Cookie Stumbler overview

Cookie Stumbler 2 is here. Rewritten from scratch and featuring a re-engineered heuristics engine that detects up to 6 times as many tracking cookies as its predecessor and that processes cookies up to 40 times faster, Cookie Stumbler 2 still includes all the features that you love, but takes them all a step further to make the best even better.

Features
  • Time Saving - Cookie Stumbler 2 quickly analyses your Mac's cookies and lets you know how many tracking cookies it has found - a task that would have taken a lot of time when going through a large amount of cookies by yourself. Thanks to Cookie Stumbler's unmatched heuristics engine, you'll get a reliable, up-to-date tracking report within just a few moments, regardless of the number of cookies stored on your Mac.
  • Private Browsing - The all-new Private Browsing mode removes tracking cookies as you browse the web, while allowing useful cookies to be stored on your Mac. This feature requires no special plugins, no special extensions and works with all web browsers that Cookie Stumbler supports.
  • Smart Cleaning - Cookie Stumbler 2 introduces "Smart Cleaning". Rather than going through the tedious process of telling Cookie Stumbler your domain preferences one by one, Smart Cleaning allows you to achieve the same effect using a single rule. You choose the criteria and what to do with cookies that match it - Cookie Stumbler will handle the rest.
  • Centralized control over your cookies - Rather than having to manage each Web browsers' cookies separately, Cookie Stumbler 2 consolidates them into one convenient location. And thanks to Cookie Stumbler 2's brand new categorization and search tools, this kind of a task has become simpler than ever.
  • Compatible with major Web browsers - Cookie Stumbler 2 supports all major Web browsers out of the box, which include Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Chromium, Opera, iCab, Camino, Roccat, Adobe Flash Player, and Microsoft Silverlight. Support for additional Web browsers can be achieved using web browser plugins.
  • Maintains your Mac - Cookie Stumbler 2 features various maintenance programs, which ensure that your Web browsers use less hard drive space, are faster, more reliable and safer to use. You can run these programs anytime by yourself or as part of a regular cookie cleaning operation.
  • Keep track on tracking cookies - Advertising companies use cookies to track you. Time to return the favor. Cookie Stumbler 2 features an intuitive statistics system which will provide you with a clear overview of your recent cookie activity. And, using Cookie Stumbler 2's new mapping system, you can even track cookies back.

ABANDONWARE. My impression is that it was an interesting, if intermittent school project. Now it's abandoned.

-> Go get Cookie by SweetP Productions, which is excellent and frequently updated, highly recommended. Its developer is terrific.

Sounds like the end of WriteItStudio, their site is unreachable, and I can't even retrieve my serial number. I did really like the program before, especially its new Mac version. On my PC the design is awfull and it takes a lifetime to uncheck everything in order to remove a cookie. Talking about the Mac version, I have paid for 2years x2 but they did only validate 2 years!!! When I reported the problem, they told me the registration time is correct and that I misunderstood. Actually, I renewed twice using the same MacUpdate discount code when it was on sale on MacUpdate a few years ago.
I do really hope they won't stop their programs though... (I'd change my rating, if the cookie stumbler is not discontinued)... at least they could inform us about what they are planning to do like most of honest developper do!

I noticed that many polyvalent software like CleanMyMac offer a feature to remove cookies... that is probablu the reason why Cookie Stumbler has discontinued.... When we think of the annual registration fees, I feel like I have been cheated ! I don't know if CleanMyMac (also available as CleanMyPc) does recognize every cookies like this software, but as far as I know is that when I used the latter one, there were no cookies detected by Cookie Stumbler....

Cookie Stumbler works in annoying ways to me. After clicking on Sources CS analyses the cookies present on my system and also shows a tick box for each cookie to specify if you'd like to keep it as a favorite or not. But upon clicking clean cookies CS mysteriously ticks boxes that haven't been ticked, hence each time I end up with all kinds of cookies from dreadful companies that I definitely don't want to keep. I have to manually uncheck them and run CS again and again.

This totally defeats the purpose of having a cookie manager such as CS in the first place! I run 10.11.2 with Safari 9.0.2. I'm giving up on CS permanently, why annoy myself every time?

Terrible product and terrible support. This was a fine program until it was "upgraded" and simply doesn't work. No response from support when I was trying to purchase, no response after purchase. Stay AWAY from this terrible program. Don't buy it. Trust the reviewers below.

Nice progress. It's been great working with the developer, who's been very responsive. He's also integrated a new feature for keeping track of and keeping out new tracking cookies during browsing. Gradually, it's becoming easier to maintain privacy during web browsing, the way it should be.

DO NOT UPDATE to 2.4.2!!! Again a bad version of this software! I'm not going to offer a review rating again until the developer sorts himself and his program out so that it actually works properly again. Meanwhile, rather than post another rant or OMG list of continuing problems, I'm going to attempt to work directly with the developer. I'm going to make this effort specifically because I like this program... when it works. v2.4.2 is NOT working. I went backwards, yet again, to version 2.3.1, which does work. If you too have installed any of the recent updates and gotten nailed with the multitude of bugs: To go back to v2.3.1, you have to have its installer/program file, AND you have to go into the following location to delete Cookie Stumbler files. (Otherwise, when you attempt to run 2.3.1 it's going to crash crash crash): ~/Library/Application Support/Cookie Stumbler/ After you've trashed this, boot v2.3.1 and re-enter your password to re-register the application. It then works fine as ever.

Hello everyone! David from WriteIt! Studios here. I realize that support in recent months hasn't been the best for everybody, but there's a good reason for this. No, Cookie Stumbler is not discontinued. Nor have I given up on all customers. First of all, due to a rogue firewall rule, not all e-mails were coming through to support. There was no error message at my end, so I genuinely had no idea about this. This has now been resolved. At the same time I am also a university student, and currently I'm in the middle of final exams and assignments. This means that I have less time to work on Cookie Stumbler, but I have released two updates in the last two weeks while another team member is still actively releasing definition updates. My apologies for the inconvenience caused. If you're experiencing problems with Cookie Stumbler, please e-mail them in. I don't have your browser databases, so not all bugs you're experiencing can be reproduced on my Mac, nor on the other testing machines I have here. Thanks to Derekcurrie for keeping me up-to-date on MU here. Much appreciated. A new update will follow shortly.

v2.4.1 was kindly provided in a hurry. Thank you! EXCEPT: It's still doing a lot of the same old garbage: - I refresh the Sources list, a pile of tracking cookies show up. - I clear the tracking cookies, supposedly. - I refresh the Sources list. ALL the 'cleared' tracking cookies are BACK AGAIN. - I Quit Cookie Stumbler and reboot it again. ALL the same tracking cookies are still there in the list. - After a few repeated clear/refresh/clear/refresh cycles, Cookie Stumbler LOCKS UP for a few seconds, then BOMBS. IASSOTS. Once again I am back stepping to version 2.3.1, which at least doesn't bomb and appears to actually, for real, remove tracking cookies and stay that way. Seriously: What's going on? This is severely disappointing.

Stills cleans cookies, for me, after I updated to version 2.4.1 with am using a MacBook Pro with MacOS 10.10.3. HOWEVER, 1) after it cleans cookies it sometimes crashes (see below); 2) when it opens it warns me ("Attention: Your copy of Cookie Stumbler is out-of-date. Version 2.4 is available for download via the 'Check for Updates ...' menu.". ), but its Check for Updates and About windows both show that I already have version 2.4.1 (even after I quit and reopen it several times), 3) after getting "Sources" and cleaning them, I can immediately repeat this cycle (while still in Cookie Stumbler) and find more cookies (I did this four times in immediate succession). Crash reports were obtained and submitted to the Developer for the following cases: The first crash report happened after I ran Cookie Stumbler, cleaned out the 44 cookies it identified, then immediately ran it a second time without quitting it after running it. It then crashed while executing it's “Sources” search (i.e., before it found the cookies). After it crashed, I immediately re-opened it and ran it again - this time it found, and removed, 195 cookies. I am puzzled as to how it could find 195 cookies it wanted to remove only a few minutes after I ran it and it found only 44 cookies to remove. After it successfully ran the second time, it crashed again. I reopened it, ran it again, and it found (and I removed) an additional 163 cookies. A third crash report, from the day before (cause unknown), was also submitted to the developer.

I've always wanted to champion Cookie Stumbler as I value its concepts and goals. It could be great. But I consistently have to question the coding ability of its developer, because...

1) Version 2.4 was whacky as can be when I first ran it. First it warned me that my cookie definitions were out of date. OK, but what am I supposed to do about it? There is no user accessible update process.

2) Then I found that it was reporting a mass of cookies I'd never seen before. Ok, kewl! So I had it clean the cookies out. Then I had it refresh its Sources again, and ALL the cookies were listed again! This was consistent upon repetition! So, I rebooted the app. Happily, it told me my cookie definitions were now up to date. Great. But again, it kept finding cookies, I'd clean them, they'd be back again. After trying a few times to get the cleaning to stick, the app BOMBED. Flaky.

3) So I started it a third time! Same deal. Eventually it again BOMBED after I tried to get the cleaning to stick. Same with the fourth boot...

4) And I never have liked the annoying scheduling system. The scheduling in 'Cookie' is perfection.

I'm moving back a version of Cookie Stumbler until these new bugs are worked out. I'm also giving the alternative app, 'Cookie', an extra hug today for just working great all the time. That's the one to get. If Cookie Stumbler stabilizes again, I'll add the new version alongside it.

But hey! The map works again!

This program has always been unstable at best, but it's promised functionality was good enough for me to purchase a license, AND the upgrade, AND years of cookie definitions. I cannot recommend anyone buy and install this piece of software in its current state. Currently, it crashes on every launch. Every one. I've written the developer three times over the course of weeks with no response. None. Not, "I'm a solo developer and I'm having personal issues I must attend to." Not, "I've been overwhelmed with support requests. Thank you for being a loyal customer. I'll respond to your issue within (x) number of days." Nothing. I am at the point where I have to uninstall the program and give up.

To the folks with negative comments below , try it again . The new upgrade has fixed many issues . Cookiestumbler has been on my Mac for 2 years and I wont be without it . The customer service has always been top notch. If they have stopped replying , its because theyve answered your question. I have nothing but praise for this wonderful app . And no ... i dont work for them . I am a paying customer .
