I have the Logitech Z-2300 THX-Certified 2.1 and although boom increases the base at low volumes there is a fair amount of distortion. The speakers I have can provide much better quality sound without distortion simply by turning up the volume and increasing the base.

Confusion solved: v1.8.1 is the current version of Boom. The only reason there is a v1.9 is to distinguish it from the non-Apple App Store version. The App Store has restrictions that require recoding of apps. Giving the App Store versions unique numbers is required in order to tell them apart. If anything, the App Store versions of apps are LESS capable than direct-from-the-developer versions.

IOW: v1.9 adds nothing new compared to v1.8.1. Annoying, isn't it.

Thanks for clearing that up buddy :-) I was wondering what the heck was going on. At first I thought this app was becoming an App Store only app, which would have been dreadful!

Hi Derekcurrie,

We have released Boom v1.9 in Mac App Store only and we will be pushing the update for website version in around 7-10 business days.

We have not updated the listing in MacUpdate, it has fetched data from Mac App Store.

But that's opposite of what I usually experience. I get tired of the Apple App Store because it takes a couple weeks for what developers release publicly to catch up on the App Store due to Apple's vetting process. So, Huh?

Anyway, thank you GlobalDelight for the clarification!

Since I play videos during classes, I find Boom to be indispensable for pushing the volume up so that students can hear it. If it wasn't for Boom I couldn't show a lot of the videos I do, the unassisted volume produced by my Retina MBP just isn't loud enough.

!.8, 1.8.1 just doesn't install, so what good is it? I'm running 10.9.2 and what I get is "Installation Failed due to an internal error. Please click on Install to retry." Like that worked! Then, when I click the Okay button, I get "Incomplete Installation: Missing some parts. Bad landing. Please reinstall." Just what the hell is "Bad landing"? If it's missing parts, that means the .DMG file is bad.

Worthless experience!

I'm downloading it and installing it, with repeated testing, just fine on 10.9.2. Therefore, huh?

- Re-download it. Corrupt downloads are sadly more common this past year. It may be your ISP.
- If you still have trouble, contact Boom's support folks. I found them helpful.

There are only a hand full of apps that I consider to be a must have, cannot live without app and Boom is one of them. When watching HD movies on my Mac the volume limitations makes it difficult to enjoy the movie unless you put in your earphones. Boom solves this problem with much louder quality audio. I'm glad to know the issues I was having with VLC player and Boom have been fixed.

I have only tested this in demo mode, so there's that. I did not experience any of the technical difficulties of others, though I also reinstalled OSX 10.6.8 after the invasive fiasco that was 10.8.

Overall, it has a nice balance between function and option. Enough choices for basic tuning but not so much as to put off the non-audiophile. However, it has an annoying glitch.

Any video I play in any application (VLC, Plex, DoubleTwist, Chromium, etc.) has a visible lag in audio. Sound is always slightly out of sync when playing a video. Enough to be annoying the longer I am watching something. That is no longer acceptable, though obviously this would not be noticeable with playing just an audio file.

I am not sure this can be solved for all machines, so it is strongly suggested that this application truly needs a simple preferences interface to select or designate which types of files Boom is to boost... and which it should leave alone. Until then, I will go back to using "Hear," though it is overkill for anything but music.

We have released the latest version of Boom a while ago, could you please update your copy of Boom to the latest version and check if it helps.
To be safe, could you please uninstall Boom within the app via Settings->Preferences->Uninstall and reinstall a fresh copy via our website.
As per VLC related issues, we have discussed the issue with VLC developers and the issue has been fixed. Please update your copy of VLC to the latest version and check if it helps.

Still no joy. Lag time was visible even with the new verions. Did a complete uninstall and double checked for orphaned files as well. Sorry, but Boom is not going to cut it on my little mac mini use for a media center. Back to using Hear.

Okay, so call me cheap. But I already purchased Boom 1.7 this year & I don't want to buy again.

I tried earlier versions of Boom with 10.6 and 10.7. Never could get it to work.

Tried Boom 1.7 with 10.9 and all it did was TURN OFF my sound, forcing me to uninstall.

Is ONLY Boom 1.8 compatible with 10.9?

O am I missing something???

Boom is compatible with Intel, OS X 10.5.8 or later.
If you have already purchased Boom, you do not have to pay for the app again. You always have an option to reinstall Boom via the purchase point.
Could you please uninstall Boom within the app and reinstall a fresh copy and check if it helps.

Pretty damn annoying that one needs to purchase a code for EVERY USER on a single machine.

We're stuck using one user account to listen to music because, right now, we don't think we should have to buy another one so my wife can use it. We share the mentality that software goes w/the machine, not the user necessarily.

Coincidentally, almost every other developer agrees with us. I wouldn't have a problem paying 2x as much for this if I knew it was going to behave like this.

Purchase Boom at the Mac App Store. The App Store rules allow you to install Boom on every Mac you have, for every user you have.

This is why I buy apps at the Mac App Store. No need for serial codes. Automatic updates, etc.

Same problem here. Started a long time ago and no update installed successfully since.

Actually I don’t recall *any* update ever working after the first installation (1.3). No way to revert to the older version either. It’s just broken.

If it hadn’t been part of a bundle, I’d have asked for a refund.

@ GlobalDelight-SupportTeam:
>Please make sure that you do not have multiple Boom copies in your system. Also please make sure that you uninstall Boom completely

And how are we supposed to do that? The app’s “installer“ (which is the app itself) gives no such choice and since it isn’t standard, it won’t list what it installs.

If just installing your software after it breaks itself requires individual assistance from you, you’re obviously doing something wrong.

I wasted quite a bit of time trying to revert to a clean state and gave up.

For anyone interested, digging in the app’s resources shows installation scripts that apparently put those on your system:
/System/Library/Extensions/BoomDevice.kext
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/VolumeBooster.component
~/Library/Logs/Boom.log

A - No such file is left on my system and it still won’t install.
B - 3rd party developers are not supposed to modify /System/Library/
That’s what /Library/ is for.
