Musicality overview

Note: According to the developer, Musicality is no longer being supported. Please see the developer's site for further details.

Musicality gives you AirPlay audio streaming for any website, built-in controls for over 15 of the most popular music services, keyboard shortcuts, media keys, background playback, an iOS remote control and more!

You can visit any website in Musicality, but the built-in controls and song notifications will only work with supported sites. Right now, that list includes 8tracks, Beats Music, Deezer, Google Play Music, Jango, Last.fm, MixCloud, Pandora, Rdio, Rhapsody, Seeburg 1000, Slacker Radio, Songza, SoundCloud, Spotify, and TuneIn Radio. I love the app so far. It is my go-to player. I have airplay speakers all around my house and garage so it is used daily. I like having a dedicated app like this instead of a webpage. The only real drawback I have is when players like tune in have a pop-up player for a station, never works

Give me CALM Radio, and I'll buy it. Then again, the CALM website works like it was programmed by a 2-year-old on acid, so this could be a bit of a challenge.

PROS: A very nice alternative to having a traditional browser open. Main interface is primarily based on the service's own designs making it easy to know where you're at. Fullscreen support. CONS: Not many. It was once available on the Swedish store but has since been removed for unknown reasons. About the only con I can think of is perhaps that ads still run within the app causing more cpu usage than you may like (on some services). VERDICT: I find this to be the best of the service orientated musics apps out there. While it's got a few quirks, they're really minor. App is well worth checking out.

Yes its basically a browser. But the fact that you can control this with Apple Shortcut keys is easily worth the few measly bux the dev is asking. Common people quit being cheap. Great little app. LEt you control multiple accounts at once. And you can control your tunes while your playing games full screen. Props to the dev, this is app is one of a kind. Currently the workaround to control pandora with the mac keys requires way to much modding. This is simple. My only comment is UI. Could be improved into something more transparent and simple. But honestly I dont spend too much time looking at it and just jam.

At first I was dismayed but found the features to be all I needed and nothing more. I could use the UI because I was familiar with each site. I like fluid but it can't scrobble and I have to mess with it too much. And I could never get PandoraJam to scrobble. I was considering purchasing it but then it did something weird to my Adobe Fireworks CS4 and I couldn't use it anymore while working. This was a deal breaker and a weird bug.

Ok, my initial judgement of this app is kind of conflicted. When I read the description, I really wanted to like it, and I still want to like it, but there's just not a lot to it. In summary, it's feels like a stripped down web browser dedicated to "surfing"only Pandora and Last.fm. You get practically the identical interface if you visit these sites in Firefox or Safari. A few extra bells and whistles are thrown in to add "convenience" but somewhere deep down I feel like they're just there to disguise the fact that's it really just a mini web browser. There are 3 advantages of using Musicality over your standard browser... 1. You can close the window and the music continues to play (ok, this is nice). 2. Global keyboard shortcuts (and Apple Remote integration) to control the music outside the application window. 3. Growl song notifications. That's pretty much it. Now here's where the conflict comes in. Are these 3 conveniences worth $15? Unfortunately I'm gritting my teeth and saying no. They have a launch special of $10, but I'm still hesitant at that price. I just don't see the value in paying double digits for this app. BUT, I do have the solution! :-) I hate suggesting copying the functionality of other program, but if they were to add the ability to record streams and stream wirelessly to my Airport Express (like *coughing* PandoraJam) I would pay $10 for this in a heartbeat! Maybe even $15! :-) There are also some issues to fix. Why is it that when I click on any action that doesn't involve playing music, it takes me OUT of musicality and into my default browser (which is Chrome at the moment). It shouldn't have to leave the app, particularly since it's a web browser itself, to update my profile, find a song or get HELP. If those buttons aren't integrated with app, then they're kind of pointless. Also, there's no indication that your Pandora music is being scrobbled to Last.fm. That should be a no-brainer. I'll continue to play with it some more to see if it grows on me, but I can't imagine this becoming a part of my software collection in it's current incarnation.
