every time we test jitsi with 2MBPs we get echos and an infinite audio loop. it escalates very fast to a howling noise. again with the new version. jitsi is unuseable. any idea to fix this? i want to delete skype!

Get a headphone with mic or headphone and use the internal mic. Problem solved.

thanks for your reply LouisBelle,

a headphone is a solution but not optimal.
msnsa skype is able to do it without echo and infinite audio loop.
i'll test v2.8 for improvements.

I'm sure jitsi team will be more than happy to receive your code patches for improved audio handling. otherwise you might want to consider raising incentive to improve this by throwing in some cash via freedomsponsors.org. The thing with opensource software is, that someone needs to develop the code. And if you don't have the NSA backing you up with tax money or microsoft, which we know works closely with the NSA, this isn't as easy.

But yes, skype noise cancellation works great. It just comes at a price and that is your freedom.

It sounds like you are trying to test it in the same room which is not a real world use — of course you are going to get feedback if the mics are pointed at the speakers.
If not, and you are getting feedback with just 1 machine in the room you can lower your Input Gain and if you can control the mic/speaker placement, change it so the mic isn't pointed at the speaker — in fact you could test it in the same room with a sound barrier of some sort. If you are using the internal mic, then get external directional mic and you can set it up properly.

Feedback cancellation is a feature not everything has, and if you are using it to make a call within the same room, this might not even be cancelable. You could request that feature, but if you are asking for 2 machines in the same room to work without feedback, don’t be surprised if you get a less than respectful reply because it would be a silly request.

Jitsi 2.6 has been released: https://jitsi.org/Main/Download#stableline Now IRC is supported again. Great news! And ZRTP encryption for voice calls. Time to uninstall skype.

Jitsi is great - it offers encrypted chat and encrypted audio chat. But the current stable and latest nightly both require Java 1.6 installed. So while offering security features, requiring such an old Java version and not working with the latest Java 1.8 basically ruins security. I'm not sure what the thought process behind this is, devs talk about priorities. But then again if this isn't a high priority, I do not know, what is. So one star for the current weak security situation with the very old Java 1.6 version. Back to 5 stars when that is resolved.

Try the latest nightly and see if that works for you. I love comments like yours. If you experience issues and really want to get them solved, procedure for jitsi is: mail the devel mailing list and create a bug if asked to.

Does this work with Google Voice via the Internet, or do I have to sign up with a separate SIP provider?

I really want to like Jitsi, but phoning home/auto updating without even asking is really creepy and totally not okay. It's sad that this stuff now creeps into open source software, too.

J-M- please elaborate. How is Jitsi phoning home? Auto-update? I've not noticed that so far. Maybe you can explain some more so we can learn and try to understand if our point is valid. Thx :)

We need Jitsi for iOS now! ;) Not much ZRTP support on iOS, none that are completely free, anyhow -- the two free ones require a paid proprietary PBX subscription...

There is an Android version though. Ugh! Apple needs to get with the times to allow innovation on iOS!: "Is there an iPhone/iPad version of Jitsi? No. Due to the restrictions imposed by the platform it is highly unlikely this answer is going to change." https://jitsi.org/Documentation/FAQ#ios

I want to like this app, but on a Mac Pro tower you cannot change the audio output setting. It defaults to 'Digital Output' and attempts to change it do nothing.

I know. But often don't have the time to enter all the details. You can do that if you want, whenever you stumble upon a comment, naming a new version. It's just to let the MU-team know, that a new version exists.

Maybe MU staff could delete "new version" comment clutter after updating listings?

Hm, they don't bother me. There are far more worse comments that I'd truly consider clutter. I'm glad if users inform MU of new versions. Being up-to-date is the whole point of this site so those are rather important infos. But I also don't mind the hint being deleted once the listing is updated. I just don't see them as negative.
