Is there any more impressive open source project than Wine? I mean, yes, the Linux kernel itself and maybe GCC, but Wine just blows me away. The sheer audacity of sitting down and deciding to reimplement the entire Win32 stack including bugs to the point where DirectX is reimplemented in OpenGL and everything runs natively is just unbelievable. It's truly a testament to open source. No business would initially fund a project like this, it's nuts. And yet it exists, and continues to improve, and now companies like Codeweavers are built upon it. Congrats!

Well what can I say…

I have one Windows app I really need for my work – it is about 10 years old and doesn't require lots of computer power… The complete installation is 7MB.

Because of this app I have paid a lot of money for all kinds of emulators over the years - but even with Parallels and Fusion it wasn't really comfortable and quick to use – also it had a huge footprint; about 4GB of Windows for a 7MB app…

I had an eye on Wine/Wineskin for about 5 years. I've bought/donated for CrossOver 3 years ago, but it wasn't quite there, too many crashes with my Windows-app. Every now and then I checked the new versions of Wine/Wineskin…

And now it works. It just works. No crashes, it just works flawlessly…

I am so grateful to the Wine-development-comunity and I will donate as much as I paid for that damn Parallels… Really, thanks to the developers, thank you so much!

I have no connection with this project but I am sure the developer's would truly appreciate it if you sent this message via email to ensure that it is received. Your experience is exactly the reason many dedicate countless hours to projects such as this one.

Nice post, I think the only people not in approval of your experience are vmware, parallels, and crossover. Free is many times the best thanks to dedicated developer's like those affiliated with the Wineskin Winery. +1

@Fishscale: " I think the only people not in approval of your experience are vmware, parallels, and crossover. Free is many times the best thanks to dedicated developer's"

Not to put too fine a point on it: CrossOver is funding the development of WINE (they employ Alexandre Julliard and other members of the WNE team). There is no free lunch - if no one pays, the developer goes bankrupt and the software remains amateur crap. WINE has become so great because of the dedication of developers AND people who are willing to pay even though they could get a free version (I purchased CO).
Free is *never* the best, and can't ever be - it's only short-term convenient for the customer. That's because if you work for free, you don't make money, don't put bread on the table, nor feed your kids. Free is by definition amateur stuff. CodeWeavers (the CrossOver guys) did the courageous step and elevate WINE to a sustainable, professional level, making it a viable tool for everyone, business included.

To give credit where credit is due: WWinery is a great tool, and hats off to the devs for making it free. Just remember that this would not be possible without a for-profit company that foots the (rather large) bill for WINE.

Hi Twickline,
Does that "We" includes Doh123 (the developer of the original Wineskin & W. Winery) or only includes a 3rd party company who forked this open-source* project?

And does "good way to support this project" includes Doh123's Wineskin or includes only Bordeaux's Wineskin Pro?

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming anyone for anything, I just found your comment a bit confusing. You see, the way you are saying things seems that Doh123 (therefore Wineskin Winery) is part of Bordeaux Group, if this is the case then is cool, but if is not the case then is not so cool. In any case, people should be certain that their money and feelings are indeed supporting the project they want to support.

Best wishes.

*Disclaimer: It is open-source software so everyone can do what they want with it as long as they respect the license; in this case Bordeaux Group modified Doh's code and added some stuff, stuff which some people may find useful, some others don't. As they modified the code into something a bit or a lot different (i don't know B.G.'s Wineskin Pro) they have the right to charge for they work.

Wow... All those games I thought I would never play again... Thanks for making this free. This app is perfect for anyone who has a few programs to run but doesn't want to mess around with bootcamp. The software might seem complicated to use at first, but it's rather simple when you get down to it, and there is a devoted online community in case you run into some issues.

Definitely worth five stars. Check out Wine Bottler as well.
