Can FireRecord enable me to download stuff from my Time Warner DVR to a format I can save or burn to DVD? Do I need a special video card, TV tuner or some other tech?

I'm a professor, and I record zillions of documentaries that I'd love to use in the classroom, but the only way I've ever been able to get them out of my DVR is by connecting it to my VCR and recording it on videotape — but my school is trashing all their VCRs this year, and the quality stunk anyway. So, can I use FireRecord for this purpose?
