CodeWatcher overview

With CodeWatcher, do away with the "save" switch to browser" refresh" cycle.

CodeWatcher is a simple developer WebBrowser that automatically reloads its contents whenever a file in the base directory changes. It is the perfect tool if you are building Websites. Just give it a local html file to display and it will scan the folder for changes and reload appropriately.

CodeWatcher realizes whenever you save or rename or delete a file in your project directory, be it CSS, HTML, JPG, PNG, CFG, and automatically reloads your html so you can see the results immediately " without the cumbersome switch-and-reload moniker.

Features:

  • Fullscreen Browsing
  • Browser window can be always on top
  • Define exception folders that shouldn't trigger a reload
  • Set an URL to reload instead of the local path (i.e. localhost:8080)
  • Create projects for all your development sites
  • Build-In FireBug Lite (Online version)
  • History

This is decent and useful; hardly a one star app. Forget AppleScript. 99-percent of Mac users won't bother with it to automate a reload. Forget the Safari Extension. It doesn't do the same thing. If you want to code and tweak and see a live preview and don't want to spend much money, CodeWatcher works as advertised. At 99-cents it's a bargain (consider workflow, time and effort, etc.). For those who hate the Mac App Store, get used to it, folks. It's the future but it's here now. It won't be long before many very good Mac apps, including those from Apple, will ONLY be available on the App Store.

This can actually be achieved with the Tab Reload Safari Extension. So its not so useful. P.S. This is a comment and not a review because don't need to purchase this app hence my comment above.

The same functionality can be achieved with AppleScript + Safari.

I have two questions which I couldn't find answers to in the product description: 1. What rendering engine is this? Webkit? 2. If Webkit, does it provide Web Inspector (which I think is more complete than Firebug Lite).

If this were freely available instead of only at the Apple Store, I would try it out. Since it isn't, I'm not.
