Factotum is a "search assistant" for Safari. It opens a small window next to your active Safari window and loads a search page in it. So far, that's nothing you couldn't do by yourself. The unique feature of Factotum is that when you click an offsite link in the little search window, the link opens in your main window-not the search window.

To open Factotum's window, just click the Factotum button on Safari's toolbar or type its configurable hotkey (Cmd-Shift-F by default). If you select some text in the current window first, Factotum will immediately perform a search on that
What's New
Version 1.0.6:
  • Added toggle button to determine whether Factotum's window stays in front on link click.
  • Added support for saving the window position and size.
Requirements
  • Intel/PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later
  • Safari 5.0.1

In case anyone is wondering, the actual size of the download is 66 kb, NOT 92.4 Mb.

Also the developer has a number of other Safari extensions, some of which look quite useful, such as "QuickNuke" which is akin to FF's "NukeEverything". WIth it you can delete html elements you don't want to see, which is particularly handy when printing pages.

This extension required that the "Block Pop-Up Windows" function in Safari be turned OFF. If you like pop-up windows, give it a shot. It seems to me that there should be a better way to accomplish the task than turning off something that so many people use 24-7. But I'll make this a comment and leave the rating to others.

Thanks for noticing the problem and alerting me to it. I've released an update to Factotum (1.0.1) that adds an alternative method of opening the window. It's not as nice as the original method, but it works even when popup blocking is enabled. I hope you'll check it out. (The download link is unchanged.)
