DockView overview

DockView extends OS X’s Dock and shows window previews whenever you hover your mouse over an application or while using Cmd+Tab. It helps you visualise the windows you currently have open and easily find the window you are looking for.

Features:

  • Activate windows. Click anywhere on a preview to activate the window.
  • Close windows. You can use DockView to easily close windows.
  • Live previews. The previews refresh constantly so you can keep an eye on windows without activating them.
  • Dock Badges. DockView can show dock badges with the number of windows open.
  • Customizable. The previews can be any size you want.
  • No hacks. DockView doesn't modify the Dock or any system file.

DockView is free to download and try, but the full application is available using an in-app purchase.

Its quite unfortunate that such a wonderful app has been abandoned by the developer. DockView has been discontinued due to low demand!

What is up with people who use stars in negative *comments* instead of only in reviews? "The app works like a charm and I would give it five stars, but the developer has pissed me off and hurt my feelings. So, I'm only going to give his app a half-star to punish him!" Reviews and stars are meant to be about the apps. If you have some pet peeve or personal bitch with the dev, then put that mess into a *comment*. You know. Like what I'm doing here. That's why MU has set its pages up the way that it has. It's really easy to make the distinction.

I'm having difficulty finding out just what exactly is the difference between the free and paid versions. Yes, I know I could download it to find out, but I don't like doing that with App Store apps because of the way the App Store works. So, is the free version a demo (time or usage-limited)? Or is it feature-limited compared to the full version? If so, what features are in the free version, and which ones do you have to pay for? If it is a demo, MU should change this listing to reflect that.

Thanks for fixing the Mavericks issues. I had to stop using this for a while. I was using HyperDock but I find it inferior to DockView.

I too loved DockView 1 and so I purchased V2 to support the developer only to find out it doesn't work with Bartender installed. After I paid for the app and installed it, I just got a notification that it simply doesn't work when running Bartender and I have to quit it. Would be great if I would have found this info BEFORE I purchased and installed the app! So, I have quitted Bartender and guess what: even then DockView hangs. Seems I have just purchased an app that simply doesn't work. I know, the dev already knows about the problem and is working on it but this is not the point here. If the app will be fixed in a short time I will of course adjust my rating as this rating is not about the app itself - as I can't run it - but the above lack of communication.

Yet another app gone the way of the Mac App Store! Long time user of DockView, but now no more. Version 1.x does not work with Mavericks, so the only way to go if I still want this functionality is to purchase Version 2 through the MAS, something I refuse to do! So long. Too bad, as it is a good app otherwise. Five stars altogether, minus 4 for their sales policy vis a vis loyal customers.

Is anyone else not able to get DockView working on Mavericks? It just crashes on launch. Yes, I went into System Preferences->Accessibility and granted access to DockView.

I am still trying the demo of DockView, and I will probably purchase it based on my limited experience with this GUI enhancement. The main reason is that I use command-tab all the time, but in stock OS X, if a window is minimized it does not come up when I switch to the app, even if there is only one window. I can understand the programmer’s logical behind this: you might not always want a window that is minimized to pop-up, but in practical use, an option to switch to a window would be nice. With DockView, I can hit command-1 (or cmd-2, cmd-3, etc.) and open/undock the first window or any other window minimized. This means it is just a fraction faster than the stock OS, and for those of you familiar with me, I strive to maximize efficiency: every click counts. DockView accomplishes this and rids me of the regular irritation of switching to an app via keyboard shortcut and then realizing it is minimized and then having to click on the dock icon. I realize there are gestures but this fits my workflow that much better, and for that it reason alone it is worth the $8. Bottom Line: Recommended. (Try out the demo first to see if it increases your efficiency.)

The pictures on MacUpdate need to be updated as the latest version doesn't look the same, the window spacing is huge by comparison and the window label is now above the dock icon.

This new version of DockView is outstanding. The previous version was nowhere near as good. I just replaced HyperDock with this. I find DockView's previews more visually pleasing but that is subjective. Your milage may vary. So far this is running great, no complaints. Will... maybe there is just one... This needs to be labeled trialware and not "Free" so as not to appear to mislead people.

There appears to be a memory-related problem with this version. Using activity monitor, I see that DockView is using 300% of the CPU. I'm using a 2011 MacBookAir with a 60GB internal drive and 2GB RAM. (It was an inexpensive closeout). Within minutes of rebooting with DockView enabled, I get system-generated warnings that my machine has no available application memory, and everything slows to a crawl. I do not have Bartender installed.

Someone else said: >never really reliable or productive... On the contrary, I've found DockView to be indispensable especially when you work with Spaces. It saves me time that really adds up. I can quickly peek in on things in other Spaces without leaving the space I'm in and without even having to click anything. I can quickly peek in on hidden windows by hovering over a Dock icon without having to unhide and re-hide them and/or move to their Space at all. If I'm downloading an update to Linux with Transmission in a secondary Space, I can just simply hover over it in the Dock and watch its live progress briefly with a click (just hovering). If I want to check to see what email came in, I can simply hover over the Mail icon in the Dock and have the window pop up from another Space to see if it's worth addressing. I keep iChat in another space and can hover over it's icon as well. I use it constantly with Spaces and I wouldn't update to another OS without it. The only issue I've ever had with Dockview is that a bunch of console errors will come up if I'm running SnapzPro, but I think that might be the fault of Snapz, not sure. My experience has been with 1.5.x and using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I haven't yet tested it with Mountain Lion. Is there differences in options and performance between using it in those different setups? Or does Dockview 2.x in Mountain Lion work just the same as Dockview 1.5.x in Snow Leopard?

Hyperdock is much better now. Shows window previews all the time. DockView requires all your windows to be opened after it starts-A real pain!!! The old version of DockView was much better,

I for one will not update to 2.1. Less customization, don't see the resource optimizations either (seems to use more memory than previous version, which may decrease with use but still). Never liked this fremium-type pricing. Previous version just works fine and seems to be a lot better. This developer may have shot himself in the foot with this update.

The number one "new feature" is bug fixes and decreased CPU utilization - and yet existing users have to pay 100% of full price? Are you serious?

I really wish someone would offer the option of showing Safari's tabs as thumbnails in the Dock like you can do with Windows 7 and IE. Whomever offers this I'll switch to it (HyperDock, etc.).

There's some sort of conflict with Snapz and DockView. Whenever I hover over a Dock icon and then over the DockView preview image, hundreds of these messages get written to the Console: [0x0-0x11011].com.ambrosiasw.snapz[237] Fri Dec 9 03:25:14 MacBook-Pro-4.local Snapz Pro X[237] : kCGErrorInvalidOperation: _CGSFindSharedWindow: WID 28 This is with latest DockView 1.55 and Latest Snapz Pro X 2.3.2 on Mac OS 10.6.8 with all current updates.
