FontLab overview

With FontLab (was FontLab Studio), you can create, open, modify, draw, space, kern, hint, and export desktop, web, color, and variable fonts. It is an all-around font editor, but also supports data interchange with other font creation tools, making it easy to integrate into your existing workflows. FontLab brought in the best of their classic apps, FontLab Studio and Fontographer, including many familiar keyboard FontLab shortcuts. But they reconsidered and streamlined every function.

FontLab VI also gives you groundbreaking new drawing tools and responsive contour operations to make your design process easier and more efficient, whether you’re an expert or a beginner. FontLab now supports color and variability, so you can explore these new possibilities and expand your creative reach.

Fantastic software! I'm a total amateur and, nevertheless, was able to make my own font, just for fun, of my own handwriting (writing on paper, taking a picture, converting it into SVG shapes, pasting them into Fontlab and making adjustments). Fontlab is quite complex for an amateur, you won't need most of the things it has, but, again, it's possible to have fun with it.

Got excited all for nothing. Hoping it was an update to fix some annoying bugs and maybe become a silicon app. But no, 8.0.1 come out in August 2022.

This application is top-notch: supports many font formats for import and export, the edit/drawing tools are refined and easy to use, and the developers are very responsive. Add to that a generous upgrade path, and FontLab VI is one of my favorite applications of all time.

Having had the chance to actually use the software fairly extensively, I can actually rate it at last. Fontlab Studio's complexity and breadth are amazing. The UI could definitely be made easier to use and in some cases is quite bewildering. It's loaded with redundancies in ways of doing the same thing and customization, though I hesitate to call that bad (if they all worked properly). However, under 10.6.8 on my Mac Pro at least, it is absolutely riddled with peculiar behaviors and bugs which have to be negotiated like a minefield. There are also too many circumstances when instead of reporting an error of some kind, it simply crashes. More than about 3 seconds of the pinwheel and I know it's going bye-bye. Fortunately the app starts up quickly and saves rapidly, as well as saving a backup and having an autosave. The manual has a horrendous amount of material to cover and doesn't do it in a very comprehensible way. So, high marks for features and capabilities, but so-so to lousy everywhere else. It would certainly be nice if Fontlab could provide a timetable for the release of version 6 which would narrow it down to a particular year, at least. I'd like to know if I'll still be young enough to use it so I know whether to start saving now.

Workspaces malfunction. Tools and Paint keep disappearing so I have to keep clicking on my workspace or picking them in the menu to get them back. If I click the green window maximizer in OS X, then the windows subsequently act as if there is a second toolbar at the top whether there is or not, so no windows can be moved up. Toolbars can be added but only in the third and lower position. Open windows are forced down. Restarting the application does not correct the problem. Only resetting the app to factory workspace setting restores function. OS 10.6.8

It's about time! :D Ever since I moved to Lion, this is one application I've had to keep on my old computer. Now I can move it over to my Early 2011 MacBook Pro and be done with the old computer...well, soon. ;) Four stars for being stable...but still too expensive. :( Don

Years overdue as a Universal app, but still the best font editor out there. I was surprised how well it worked under Rosetta, but now that Apple has deprecated PPC compatibility, FontLab has been forced to port to the Intel architecture. It seems like they did a fine job. Familiar look-and-feel, solid performance and so far crash-free. Hopefully their public beta period shook out the major bugs - I haven't ran into any this version. It's nice that they aren't charging their loyal customers for supporting Intel processors. I'd like to say I expected it, but lately haven't been getting that kind of joy from many of my publishers. Belated kudos to FontLab.

FontLab, *please* edit your software. Fontographer is not a replacement. You charge nearly $700 for a product that is not a universal binary. The price is bad, but the fact that you cannot be bothered to update your software to run on recent Macs natively shows a gross lack of concern for your customers, especially considering FontLab's widespread use in typeface design. This is industry standard software. This is like Adobe not updating Photoshop for five years, even when many people rely on it. Even Glyphs, which I consider overpriced as it is, is around $400 less than your offering, and it's Intel-compatible. FontLab is still, even after five years of Intel Macs, not a universal binary, and therefore cannot run on Apple's most recent OS. The website says that there will eventually be an Intel binary, but it hasn't materialised yet, even though it was purportedly to be released in "July 2011." It's September—where is it? Windows users don't have to deal with this, even though most typographers and font designers work on Macs. I'm not amused, especially since I preferred FontLab to other font editors.

Oh boy! Still not UB. Still not even updated. Still priced at an absolutely ridiculous $650 though approaching 3 years old and only runs under Rosetta?! Web site is like a ghost town. Hasn't changed notably in years and shows it's age more on every visit. I guess this can be declared DECEASED! (or these people have been smoking something hinky)

Is this EVER going to be a fully Leopard compatible universal binary application?! It was never worth the cost, but i'm certainly not paying that kind of money for something with no updates for 18 months during which a new OS version and processor have drastically altered the platform. I already had to purchase Fontographer more than once in the past as it kept changing hands. I'm wondering if Fontlab has more than one person coding this thing.
