YouTube must have changed something. I've tried 2 other downloaders and I can't download anything more than 720p.

YouTube no longer supports 1080p and 480p on Safari for HTML5 until Safari starts to support Media Source Extensions.

Essential Safari plugin. Stopped working lately. As @sjk below writes you can get it to work again by adding:
http://s.ytimg.com/yts/jsbin/www_watch_mod-*.js
https://s.ytimg.com/yts/jsbin/www_watch_mod-*.js
to Adblock's preferences. Just click on the Adblock icon and go to options. You should see something like this http://bit.ly/12pQZxW . It works after that. The other thing is run Chrome which comes with flash sandboxed. Never install Flash on your Mac. It's not secure, and it's not needed.

Ok. You don't need this fix anymore. They've made some changes and brought the html5 player back. I've re-signed up for html5 http://www.youtube.com/html5 and removed the lines from the adblocker listed above and now it seems to be giving the new player with speed controls in html5.

Maybe it's just me, but as of today, it seems like YouTube has found a way to force its HTML5 player even though I'm not signed up for HTML5 beta. It takes a second to kick in, so if I'm fast on the trigger, I can still download, but it's annoying all the same.

Also, I've never been able to watch Facebook videos with this - it still asks me to install Flash.

The main issue here is YouTube now trying to enforce Flash Player installation (which I refuse to do) for playback of many videos that HTML5 can handle. Adding these AdBlock filters is the best workaround I've found that also allows the YT5 extension to continue working:

http://s.ytimg.com/yts/jsbin/www_watch_mod-*.js
https://s.ytimg.com/yts/jsbin/www_watch_mod-*.js

I also leave YT's HTML5 beta disabled.

If this thing could have done this for all flash videos it would have replaced flash player altogether on the mac. Really nice piece of software does not speed up my fans, has a nice playback UI, easy to use, does not kill my battery life flash does and has a download feature. Thanks too the developer for making this app.

+++++ 10 % CPU with Safari + Youtube5 on Core i5 2,4 GHz watching Youtube-Videos +++++
(>50 % with Adobe Flash ...)

more 'plus':

+ nice Player UI
+ preferences for Video-Quality
+ 'no autoplay' pref for Youtube

- struggling with 40 min. Video in 1080p, maybe a Cache thing
in Safari ^^ (cause MacTubes does it)

5 stars !

Excellent extension, no more ads.

Works really great on my i7 920 hackintosh but stutters and doesn't load properly on my 2011 i7 15" MacBook Pro. Both computers running the latest safari and lion.

Works very well for me (PowerMac G5/DualCore2.5GHz; eg. a broken QuadCore).
No chopping video; plays smoothly even while loading.
I don't know which is best; FlashToHTML5 or YouTube5, but they both seem to work for me with YouTube.

Mrhooks had trouble on 28 Dec 2011
With autoplay turned on, when I try to view a YouTube video, there seems to be a duplicate of the video playing in the background where I can't see the player and stop it. The background video always starts playing first, so I can't watch the video in the foreground without hearing the audio twice - once early, once with the foreground video.

Safari 5.1.2, Lion 10.7.2.
