…upgrades free for 1 year. So I have to repurchase this software every year to get upgrades no matter how small or large or if they even happen? ? Why not charge an upgrade price for significant upgrades and minor upgrades are free like most developers? I know it seems to not be a big issue but it is. I had this problem with Synchronize Pro and found my self having to pay for small upgrades just because the calendar ticks another month. Many of which were upgrades I (and others) had been waiting for months for just to have the program work as it should. At $20.00 buck per year if I use this software for 5 years it will cost me $100.00 with or without upgrades of any significance. This model leaves to much unclear for the end user and puts us at the mercy of the developer and his ethics (which by the way may be impeccable). Rather than being charged for innovation and improvement I am charged because time passes? Is the App store version the same? I guess I may have to look further and thats a shame as this is great software. Developer, if you read this please help me understand why any end user should purchase under this model. I clearly do not mind paying for significant upgrades to software but to have to pay in advance on a yearly basis for minor upgrades, upgrades required to make the software work or possibley no upgrades is just not right.
